Football has changed so much over the last few years with rotations, zones, presses, etc, that it's extraordinary to think that after three years no-one definatively knows whether Bailey can coach, or not. You may have a gut feel, you may point to competitive periods against top 4 sides, you may recount wins such as the Sydney game, or you may question his win/loss record, but in reality most supporters and noted commentators are none the wiser. There's no doubt that this is a pivotal year for Bailey.

Can he coach ? I don't know, but I certainly wouldn't lambast anybody for asking the question.

no matter what, Bailey has to perform well above previous years - otherwise it is chopped liver for the bloke.

Dont get me wrong mate, he def needs massive improvement or as Richskee mentioned their are others potentially available, but I won't be basing any opinions on practice match performances.

I still think it's worth extending his contract by a year. Please, let's not write the guy off after a handful of average pre season matches. But, there are 2 things he needs to prove this year, firstly a team implementing his gameplan consistently, and secondly, proving himself in the box on gameday! These 2 things will be his downfall if he were to get the sack at some stage, and to be honest, if we don't make the finals after 5 years with Bailey, he should walk away.

Finals must be a priority next year! I still feel we will struggle this year. Junior and Bruce will be a loss, and we need players like Gysberts, Tapscott, Blease, Strauss, Gawn, Watts, Scully, Trengove, Maric to play senior footy. All these guys have only played a handful of games together. It took Geelong at least 5-6 seasons of playing there eventual premeirship side together, to look like a contender. So going by this, we still have a long way to go.

I think this season we need to be realistic and our goal should be on continual development and game time for our kids. Half a step back isn't a disaster IMO. With an easy draw and a good run of injuries though, I still feel we should finish between 8-12. Next season the onus should be on finals. Then, at the end of next season, if no climb up the ladder is happening, Bailey should be replaced. We have 1 shot at it with this talented group of players, and It would kill me to see us waste it. Viney is there to help out Bailey, but I'm sure he is also there as a reminder to Bailey that if improvement isn't made, we have a ready to go coach waiting in the wings.

LOL @ this thread.

Direct response to losing against the BL in a NAB challenge match.

This sort of knee-jerk reaction is what bad clubs do.

Indeed. Everyone needs to let these ******ed threads fall to the bottom of the pile.

At what point in his fourth year as coach are you happy to have supporters and the wider footy community assess his record ?

No babbling, just name a round. :thumbsu:

Btw, don't assume I'm being critical of him, it's just that (unlike you) I have no issue with an on-going assessment of his merits, or otherwise.

Wrong, it's a response to a coach that's had 4 preseasons at the helm and still hasn't shown that he can implement a successful gameplan or motivate players.

Nobody really cares about the result of a NAB challenge match, but ffs, after 6 months of training you'd imagine that the team could play cohesive football. And trust me, we did want to win the game against Essendon, yet the opposition were more focussed, and the Bailey was outcoached by a 1 game novice.

Bailey is incompetent as a tactical coach and it's about time that the club starts putting the heat on him.

Except that this thread shows up a day after a loss to BL in a NAB challenge match.

You can play it off as if this was four years coming, but if we won yesterday this thread wouldn't exist.

At the end of Round 6 - when we should have a full list and we've made it through the first bye - we've got an easy run to start the year so we should expect some wins.

At this point we can assess how the top 22 perform under Bailey and what game plans are being implemented and their effectiveness.

You're probably right. I like it when coaches are put under the pump for bad coaching even when they win, but it's rare. And can you imagine the responses it would generate ? You'd be referred to as someone that could never be pleased.

I'm not fussed about the loss, but I am fussed about the side being poorly drilled when it comes to defending. You don't need talent to set-up properly.

I agree with you, I'd rather objectively look at our coaching every week rather than only bring it up after a loss that the fans didn't expect.

From the gameday thread I posted this:

Talking Tactics: We played with no forward line for 3 quarters - 0 players in our forward 50 - and when it was shown time and time again not to work there was no change made! Bails got the boys to play on to advantage at all costs and when they reached the centre of the ground there was literally NO ONE to kick too. This eneded up in turnovers and players being forced to bomb it to advantage or out of play. It was terrible.

Effort Shmeffort: One team walked out to play today. Two-thirds of the boys were slow and looked almost disinterested. Unfortunately, most of those players weren't in our top 22 and when they should've been grabbing the opportunity they sat back like passengers.

I was also disappointed with the effort and the tactics employed. I just want to discuss it on a case by case basis - not start bullshit threads about sacking the coach after a pre-season match.

edit: and the podcast was also alarming - I am cautiously optimistic that come round 1 we wont be falling to these things every week.

The way I see Baileys future if Melbourne finishes (depending on things like injuries):

1-4: A dream result for Melbourne. Will get very lucrative contract extension of 3 years.
5-6: Exceeded expectations. Will get a contract extension.
7-9: Met expectations. In a very safe place.
10-12: Below expectations. Expect him to coach next year. But if Melbourne doesn't make the finals in 2012 then he's gone.
13-17: A very poor result for what Melbournes list is capable of. A very good chance he won't coach next year.

Grimey as he liked to be called... Spot on the money methinks. :thumbsu:
