I like the guy, seems to have a good perspective on things, doesn't get fussed and gives his thoughts regardless of others/environment etc. I base this on previous interviews, and listening to his weekly SEN segment.

Plus, his profile can't do us any harm and coupled with his obvious experience, I'm two thumbs up.

Not sure about this - he's just been let go by another club and it probably would have happened a year ago had they done a proper review then. I know he's a good bloke, just not sure at all about this.

What's his role?
Football director.

And to the last question, you ask the Collingwood staff and players and they will tell you that getting rid of Balme is a mistake, Eddie McGuire thinks that a change will win them the premiership so it's unusual how it all works really, Geelong need leadership in the off field department and Balme will be the man to do it, he is a great calming influence with plenty of experience

good pick up i think ,plenty of experience. better than someone with no experience

Meh I'm not convinced - read the Caro profile in the Age (see here ) and he comes across as a nice bloke, a mate of everyone, so its no wonder the staff and players at Collingwood don't want to see him go. But we're not looking for someone who is going to be a friend, really we need someone who is going to be a bit ruthless, who can follow and understand every aspect of the football department and who isn't afraid to make the hard decisions on a broad level. The job should be extremely powerful and we need someone who we, the punters, can trust.

From the interviews I heard he came across as a McGuire/Malthouse yes man. Not convinced.

Agreed. I hope that was just him with the media and not how he is to the people he is overseeing. Hopefully he can put his knowledge to use and give his honest opinion when things aren't going right.

Last thing we need is someone telling bomber what he wants to hear all the time.

I would think the last thing we need is for someone to come out each week and bag the coach and administrators now that would fuel the rumours of descent no end.

You dont see my point. No one cares what he tells the media. Its what he says behind closed doors that will determine if he is good for the club.

Atleast he will take a share of the media speaking away from Bomber. Last year it seemed like the only people at the club that would talk to the media was bomber and Ling with chappy and Harls talking once or twice.
Atleast Balme will be able to deflect issues that bomber would have trouble with.

Fair enough, but i don't believe Bomber is one of those full-on ego people and that he'd be open to suggestion and help.

I think the Balme appointment should be a good one, but overall the proof will be in te Accountabbility Pudding.

Definitley, Malthouse was like a shutdoor with nothing being suggested going through to him until it was too late, I have high hopes that Bomber and Balme will make a great team

I'm somewhat more pleased that Garry Davidson is (finally) out.

Almost the proverbial two birds with the one stone.
