Stacks of good bars in the CBD. For a pub try The Carlton Club in Bourke St. Great rooftop garden, stuffed ostriche, that sort of thing. Same crew as the Windsor Castle and Yeltsa.

I remember this thread. We ended up going to Siglo. It was a lot of fun, and not nearly as pretentious as I was expecting (at least, it wasn't on the Thursday we were there).

The Emerald Peacock is a very nice place but it's a bit... I don't know. Fancy? I like a bit more of a relaxed environment for drinking. Somewhere I can order a tap beer and not feel gauche whilst surrounded by the Beautiful People.

i know what you mean..i liked the fanciness of it though. i guess it depends on who you are with and your expectations for the night, but i like the atmosphere there. pretentious, maybe some people. but if you keep with your company for the night i've found it to be pretty good.

The supper club, no debate about it.

There is a rooftop bar there as well, siglo.

TBH, st kilda is pretty crap, the best bars are in the cbd, there are loads.

First thing I thought about when I read the OP.

Was in Melbourne earlier this year. Siglo was great, though a bit cold at night. Supper Club is awesome if you don't smoke.

I also really liked the Prince of Wales in St. Kilda. But it was very laid back. Not enough wank for your purposes I think.

Anyone go to Lucky Coq? That place is dope.

I generally hit up ADSC at Roxanne Parlour for a club and most other places are bars like Geebung on a Sunday.

I want to check out Boutique because I've never been there, but I'm a Vans type of guy, plus the girls at ADSC are my type!

Anyone here go to Eve or CQ? I've been to Eve on Thursday nights called Switch which is basically a uni night but never on Saturday. Eve and CQ on Saturday's seem too pretentious and I guess you need to be in line with girls to get in right? Secret Garden in St. Kilda on a Sunday night is a similar dealio?

Absolutely hate CQ, too pretentious and the bouncers are w***ers when it comes to letting people in.

For decent weather, I rate Riverland, or Section 8 Container bar.. even the Vineyard in St Kilda is good if the weather is good.

Honestly, there is so much to choose from. Melbourne is great like that.

Lucky Coq's alright, gets a bit couchy and disjointed though.

Secret Garden in St Kilda is good, usually a gold mine.

Be nice to the CQ bouncers, pays off. Good to know I can be off my chops at 2am amd always have a back up place that will be packed.

As chaos said, it's a smorgus board and the crowd bounces around a bit, but the options are limitless. I usually like to start out at a place like the Carlton Club get tipsy and move to a place like CQ where I have to be off my nut to enjoy the music, but there's a big crowd, good ratio and everyone's having fun.

I enjoyed Sorry Grandma! and 1806.

Superb range of cocktails at the latter.

'Spensive though.
Man it's easy to 'lose' $300. For the sake of my bank account I make sure I'm well oiled before heading out these days, don't think I can substantiate $600 a week.

Is Switch just commercial house etc. or is it more hardcore dance type of place? Thinking of heading there next Thursday, worth it?

They play a lot of commercial music there. Thursday's are pretty much a uni night. It's pretty good but gets packed, especially on the dancefloor.

Anyone been to The Saint, Hotel Barkly or Baroq?

The Saint - It's dead now, was massive a few years ago but liquor licensing stopped them in their tracks (midget walking along the bar pouring drinks into peoples mouth, girls would get free drinks if they took their underwear off and stapled it to the wall behind the bar) and other venues have gone past them. Still a decent venue but just doesn't get the crowd anymore.

Hotel Barkly - I like the public bar on the ground level, cheap meals, hot backpacker staff. Upstairs (which is what i'm assuming you mean) is a "nice" venue, sundays are packed but it's basically Riva if you're 20-35 rather than 40+, w***er central. Girls are glamours but unless you're a footy player or drug dealer don't really bother. If you like Eve saturdays, Boutique fridays then it might be up your alley.

Baroq - Can't really say, only been there once or twice and i was off my guts. I do remember drinking champagne with Buddy Franklin at some point. I remember it being pretty flashy.
