I know someone who can kick goals for us, is tough, and is a good finals player, who can fill the hole left by getting rid of Paul Chapman.

It isn't one of our youngsters, though. It is the man known as......

JIMMY BARTEL!

I would like to see Bartel up forward a lot next year. He struggled in defence. But, up forward, he can replace the goals we lose by not having Chapman.

Bartel is a great mark for someone his size, and is one of the most reliable kicks. Moreover, he can kick one of the most important types of goals- the clutch goal.

Just look at Bartel's three goals in the 2011 GF. He kicked them under pressure, when they needed to be kicked.

I think Bartel should become a permanent "third forward", and stretch the opposition, as Hawkins and Vardy will get the attention, yet Bartel can get the clever ball and kick goals.

Good points.
So Jimmy on the forward line for about 6 weeks in 2014 would about replace the impact of Chappy in 2013. Any more from Jimmy would be a bonus. And he loves a goal.
Would take him away from defence which would be a stress relief for him, and us.

I hope for a really big improvement next year from Billy the kid and George.
Bartel could be a great fwd, but I see him as a bit of a utility Mr Fixit for a lot of the season.
Maybe our Hodge or Goddard.

Whatever we think of Bartel in the backline, he had a more than reasonable year, in terms of his B&F placing. I'd much rather him stay out of the backline, but I don't think it will happen.

Chapman provided a lot more than an aggregate of goals for Geelong each year. In fact, Motlop's total this year comfortably tops the best total Chapman had in his career, mainly because he was never a permanent forward. So, about 3.0-3.5 goals a game (Pods and Chapman) extra out of Smedts, Murdoch, Varcoe, Kersten, Stokes, Bartel, Burbury, Walker and hopefully Menzel (among others)? That's doable.

What's tougher to replace is his uncanny 'get Geelong out of the shit' ability and his 'put the team on his back and drag them over the line' ability. Like his last game for the club.

You're right. Might as well not even play Bartel anymore. There's no place in the side for Bartel when we have the mighty George Burbury ready to tear it up next year.
I didn't say anything of the sort. I said that Bartel is not a long term solution. If Geelong were all about stop gaps then Chap wouldn't have been let go. Think about it.

Sorry to disappoint you, but it wont happen.
As MC said we have smedts, burbery, kersten, shroeder, murdoch, motlop, stokes, Christensen, Varcoe and (doubtfully) Menzel to play the role of small forward. It's the entry level position for young players most of the time.
Who are the small defenders? Not many - Guthrie, Thurlow and Enright that's it!
And Josh Hunt is gone.
Bartel will stay down back weather we like it or not. We just have to suck up the fact he's a poor defender. At least he has experience
Corey played down back too and he's also gone.

Bartel should be up forward because that should be the only place he is able to keep his spot.

It's way more important to develop long-term backs compared to 4th or 5th string forwards who are mostly just apprentice mids anyway.

Yes yes yes.

B: Enright Lonergan Rivers
HB: Guthrie Taylor Mackie
C: Stokes Johnson Christensen
HF: Motlop Vardy (or Kersten) Menzel
F: Duncan Hawkins JIMMY BARTEL
Foll: McIntosh Kelly Selwood
Bench: Blicavs Caddy Murdoch Varcoe

I am trying to contain my excitement at the thought of a forward line containing:

a fit Hawkins,
an improving Vardy or Kersten,
Motlop repeating his great 2013 form
Menzel with two good knees
and Jimmy Bartel

and you can also throw in one of Johnson, Stokes, Christensen, Duncan, Kelly, Caddy, Murdoch or Varcoe.

None that played last year as far as I can see, who could step up and kick 4 like Chappy did against Power, I suppose a new face like Burbury, but I think replacement, "we're kidding ourselves".

The great thing about this is that we can rotate SJ, Caddy, Varcoe, Stokes, Bartel etc between midfiled and forward, so if one struggles in a spot, they could swap without much trouble.
