can go to the blues for their second pick (4) and Brad Fisher.
With Fev on the block, highly unlikely. Fisher isn't a bad player at all and will be looked towards for scoring options in the upcoming season.

Wouldn't happen. The pick would be up for grabs perhaps, but very little chance of securing Fisher.

I reckon number 8 is a bit high. Unless 8 plus Mark Coghlan
If you were to get the first pick and a player, you'd be offered Ray Hall or Krakouer perhaps.

There is no way we'd throw in a first rounder with Coughlan for a player who is of equal (or even inferior) value to the team (which is also debatable).

Why would the Blues offer pick 4 for Bartel when we could offer up say Davies or Sporn and our 2nd rounder. We dont need to offer up the real value of Bartel as we have pick 1 in PSD. If Bartel is after $$ and he is happy with what we offer then we will get him cheaply or free. :D

IMO he will stay with the Cats though :(

This thread really is a joke. pick 4 and Fisher for a slow midfielder. Sure he has good skills and is very hard at it but c'mon.

That is very true and a scenario which I didn't quite catch.

I think Bartel will stay at Geelong. I can't see why he'd want to leave besides money? With Kelly, Corey, Ling and Bartel its a good foursome, only missing someone with superior speed (which is why Tenaces development is important for the Cats).

The Cats need either a marking target up forward or a fast midfielder. Realistically, I'd target Daniel Kerr (6th in total contested posessions and 20th in total clearances) from the Eagles as he has pace and has skill - although I hear he is highly regarded there and would Bartel and the Eagles want each other?

I agree Bartel will probably stay, but if he did get to us, the worry I have and maybe some of your supporters also have is that he is arguing over his worth for the second time at the end of his contract. If this happens for every one of his future contract negotiations then what will a club have to pay him when he hits his peak? He is only 21 at this stage and by time he is 26 will he be asking in excess of 500k plus a yr? IMO that price bracket should only be given to truly elite midfielders and KPP.
Just a thought. what do others feel about this? :)

Well I go for the tigers, but Bartel is a player that interests me as he is obviously class and may be on the market.

You do make a good point about his history with him negotiating contracts.

Can any Geelong supporters shed some light on this?

I think last time he stalled on negotiations due to limited oppurtunities rather than salary issues. He'd been stuck in the VFL a lot of the year and was racking up 20-30 possies a game, yet wouldnt get picked.

That would frustrate anyone.

I'd say he has knowledge, to a degree, what other clubs would be willing to offer him.He is try to get his Geelong figure as favourable as possible , just as anyone would do.The crunch will come when a choice has to be made on how much he is willing to sacrifice to stay, because he would get a substantial amout more by moving, as most players would.
Sabstantial? Maybe $100,000 to $130,000.
One word of warning though, whats good for the goose... if we loose Bartel without reasonable re-embursment then just wait till Mr Deledio comes out of contract. We might not get him but boy will it cost you heap to keep him.

Thanks. I did vaguely remember people saying that whilst some of his peers were being nominated, he was left in the VFL - that makes sense and is understandable. He is a good player.

Yep. On the open market, players value increases.

And yeah, I am aware whats good for the goose is good for the gander :)

Although, I'm not sure that Richmond would target him. Without getting into who is better between Bartel/Coughlan/Tuck etc - we're after faster midfielders and quite frankly, Bartel would cost too much to trade for. Would I love him at Richmond? You bet. But considering Kane Johnson, Shane Tuck and Mark Coughlan aren't exactly pacey - I doubt we'll make a play for him. You never know though!

I had a theory about Bartel, probably a load of crap, but who knows...

Could it be that Geelong are the one's with the upper hand over Bartel. They could full well already know they will be paying him more, but are saying no to get him to prove his worth during the finals and the few weeks before - he has been playing pretty good lately. They may pay what he's asking for no matter what, but are just holding off so hopefully he'll step up yet another gear.
Don't know if I made any sense there, hopefully you get what I mean :)
