this is from an article about Kochie's days being numbered on Sunrise, and Basil being one of the replacements:

"Zempilas.......... He is also said to be a personal favourite of both network proprietor Kerry Stokes and chief executive officer Tim Worner."
This is where it's at.

Unfortunately, as bad as he is, he ain't going nowhere as long as Stokes is there. I didn't know about the Stokes/Channel 7 Perth 'mafia' thing until I heard it mentioned today on SEN.

This is from 2012:

Basil Zempilas rises on Kerry Stokes' endorsement

...Basil Zempilas was just another popular television sports presenter....but not really thought of as anything particularly special.

And then it all changed. In front of a huge Telethon viewing audience, the billionaire owner of Channel 7, Kerry Stokes, declared Zempilas was "the most important person on Seven".

Not only did Stokes, not known for mincing his words, make the declaration live on air, but he did it in front of two of the station's superstars - Susannah Carr and Rick Ardon.

The pair are ratings royalty at Seven, presiding over Australia's most dominant news bulletin.

Their stony reactions, and the look of embarrassed shock on Zempilas's face, said it all.

It was surprise praise for Zempilas, hot on the heels of a ratings flop for his breakfast radio program on 92.9, which he co-hosts. The show slumped to the sixth most-listened-to station in Perth.

So, in an industry where ego is almost everything, singling out the highly regarded but not overly rated 41-year-old in such a public forum was bound to cause network rumblings.

"That quote from Stokesy raised a few eyebrows," one Seven insider said. Another said it would have hurt Carr and Ardon, who have spent a combined 60-plus years there as anchor newsreaders.

But Seven managing director Mario D'Orazio yesterday backed the assessment, describing Zempilas as possibly the "most valuable talent in our industry".

"Basil's a huge talent and we're very, very proud of his success as a news presenter, sports commentator and Telethon host," he said.

"His unique sense of humour and his all-round skills make him one of the most valuable, if not the most valuable, talents in our industry."

Zempilas had his first big break at Seven in 1992, when he was still a budding WAFL player for West Perth. After realising it wasn't going to be possible to do both well, he retired from football and dedicated himself to journalism.

His affable nature and easygoing on-air style saw him quickly rise through the ranks from cadet sports reporter to sports anchor and now AFL commentator. Zempilas's dream had always been to commentate nationally for AFL games and this year he realised that goal.

"I read a quote the other day that said to be an overnight sensation all you need is 20 years," Zempilas said.

"In some ways I really feel that probably applies to my career - many times success in TV and the media, all of it is just about turning up and putting yourself in the position to make the most of it. You make your own luck to a degree in our career but also you need to be prepared to make the most of the opportunities when that lucky break comes along."

Zempilas said he owed a lot of his success to football commentator Dennis Cometti.

"I think I was so lucky as a young person to be working at a TV station where Dennis worked," he said.

But Zempilas said he also holds co-anchors Ardon and Carr in high regard.

I came here to lament Basil's Olympic failure and hope that it brings more scrutiny to his overall performance.

Instead I find an article where he is anointed by a media baron.

I sad.

As I have said before, it is all industry push. There is no viewer demand for Basil's services.

If he hasn’t been rebuked prior to the olympics he ain’t going to be now

Does viewer demand ever get listened to?

Look at Julia Morris, I can't recall one person ever say she is funny and they love her presenting style but she keeps getting gigs. Luke Darcy the same and there is a whole host more.

Baz is basically like a school prefect chosen by the teachers who don't seem to get that all the students hate him.

Did not read the op, only the thread title, but certainly agree
Best 2 going around atm are Hudson & Jason Bennett, by a long way

Bazs go to topic during the aerials was a countdown of how many others needed to * up the landing for the aussie advance to the next round/make the final/get a medal
