Just saw on Steele's blog that Dayne Beams won a goal-kicking contest during training. It may mean nothing, or it could mean he is as good a kick as Didak, Thomas, Medhurst, Leon and Jack. Could it? Thoughts?

Didak's footskills have slipped due to playing as a midfielder. Has to run far more, as a result he becomes tired, and his skills naturally drop due to fatigue.

It's also far harder to hit a target from the midfield, after deciding who to hit, than it is in the forward 50.

He's an effective midfielder, but at his best he's played around the forward 50.

Good to hear. He's always looked very clean with his disposal, but a lot of that's due to his good decision making.

He was confident enough in his kicking to take a few set shots from around 50-55m last season, I remember one or two not making the distance but the rest were good.

He actually seemed to get quite a few set shots on goal last year.

Beamer is a straight kick at goal even though he fell short with a few they were still on target. I feel confident he'll kick a goal when he has a shot at goal.can't say the same about cloke he's a shocking kick at goal.I always seem to not get nervous also when dawes is having a shot even though he has got a awkward kicking style.

Beams is a good/simple kick but his kicking is NOWHERE NEAR Didak's.
Not now and not 2 years ago. Beams is a fantastic young player but let's not turn him into the messiah.

Didak's efficiency has gone down slightly but the level of difficulty of some of the kicks he attempts is huge and he still hits most targets. Didak's a brilliant kick.

Buckley's efficiency wasn't absolutely magnificent - he missed more targets than people on here will probably admit but was still the best kick i've ever seen.

On Beams goal kicking and field kicking are two totaly different skills. Medhurst is an example of someone who is an awesome (generally) kick for goal but average field kick.

As someone else has mentioned Beams is a neat field kick and excellent decision maker with the ball. You don't need to have exceptional kicking skills to be an extremely effective kick.

He has already shown he is a mid capable of kicking goals and could probably make a handy pinch hitting flanker although I doubt you'd want to use him out of the midfield too often. It is just another string to the bow I guess.

On Didak. This this and more this. Also getting the ball in the midfield takes the congestion and pressure around him up a notch more often.

His accuracy in terms of goalkicking tapered off a little towards the end of the season, probably due to a bit of fatigue really. I seem to remember at round 19 or 20 his accuracy was really great at that stage but missed a few shots on goal in his later matches.

He definitely struck me as a strong shot at goal who found the right position when floating forward, he can kick it a fair way when he gets a hold of it as well. It's good to have that string in your bow, if he can contribute something in terms of the midfield goalscoring then that would be great, he's already kicked 14 goals in 18 matches which is fantastic for his first season.

It is interesting Goal Kicking can be taught look back at James Manson from 30 metres he ended up as one of our most reliable in his time.

I remember hearing Tom Hafey years ago on 3 LO talking about Saun Rehn when he was at Adelaide kicked 2 goals 9 behinds in a game (or so). Tommy just said natural goal kickers were guys who kicked goals all the way through junior football. They know how to kick goals it is natural for them they have been doing always. Most really good goalkickers kicked bags and bags of goals in juniors I remember "hearing about Daic's kicking 13 from Centre Half Back" in under 15's.

I am not sure what Position Clokey played as a kid but his old man was an awkward but reasonably reliable kick. Dawes has always been a forward so yes awkward but I would be as happy with him as Jack kicking in the Adelaide final goal.

Jack is a fantastic kick but not sure he is a natural goal kicker. But whilst he has gone into the midfield I still believe Did's is our best alround kick for goal. Leon great on the run but he misses set shots, Daisy has gone off set shots in the past year and Swanny was originally a gun but now he scrambles goals.

And back to the thread Beams is a good midfield goal kicker but I actually think Steele is a better goal kicker. Again the Tommy Hafey line was it 10 goals in the TAC Grand Final sure some would have been into open goals hand ball over the top etc but who else has kicked 10 goals in our side when it counted!

There is another natural goal kicker in the Caff but we are trying to turn him into a hbf.

Well he should not be a Turnover Merchant then
Barham only turns it over as an example of how Steele kicks. He's actually an elite disposer but is trying to make a point. He also wants to wipe the constant smile off Steele's face!
