I am surprised on here that Beams is getting the most hype when we have Steele at 11 and another Slider in the Draft in Blight at 45.The Media is also getting on the Beams bandwagon.

Why is he the Most Hyped?

Maybe the ink work?

I would definitely have to agree that the ink work helps make him different in a sense. Because it shows that he has confidence in himself, and that translates into selling papers. He is hyped as one of the best inside-midfielders in this draft, hence, why Collingwood considering using their 1st round pick on him.

He isn't as hyped as people think, its just that we're getting ALL the information regarding Collingwood on our forum but if you asked around with opposition, they'd know just as much about him as any other opposition draft pick. Someone like Tom Swift, Jordan Lisle and Jackson Trengrove are constantly being talked about/hyped up because they are sliders.

All I hope for is that Beam lives up to Collingwood's expectations for when we considered using our 1st pick in the draft, ahead of names like Swift, Blease, Strauss and Shuey ect.

It's the combination of stories: Turning down the Gold Coast offer; the rumour (that is almost certainly true, from the looks of it) that we were interested in him at pick #11; subsequently getting him at pick #29; his tattoos, which are more extensive than I can remember on any underage draftee; the fact that he's the first Queenslander Collingwood has taken in the National Draft; Derek Hine's comparison to Scott Burns; the rumour that he's been given Burnsy's #17...

There's just more stories related to Beams than any of our other draftees.

... the shock that we selected him over Hannebery. :p

Nah, I'll get over it soon enough, at least we didn't pick up a spud at #29. :D

Hannebery's one of those guys that could go in any direction - He could be as good as a Marc Murphy or Rhys Palmer-type of player, or he could be a complete spud ala Adam Iacobucci, but most likely, he'll be somewhere in between. It's always hard to tell with his type.

I've got to say I liked him more than most, and that I would have leant towards the former, rather than the latter, but I liked Beams as well, and trust that Hine's judgment to prefer Beams over Hannebery is much, much more likely to be the correct one.

Not almost, it is true. In his interview on SEN after the draft was over he said that they had strongly considered using our pick 11 on him. That is straight from the horses mouth.

I love the kid already.

Seems like Dane Swan MK II to me.

Has a heap of positives on his side, from his readiness physically to play AFL, through winning a flag with Southport, and the fact he is a pure inside midfielder, something which every club that has won a flag recently has had.

The tats are something different for a kid, but hey, the motto he has from his junior days (has slipped my mind now), and the aussie flag on his arm, cmon, he's just being patriotic.

Wish Beams nothing but luck, and if he turns out anything like Burns or Black, or maybe even a combo of the two, everyone will be saying he shouldve been taken at 11, and we got a steal at 29.

Beams also looks more AFL ready Rusty has a lot smaller frame, i think some people are still nervous that Rusty's lack of speed may not do him well in the AFL.

i think at times ppl put a massive emphasis on pure pace in testing. i read on another forum about james hird (not for a second am i comparing the 2) but he didnt have raw pace, however very rarely was he lead to the footy or beaten out. footy smarts which rusty seems to have plenty of can make up for pace, i.e. better reader of the play/flight of the ball.

A slow footballer will move the ball more quicky into a favourable position than a speedy athlete. For an inside mid, speed between the ears is vastly more important than speed on the ground. Rusty might be slower than Beams, but if reports are right, it is Beams who is more likely to be tagged. I haven't seen enough of the kid to be right about this, but I suspect Beams could be much more project than plug and play. His early progress in the VFL will be very interesting to watch.

And no recruiting manager has ever lied about anything to the media

While I think it's almost certainly true that he RATED him around the #11 mark, I'd doubt that he was seriously considering taking him at the #11 pick, knowing that there was a chance he'd make it through to #29 - There was always going to be another highly rated kid like Sidebottom around at the selection.

If another one or two clubs ahead of us had have gone small, and Sidebottom was off the board, then it's POSSIBLE we would have drafted Beams at #11, but I don't believe that he would have been considering drafting Beams there if a Ziebell or Sidebottom ended up being available at the pick.

Believe the translation of that motto was "Strength Through Loyalty" if I remember correctly. I thought that was a promising touch as well.

Beams is probably as hyped as he has been because he stands out in a crowd and because he was the one player who we were most heavily linked with heading into the draft.

The talk of potentially using #11 to snare him was - as Vinnie said - just a slight possibility in the event that things went contrary to what most recruiters were expecting within the top ten. The speed in which Hine read out Sidebottom's name would give a clear indication that he rated Sidebottom (and I imagine Ziebell, Hartlett and Rich also) ahead of Beams.

That's nothing against Beams of course, I'm happy we were able to get a player we obviously tracked and rated highly at the right price, because I doubt he would have been available at our third round picks.

I agree with that we rated him as good as Pick 11 player but we sent some feeders out to see the interest and it came back as there is a very good chance he would be there at 29 so we where more than happy to wait for him at 29 and Thankfully that what happend.

Nothing against beams being the 2nd round pick it's just fantastic we rated him top 10, top 15 player and got him at 29:thumbsu:
