Re: Cousins - should we look at him?

Na, I wouldn't go near him - even if he was available which I don't think he ever will be.

He is not a 20 kid that took some drugs when he was pissed - he is nearing 30 and has shown himself over a number of years to not be the type of person we are looking for at our club - despite how well he plays football.

Further, football today is a multi-million dollar business and we cannot (especially given the current media attention on our club) do anything that might jeopardise our reputation - you can just imagine the media we would get if cousins ends up at the Hawks.

As a result the risk is just too high for any possible reward which only would be a few years anyway.

Re: Cousins - should we look at him?

I'm speechless.

As you yourself said, AH - it's not a problem that's limited to one club.

He's been playing footy since he was 17 and probably hasn't had anyone actually say "No" to him.

If he can be helped to overcome his problems and can get back in shape, i'd like to see a club, including ours, possibly give him a one-year lifeline.

Can you imagine what would happen if he came to the Hawks and then did a bender? Our club would take a long time to recover from the humiliation. Also, we have a young list devloping into a good one. The last thing we need is an undisciplined 31 year old who has played 7 games in 2 years. Forget it.

Re: Cousins - should we look at him?

I would look at him. The way he has been treated is a disgrace and if the Hawks showed some integrity to try and help the guy I would respect them more than if they did not.

Biggest media beat up of all time and Cuz is no worse than 10-15% of other players in the game.

I'd really love to know why you think the way he has been treated is a disgrace.

He's never officially tested positive for using illicit drugs under the current system?

The AFL has said that there are players from other clubs who have tested positive under this system without attracting any of the attention that Ben has.

He's not alone in this, yet he's the scapegoat.

Quoted for accuracy.

That's a joke.

Drunk in a public place (Crown Towers a couple of years back).

Ran away from a booze bus rather than take his medicine, leaving his then-girlfriend in the car to take the music (2006).

Has had and appear to continue to have connections with Perth's underground element, especially John Kizon. The Eagles were quick to send his pal Michael Gardiner packing to the Saints when they realised they could dispense with him, but pussy-footed around with Cousins.

Had a lovely trip to a Malibu rehab centre where no doubt he met a lot of famous people in the same situation (2007). The Eagles put him on a last chance contract under which if he stepped out of line by a millimetre, his career at the Eagles was finished, but did that wake him up? Obviously not.

Provided an insincere apology (really only apologised that he was caught, not for what he has actually done) that made a mockery of himself and his club.

Then the events of a couple of days ago.

He has had multiple chances to get his life back on track, but he's frittered each and every one of them away, yet he is classed as a scapegoat.

Drunk in a public place (Crown Towers a couple of years back). Getting drunk is a crime for AFL footballers now? Wouldn't 99% be guilty then?

Ran away from a booze bus rather than take his medicine, leaving his then-girlfriend in the car to take the music (2006). Agreed, that was shocking - but it's a matter of drink driving, which again a number of players over the years have been guilty as well.

The Eagles were quick to send his pal Michael Gardiner packing to the Saints when they realised they could dispense with him, but pussy-footed around with Cousins. Unsubstantiated at this stage, Dixie. I'm not denying any of it's not true (because I honestly have no clue about all that).

Do personal circumstances get taken into consideration? One of his best mates died a week and a half ago (straight after which Cousins took a drugs test and passed). Sure, it doesn't excuse him hitting the drugs, but it's certainly something to remember when we lambast him...

See above.

I'll add to that list:

Involved in a punch up with Daniel Kerr at a club trophy night several years ago.

Arrested outside the Crown Casino for being drunk in a publc place.

Suspended by West Coast early this season for missing training.

Added to all the above, as well as refusing to cooperate with police, which was the last straw and the reason he was de-listed.

How many more chances does one human being get? Any other player would have been sacked long before now.

To call him a scapegoat is ridiculous.

Re: Cousins - should we look at him?

Phil, being drunk in a public place IS a crime. That's why people are jailed for it.

As for the links with Michael Gardiner and gang-land criminals was proven. That is why West Coast delisted Gardiner. Police confirmed their involvement in a report.

I'd really like to know what this guy has to do before you think he deserves to be punished ... murder someone?
