What would you give up to get Ben Cousins next year?

I say either a 2nd round draft pick or in the pre season draft with Cousins
putting a high price (say $500,000) on his head so no other club gets him.

Thoughts?

I think he will get to any club he nominates in the PSD.

Won't nominate for the National IMO.

You dont have to give up anything for him, he is in the draft.

Even so, I dont thionk we need anyone teaching the players how to score drugs and who is who in the criminal zoo.

We do need to give something up to get him - ie we need to give up the draft pick with which we select him in the draft.

The question is, would we try to pick him in the ND (if he nominates) or would we pick him up in the PSD.

I would put that we would not use any pick below 45ish for him in the National draft, and we would pick him up with whatever pick we get in the pre-season draft. Although I doubt he will get to us (if we assume pick between 10-12 PSD).

I personally would love to see him at Collingwood next year. Very much doubt it will happen though.

Theoretically we can pick him up in the PSD even if we have a low pick as he can nominate a price that no other team would be willing to pay. But then again, maybe a club will pick him up with a late pick in the National Draft

I would like to get him too!

Funny to see so many clubs already saying 'no thanks', but I bet come PSD, they'll have changed their minds.

Other PSD candidates:
Yze, Nick Davis, Brett Burton...

Not much competition for Cousins....he'll go No.1

IMO Nick Davis charecter is much worse than Ben Cousins. Hope Sydney give him the arse and he gets left in limbo - the maggot.

If Ben Cousins is fit and over his drug problems I expect Collingwood to do anything reasonable to get him. If we dont try our midfield will only get worse!!!!

I think like Stuart Dew, Ben Cousins will nominate for both the National and PSD, and he'll go in the National.

I would be prepared to put up a 3rd round pick or later, which for us would mean around #47-ish.

Mind you, I'd also be very keen for the Pies to trade a few players in order to improve our draft choices, so perhaps we could get another second-round choice or an earlier third-rounder to chase young talent in a strong draft. This is not the year to sit on our hands and be happy with Reed and Keeffe coming cheaply.

Can Cousins go into the PSD asking for a huge amount of money and we use all our cap space to sign him to a one year deal?

Yes, but it assumes that;
a) we have more cap space than the teams below us on the ladder, and
b) that we want to spend all that money on one player.

I don't find this scenario likely given the number of teams who will be above us in the PSD order.

Indeed, your boys are perfectly capable of doing those things on their own.

We'll still have to give something up for him, no matter which way you word it. The only players for whom we don't have to give anything up are pre-listed international rookies (eg. Clarke, Dyas), and the likes of Lachlan Keeffe whom can be taken with our last pick in the rookie draft.... even then we have to "give up" a spot on our rookie list.

If Benjamin wanted to come to Collingwood as his club of choice (or indeed any other Melbourne-based club) he's going about it the right way. Ricky Nixon on Footy Classified the other night was still saying he didn't know if Cousins was going to play AFL football next year. :thumbsu:

Between the denials, Cousins' avoidance of playing at VFL level, and his generally keeping out of Victoria over the last few weeks, he's doing a great job.

He should nominate for the draft at his earliest opportunity, and then he can continue to saying "I've nominated but I still don't know if I'm going to play next year, it's up to the AFL's medical commission, petrol prices, global warming, interest rates, terrorist activity etc." That way he can spend more time flying under the radar rather than there being a big build-up about whether he nominates or not.

I wonder if this "third-year rookie" nomination date is the confirmation I was looking for of the rule change allowing rookies to be retained for three years (ie. Brent MacAffer)?

Can Ben Cousins nominate for the PSD after the ND has occurred, or does draft nominations include both ND and PSD, in which case he would say, Ï'm only nominating for the PSD?

I just thought if it was possible and we wanted him, tell him to nominate after the ND at which time some clubs had already filled their lists, with only 8 or so teams participating in the PSD.

If he has to nominate before both ND & PSD and he wants to play for us, I think the best chance is to get him nominate for the PSD only and put a large 1 year deal on his head.

The rebuilding teams with the earlier picks wouldn't touch him:

Dees, Freo, WCE, Essendon, carlton & Crows.

All depends on ladder position.

So we've still got 3 and a half months to run on the "where will Ben Cousins play football next year" saga?

Good grief - I'm over it already.

Nah, that's just until nominations close. It's a clear four months til we know where he's going. ;)

Ben starred in the 3AW Rumour File this morning, when Elsie of Elsternwick, or similar, confided - and it was a certainty - that he would be playing in the black and white next year.

I like the sounds of that :thumbsu:

I wonder what her sauce is?

Elsie of Elsternwick? Sounds like confirmation enough...I'll take it!
Now to guess which number he'll get so I can get on my back in readiness...lol
