“We haven’t had a dedicated ruck coach here so both King and Gardiner have been really good for me. Gardiner has been a real inspiration on the field, just playing with him and watching him, and King really helps me off the field.”

“I go through my tapes with King and also work with him on some extra training. He is exceptional at what he does and he has really gone out of his way to help me, which has been fantastic.”

Kicking the equaliser goal in the Saints’ Round 17 draw against Hawthorn just two weeks ago was a new experience for McEvoy, who was surprised at the extra attention it seemed to bring.

Was that possibly the best game of his career? 18 hitouts, 11 possessions & 2 goals, also had to be main ruckman after Gardi went down injured.
This could be the breakout game in his career we have waited for and he will go on to the next level and show the competion what he's made off.

Ben McEvoy was picked by St Kilda with the No.9 selection in the 2007 National Draft and was 200 centimetres tall and weighed 95 kilograms when he was drafted as an 18 year old. McEvoy was recruited as a ruckman from his local club Dederang-Mt Beauty and the Murray Bushrangers Under-18s. The profile for McEvoy in AFL 2008 said “A strong mark with excellent endurance, he captained Vic Country at the NAB AFL Under-18s Championships and won All-Australian selection.”1

McEvoy, grew up in Dederang, about 330km northeast of Melbourne and in close proximity to Mt Beauty. McEvoy’s transition from growing up in the country to being an AFL footballer living in Melbourne was made considerably easier by being mentored by Justin Koschitzke and Steven King who also moved from the country at the start of their AFL careers.

''I've met very few people who make me feel small, but he's (Sandilands) certainly one of them."

He played that one match in his first year, and another 11 last season, including a nine-game stretch through the middle of the year. It was what he wanted, it sped up his progress and revealed more of those tiny tricks each ruckman has.

But it also wore him out - physically and otherwise. Called back for round 22 then dropped for the finals, McEvoy was disappointed to miss out on September, but at the same time knew he wasn't yet ready for it.

Still, it hasn't been a stress-free season. The Sunday after St Kilda beat Geelong in round 13, he was visiting older sister Kate in Stawell - to see how she was, following a car accident - when he learnt his 19-year-old brother, Pete, was being airlifted to the Alfred Hospital after falling from a cliff while bushwalking near their home.

Pete had a fractured skull and surgery to drain a blood clot, and is all better now (save for some separate appendix problems). But at the time McEvoy would sit with him at night, in hospital, to give his parents a break and make sure they were looking after themselves.

Despite public opinion suggesting otherwise, I actually thought he was okay in GF2.

took some nice grabs and played to his strengths.

everyone knows that he doesn't have explosive pace but he'll run all day.

expecting another rung of improvement next year from Benny and should be cementing his spot in the team as the number 1 ruck IMO.

Just have to pray to the football gods nothing happens to him after our ruck cleanout post-season. He and Gardiner are pretty much the only bonafide rucks we have right now, and Big Mick's going to have to be very carefully managed.

Looking forward to seeing the Big Mac this season. Can see him shouldering the ruckload for the entire year with Gardiner playing second fiddle. But as was mentioned earlier the lack of depth is a real worry for us if one the main guys goes down and we have to rely on Kosi (hahaha god help us) as backup. As this would then take away from our forward and leave us incredibly inexperienced up there.

Ben McEvoy has put his hand up for the No. 1 ruck job at St Kilda with a breakout pre-season.

With McEvoy looming as the frontman, with potential support from Justin Koschitzke and Rhys Stanley, the Saints believe they are well placed - even if Michael Gardiner's recent surgery in Sweden is unsuccessful.

"McEvoy is really blossoming," St Kilda coach Ross Lyon said.

Lyon revealed McEvoy had broken 10 minutes for a 3km time trial this summer, putting him in the AFL's elite.

It’s hard to believe this 200cm ruckman is just 21 years of age.

“I’ve been lucky to get so many games over the last two years and the experience has been invaluable,” said McEvoy.

“With Kosi [Justin Koschitzke] and Gardi [Michael Gardiner] being out it’s been a really good opportunity for me personally. I have done a lot of work with Kingy [Steven King] throughout the pre-season and I feel like I’m starting to get some reward for all that work” he said.

“I still have a long way to go, I think I’m on par with most ruckmen with how long it takes to develop. It’s an art form and you come up against some very experienced players, so it definitely takes time,” McEvoy explained.

McEvoy has also stepped up to an adjusted workload this season as a result of the new interchange rule and said that in some ways the new rule has suited his strengths.

“In nearly all the games I have previously played there’s been two ruckmen, so you were playing closer to half a game rather than a full game. Although the work load has increased, I have pretty good endurance and so far it has suited me,” he said.

Heard a whisper from friends of the McEvoys that Ben is very unhappy at the club and doesn't get on with Ross. Hope none of it is true, but has anyone heard anything similar?

Couldn't imagine why he'd be unhappy? He's getting plenty of games and Ross has publicly praised his improvement.

Re: 2011 Player Reviews

BEN McEVOY

McEvoy was widely tipped to be one of St Kilda’s most improved players in 2011, however he has exceeded all expectations to almost single handedly carry St Kilda’s ruck division and develop into one of St Kilda’s most influential players.

McEvoyBen245a.jpg

McEvoy forced to shoulder the majority of StKilda’s ruck duties in the absence of Michael Gardiner and Justin Koschitzke who missed the majority of the season through injury. There was concern surrounding StKilda’s ruck stocks but Ben McEvoy was a revelation throughout 2011, developing into St Kilda’s number 1 ruckman. McEvoy played in all but one game, and amassed 497 hit-outs (22.6 per game), 199 handballs (9 per game), 118 marks (5.4 per game) and 85 tackles (3.9 per game).

The highlight of McEvoy’s season would have been the remarkable 6 weeks of form from Round 10 to 16 where he averaged 16.1 Disposals (9.5 contested), 30.5 hitouts, 5.8 tackles, 6.3 marks, and 78.1% efficiency per game.

McEvoy capped off his stellar season by winning finishing 12th in Trevor Barker Award and taking home Most Promising Player award at the Saints Best & Fairest.

McEvoy looks set to provide St Kilda with the long-term number 1 ruckman we have been looking for. McEvoy was rated the 2nd best ruckman behind Carlton’s Mathew Kruezar in the 2007 AFL Draft after being selected at Pick 7, but some may argue that he has surpassed Kruezar at this early stage of their careers. He looks set to build on his exceptional career in 2012 & beyond and looks set to become a 200+ gamer for the StKilda Football Club.
