The Age

Ben Reid had to go back in order to go forward.

THE football ground at Bright nestles in a chilly river valley opposite the camping ground. Ben Reid remembers it as a ''mud pit'' on long-shadowed Saturday mornings in his not-so-distant junior career. ''Some days, you might get a bit of snow on the ground,'' he said. It is not hard to imagine: vaporised breaths, shrill whistles, a crunch underfoot and a chorus of boyish shouts.

The MCG also is frequently in shade, thrown not by mountains but its own towering grandstands. Four months ago there, Reid ran out in front of more than 90,000 for his first Anzac Day match. ''You're standing there for the Last Post, and the hairs on the back of your neck stand up,'' he said. ''The cheer after the Last Post is pretty crazy.'' It was just his 10th AFL game.

Good story.

He's getting better, and hopefully can continue to improve as time goes on. That left boot could become one of the great weapons in the AFL one day.

Where are Magpie Greg, understudy and DNine anyway?
Try the main board, or even the Carlton board (me thinks 1-2 of them aren't really pies fans).

As for Reid, he is the best young defender in the AFL, with Essendon's Hurley the only true comparison in regards to age, skill and potential.

I loved the way Reid tore Roughead apart last week, it was a great scalp for him, even though next time we play the Hawks, Reid has to take Buddy.

Reid is a tall, strong attacking defender, they are very rare, and he alone was worth the trade for Tarrant IMO, let alone the "steak knives" we got in the form of the All Australian Medhurst.

Reid will be an All Australian CHB within 3 years.

Even though he looks like he could dominate at CHB for many years, I'd like to see him play forward one more time as he has all the attributes and may not suffer from the confidence issues with his kicking.

He has all the attributes, and its easier to find good defenders than it is gun forwards (Hawthorn may disagree!)

Agree with this, he's been one of our best this year. Strange that he's flown under the radar with everyone jizzing over Hurley and Frawley, but I suspect next year will be the one where people really sit up and take notice.
