Apparently he is looking ripped and is training hard for 09' to get back some form and respect. Eddies swipe must have cut deep.

Maybe he wont be a vfl man for 09' if he is as willing as I have been told, hopefully big things for him in 09'!

That's good news. Maybe he's found the motivation to work himself to a thread. If only he had yet to produce his best footy! But the transformation will have to be remarkable to please many who post here, particularly after the season he's had.

More power to him.:thumbsu:

Congratulations, I think that is the first "training the house down" post I've seen for season 2009.

And only three weeks after the Grand Final - great effort.

Rumour has it Benny is also cherry ripe, pumped, tearing up the track, and keen as mustard.

I thought it would be of note, an old favourite of some fans before he went off the rails, and the fact he was nearly gone. Copped a spray that was leaked to the media and didnt have an impact in 08.

Heard it all before.

The true test is season 2008, not October 2008.

I expect he'll fight his way back into the team, but he's not the future of the club. The only reason he's still up the club is because Rhyce Shaw asked for a trade. They wanted one of them gone and they got a volunteer, saving Benny's skin for one more year.

People really have gone overboard with this 'future' and play the kids stuff.

Benny will be 28 next year......still has 4-5 years of footy in him.

Benny has twice finished 2nd in the Copeland, in 04 & 06...so when at his best he is a very valuable member of the team.

Swan has acknowledged that part of his transformation into our best mid is down to him literally trying to keep up with Benny during pre-season. So hopefully some young mids do the same, ie daisy, wellingham etc to build their fitness up.

I agree with Timmy pretty much. Won't change the fact he can't kick. Not being able to make the seniors whilst a side that could have nearly been an under 21's side plays isn't a great sign. Benny is a great club man and if he can get back in give some good service and force a kid to work harder for the spot and give some guidance I will be rapt because it is good for him and the club. That said given his limitation with his kicking he will certainly be a player who will be on the fringe from now on out.

Ummmmm most off the boys have just got back from Bail where by all reports were smashed 24/7

Couldnt be training to hard also Sydney tried getting Ben Johnson but Pies knocked back the offer

He was a very handy player when he was on song....kick or no kick.
He is hard at the ball and won a lot of contested possession and more often than not did something useful with the ball.
As he is still on the list I'm hoping he hits top form.

We need everyone in form for a successful year even if it only puts the pressure on for spots.

Look at his contested possies for the year. His not an inside player by any stretch of the imagination and this year would be lucky if he had double figure contested possies for the season.

His form all year and most of last year was very poor. I just can't see him recapturing the form that he is remembered for. I have no doubts he can be a handy player and as I said I really hope he does force he way into the side and keeps his spot. Even then I can't imagine him being a key player and hence being on the fringe. A run and carry player who can't kicks value is always limited see Rhyce Shaw this year for evidence of that.

I am only talking about years previous to 2007...it is a given that he had a bad year.
I am concerned he has a year more like 2006, when he was 2nd in the copeland.

The six weeks for his 2007 indiscretion seemed to take a fair bit out of his confidence?

The point is if he is in the squad he has to get back his best form and his best form was good.

From all accounts he is doing everything possible at this stage to have a good crack...and good on him.

Agreed Pie Eyed. Hopefully he takes his two mates catch on to his work ethic and jump along for the ride. I think a guy in his situation busting his gut can have a really positive result on the rest of the list. There is a positivity and an awe that surrounds a guy doing everything to have a second shot that can catch on. Hopefully this is the case.

He has to know his career is over if he has another bad year.. 18 months ago you couldn't have imagined Holland's career being over.. he better extract the digit

I feel like a troll because I honestly seem to disagree with you on everything but I think Holland was always going to be fighting for a position sooner rather then later. He had a big public profile and was hence viewed in a better light as a footballer. He was slow. Not a good enough midfielder in his own right to play midfield without tagging (or at least for it to be worth it.) He gave the ball to much hang time when he kicked and was probably the least handy of the older midfielders (being Licca, Burns, O'Bree and Dutchy) something was always going too have to give as the younger guys broke into the side. He was always fighting an uphill battle and the injuries wrote him off completely.

A couple of years ago mid-season he was number one in the AFL for effective disposal % and praise was heaped on him after all the probs he'd had with his kicking in the past.
Since then he has done stuff all.
As much as I'd like to be proven wrong, I think that it's all over for Benny.

Holland always had the option of going back to the forward pocket and being a damaging goal sneak (he is deadly in front of goal) that could keep the ball in the forwardline thanks to the tagging skills he learnt in the midfield.. in fact that would have been perfect now Leon has moved into the midfield.. so perhaps you just didn't give it enough thought.. or you'd find yourself always agreeing with me :p

No I gave it plenty of thought and Think Holland the foward pocket would not have got a go over Thomas, Medhurst who played small foward most of the year. Didak who should go back to playing as a small foward and would have been questionable at getting a game above J-Mac and Shaz who played as fowards for most of their time in the ones.

I think we clearly look at football from two different angles.

So Dick and Macaffer have no hope of breaking into the side then

1. Your statement was regarding Dutchy who was always going to be in trouble if he spent a year at VFL level and with Thomas as well as guys like J-Mac and Shaz the spot as a small foward wasn't avalible to him this year. In the future all three of those guys will spend more time in the midfield which in turn opens up more small foward spots.

2. I don't know whether their will be room for both Dick and Macaffer. I don't know whether either will make it. I think their is a veiw that Dick will be a midfielder which is misguided and doubt Macaffer has what it takes to make the step up to being a consistant AFL player.

So you don't know if there would have been room for Holland either if he was not struck down by injury, good logic :thumbsu:

Haven't I already stated that I think Holland was fighting an uphill battle???? What don't you understand. We have more small foward flank types then is reasonable to carry in one side. Holland was always going to struggle to get a game regardless and both of Dick and Macaffer will struggle to fit in the same side if either of them is ever good enough to play consistant firsts football.

Very easy to say after the fact and after he had debilitating injuries

What a crap thread! Wheres the photos of him training the house down OR looking fit? I might start another Carl steinfort thread:D
