There has been a bit of talk on other threads about who should stay and who should go. Bentick's name was thrown in and IMO this was a surprise. i think he has been good this year (when not many really have) and will only keep improving - and could develop into a star centre player for us and form a great duo with a developing murphy... what do you guys think about him?i would only get rid of him if he was part of a beneficial deal for us

He wouldn't be one of the players I would get rid of that's for sure. Still room for improvement but that will come in due course. I say keep him!

I think he's shown that he can cut it against sides with B-grade midfields, but struggles himself when pitted against the top ranked players. Maybe he'll get better, but I think that's where he'll always sit. Great to be able to bring on a player like him while a champion takes a rest, but won't ever be that champion himself.

Good solid player, wants to continue to improve though.

I'm a fan of him, because he gets up from the bottom of packs unlike 90% of our midfield.

at best hes a good ordinary player

About spot on I reckon.

That is a major issue on our list, we've got too many good ordinary players who try hard, but lack consistency and skill.

Exactly. He's one of those players that you would put under the B or C list of star quality of players.

I mean in terms of A-grade players, we've only really got:
Fev
Whitnall
Stevens (when he bothers)
Waite (if and when he stays uninjured)

Bentick, Simpson, Wiggins et al are all players under the B and C grade players list. They're ok and will work hard for you (esp Bentick getting in and under), but they aren't going to win a grand final for you.

Very well put.

Don't anyone dare talk about Bentick like this.
The young guy is still learning and if he had some flipping support he would be a top player.

Worry about hacks like Wiggins, Predagast, Deluca, Davies.

You are pretty unrealistic if you ever think Bentick is going to be a top notch AFL player.

The kid is still learning his craft for fluck sake, he could easily become a Sam Mitchell type player for us, problem is to much is left to him when it comes to the in and unders, when the rest of the midfield contributes and plays well Bentick is always in the best players just needs time and support and he will become an a list centreman no doubt, he has all the right attributes except pace, but as all good slow centremen he knows how to make space for himself like he did so well against the Bombers. Nothing wrong with this young man that time and experience won't fix IMO.:thumbsu:

No1 said he'll be a top notch player, but he'll be more than serviceable.

At least he goes hard, not like some other players who get paid $500K and wait for the ball to come to them and turn it over.

he'll be right the kid, in time, with support and guidance.

Worry about Livingstone and Bannister and Deluca as i mentioned b4.

Fancy Deluca getting a game. Can't kick, can't handball, can't bend over, can't mark, can't do anything except run.

Cut from the same cloth as Jimmy Plunkett...both could/can get their hands on the ball 30-40 times a game, but can't hurt the opposition unfortunately.

While I like them both, each lacked speed, penetration in their kicks and a composure in tight pack situations to be any better than average players...Think the club should persist for another year or two.

Add to that Bowyer and Brett Johnson...both were quite tough and could collect numerous possession if given the chance. Bentick is being given a chance because he might develop more as he is younger. However, if we pinch a decent midfielder in the PSD (.e.g. with Kouta's contract ending), pick up another Murphy in the draft, and Blackwell progresses he might struggle in the next couple of years. Just thinking the other day what a player like Luke Ball or Brett Kirk would be worth to Carlton at the moment?

Bentick is one of the few guys on our list that we can count on to put his head over the ball every time. He may not be Chris Judd, but not many are. He pretty important to our midfield and his importance will only increase as he, and the other young midfielders, develop.

Agree he is an in and under player who just needs to improve his skills a bit. This will come with game time. Also he didn't take a backward step against Hayes last week and certainly wasn't our worst midfielder. That honour went to Houlihan:thumbsu:

I'm sorry, but you cannot compensate for lack of skill/talent/pace/influence by being a 'head over the ball' type player. I'm not saying he is poor in each area (although extremely slow) but he would be average at best.

If we are suggesting Bentick will be any more than a good average player, then we are certainly accepting mediocrity at Carlton. No, we dont have anyone else at the moment, but that does not make him a good player.

Despite being a fan of his, I cannot see him being around for more than another 2-3 years when we finally have some talented midfielders.

Someone like Waite has a way to go too be a A Grader.

Bentick is a good, tough player, but lacks silky skills / punishing disposal. His life span at Carlton really depends on our future mid field recruiting, but he is definately not on the chopping block in the next few years, plenty more before him.

He has a real go, and with more Murphy's, Stevens, and one or two more quality mid fielders around, will prove of some worth.

Bentick worries me with his pace. I know he has never been thought of as fast but he looked especially slow last week. I don't think there is room for Blackwell and Bentick. At this stage I would think that Blackwell will outlast him.

He like anyone needs about 3-4 years to develop. Will never be an A-grade player, but imo, he could develop into a good consistent player. Perhaps in the Fraser Brown mould.

Fraser Brown >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Bentick.

Bentick has nothing on Fraser Brown, the only thing they have in common is they both are in and under types, but that's it.

Well said! Bentick will be a future depth player, that is all.I would be extremely concerned if he was still our starting centre in 2 years time.

Any to even suggest AB has anything on Fraser 'The Dog' Brown is quite amusing.
