I actually reckon Bentley has been underrated a little by a fair few of you guys.

Wouldn't surprise me to see him get the nod as a nominated rookie. He has been in the system for a few years already, has a big body and can step straight into our team and not look out of place because of a smaller body.

He's no star but he is a solid footballer that can bring an extra element of strength if we need another option for a strong body in the midfield.

If he does miss out on a spot as a nominated rookie from the start of the season I would not count him out of getting the nod for the round 12 nominated rookie. If we're heading towards finals we could use another strong body as an option.

Say we don't nominate the kid at all this year then does he have to be promoted on the senior list for next year otherwise it's goodbye, bon voyage cya later?

No, he's a normal rookie so if the club chooses to keep him on the rookie list for a 2nd season then they can do so.

I had an opportunity to watch the replay against Geelong yesterday and I have to admit Bentley looked the part. I certainly didnt notice him as much when watching the game live.

I think early he seemed to miss a few passes but as the game wore on it became apparent he certainly knows how to read the play and find space. He was used regularly as a link up player and I thought he had a good game.

He has neither the electrifying pace of Garlett or Joseph but reads the play well and can use his size to do the in and under work.

IMO he is a player from the same mould as BENTICK, BANNISTER and HADLEY. At this stage he sits at the bottom of the pecking order until we see some more game time from him. He should at the very least be a good depth player.

Seems like a good bloke doing everything he can to get a game. They certainly appear to be giving him every chance to prove himself. He does look good before he disposes of it. Russel 2.0??

I have Bentley 5th in line behind Gartlett, Jacobs, Joseph and Phieffer. We have PLENTY of players around the same size with far more ability. Regardless of the others, I cant see him getting getting the nod above Gartlett or Jacobs who both play in positions where our stocks are considerably lower, and both look like they have some serious talent.

Well J....so far you've called for about 4 to be nominated so there is an increasing chance you will be right ;)

Sorry if this is all too complicated for you.

AJ and Sauce - prior to round 1.
Garlett/Bentley - round 12.

And why is that?

Pfeiffer has shown nothing this preseason (I know he has been injured) but didn't show much more when he was on the senior list last season.

Even though it's preseason Bentley has shown much more than Pfeiffer did last season. He can make an impact in the senior team, something which Pfeiffer has struggled to do.

There is no way that Pfeiffer should be ahead of Bentley in terms of being a nominated rookie.

That match winning goal pfeiffer kicked over his head against collingwood was disgracful, im glad he got dropped for it and was happy to see him remain in the ants for the rest of the year!!!

Yes, it was against Freo, and it was a good goal.

But people have got to be kidding if they are suggesting we should have Pfeiffer ahead based on him kicking 1 goal last season despite not doing anything else for the rest of the game.

So what has Bentley demonstrated that Pfeiffer hasn't?

Agree with that. As much as I see Hadley as our best in and under hard bodied midfielder (by the length of the flemington straight I might add) to allow guys like Judd to play other roles, Bentley has been fairly prominent in all his appearances so far. Sure his kicking isn't the best in the side, but his capacity to win contested footy is quite good. There were a few contests against the cats where he was more than happy to engage in, and at points initiate, contact. On numerous occasions he at least halved the contest and forced a stoppage - certainly a plus for us. He reads the play quite well and this allows him to make more contests if needed. Surely when you look at the people he can free up by playing this role (Judd for one) and therefore allow our better ball users to be the links and not the ball winners he could well have a noticeable impact on the team.

Bentley has shown himself to be a consistent performer throughout matches.

Pfeiffer has shown he can do 1 or 2 good things and then goes missing for entire quarters and halves.

I'd rather elevate someone that we know won't look completely lost out there if we need him to perform.

Can get the ball = yes
Can run the corridor = yes
Can hit the target 80%+ = no

No elevation.

Efficient kicking is incredibly important. Every club carries someone...we carry Carrazzo...we cant carry two on the field!

Ratten said in exasperation pre draft...get me players who can kick!!!!!!

Note:
Still think J is right about the round 12 elevation. I think he will get promoted there - just not pre-round 1.

I was certain the goal was against collingwood, I need to stop drinking at games....
