Gee, this is harder than I first thought. I was looking at other people's 22's and scoffing atr some of the inclusions/omitions. I take them all back!

Here's mine

FB Welsh Big Mal M johnson
HBF McPhee Fletch NLM
C Dyson Watson Campo
HFF Lovett Lucas J Johnson
FF Hird Lloyd C Johns
OBB Hille Stanton Pev
IB Laycock, Slattery, Monfries, Heff

EMERG Winder, Bradley, Ryder, Davey

I tihnk JJ will become a perm forward used as a pinch hitter in the guts when the going gets tough and I expect 30 goals from him.

Swap Dyson and McPhee over perhaps, I've always thought Dyson could become a real damaging running HBF'er, and McPhee or NLM could grow into top wings/mids.

So it's Pev, Watson, Stanton starting on ball, with rotations in from JJ, Hird, Lovett, Dyson, MJ, Slattery, Monfries and Heffernan.....not too bad I think

McVeigh not good enough to be in our best 22? Also, in Pev, Heff and Slattery you have named 3 taggers- way too many! Pev should be depth only if we are to go forward, in my opinion. Heff will be our starting tagger next year and hopefully, by the end of the year, Slattery will be our number 1 tagger. Bradley is definitely in our best 22- needs to be given a chance to hold down chb whist Fletch and Michael are still around to help him out. Monfries is also a starting 18 player, probably on a half forward flank rotating into the middle. Davey will also be given every chance early I would suggest. I agree with you about one of NLM or McPhee playing permanent wing. I would also like Lovett given a chance on a wing, with Davey his replacement in the forward line.:thumbsu:

I dont agree that you can have too many taggers as long as they win their duels. having said that you should only include them if they are in the best 22, which pev is not.

**********e.....Mcveigh definitely in best 22...best half dozen in my opinion. I'll pop Dyson on the bench and NLM onto the wing....McVeigh HBF/run with guts....

I hope monfires and Bradley slot into best 18....but I cant take anyone off that list....

I'm not sure about the "three taggers" though....i see Slattery as more of a controlling HBF/HBP type for the next couple of seasons, and that's what I have him on the bench for....MJ into the middle, Slattery locks up the D50....other than that, I'm comfortable with 2 negating types on at once....

It's a tough gig - I'm almost praying for injuries !!!!

I'm not the biggest fan of Welsh either. While some defenders have made an art form out of turning defence into attack with purposeful and creative rebound, Woosha has a more conservative or perhaps even hesitative style. A style, which at best, is conducive to maintaining possession, but at worst, wastes attacking opportunities and restricts our movement of the ball forward.

I think a lot of that comes from the fact that we really only had one reliable big man up forward this season and he played a lot from the goal-square. In years gone by Welsh has been more prone to running the footy from the backline.

I think McPhee having a quiet one also minimised Welsh's effectiveness. Welsh delivering to McPhee by hand or to Lucas by foot makes him a more effective player down back because he can and does win the footy. Players that are hard at the footy need good players around them. You actually need a target to kick to.

I'm surprised at you guys.

I've seen Gumby in only one team, he will be your future this man and will rip up the comp in the next few years

Yes, Gumby will be our future. Lloyd and Lucas are our present.
Gumby will play senior footy, but until we see what he can do at AFL level, he's not in our best 22.

Heres a pacy, unaccountable;) , skillful midfield I'd like to see by the end of the season:

C: Dyson Nash Winderlich
Ruck: Laycock Stanton Watson

On the Welsh topic. As I posted in another thread, Welsh was extremely fustrating in the first half of the season.

The brand of football he was playing was pathetic, chip side ways, chip backwards. There was no direction at all.

It was all cheap possies with no run out of him whatsoever.

But credit to him he really made an effort after the mid season break to change that.

Was great to see him just go back to what made him in the first place which was just grabbing the bloody ball and running straight down the middle with it.

B. M.Johnson M.Michael K.Bradley
HB. A.Welsh D.Fletcher A.McPhee
C. N.Lovett-Murray J.Watson S.Camporeale
HF. A.Monfries S.Lucas M.McVeigh
F. A.Lovett M.Lloyd J.Hird
Foll. D.Hille J.Johnson B.Stanton
Int. J.Laycock C.Johns J.Winderlich R.Cole

We are developing a pretty good side I think. If Bradley is in our long term plans to be a kp back then he has got to start in the backline, learning from two of the best and getting the third best tall instead of a Richo or Hall. If they have him pegged as a tall utility then swap Bradley with either Lee or Gumbleton. I hope we aim to have a settled back six- injuries being kind. I personally prefer MJ as a backpocket and McPhee as an attacking flanker.
The midfield worries me most in our side. NLM has speed, height and can break lines but does turn the ball over and takes questionable options with his disposal. Watson is strong at clearances and has good hands and vision. He needs to hurt the oppostion with his kicking to be more dangerous and I would like him to be physically stronger in contests. Camporeale is not my sort of player but he is a good outside player who uses the ball well. I hope Nash or Dyson has a strong start to the season and overtakes Camporeale though Dyson will have to improve his disposal and workrate to do so and Nash will have to get more of the ball for Bendigo. JJ and Stanton are both hard runners who are adept at getting the footy. However their dispoal by foot can hurt us which is not great when they are among our leading disposal winners. I have Monfries, Lovett, Winderlich and Cole running through the midfield. I expect Monfries to eventually replace JJ, Lovett to use his damaging speed- hopefully his body and mind are in a muh better space, Winderlich has speed and penetrating disposal. I thought he was on the verge of making it last year before he was injury hit. Lastly, Richard Cole! We gave up an early second round to secure him and it is time he delivered. I watched him at u/18 level for Eastern rotate through the midfield pretty well. He can be very strong at the contest and break lines. If he lets himself get to three figures in weight again he needs to be shown the door immediately. If he is good shape I reckon we need to show some faith in him and rotate him through the midfield.
Lloyd, Lucas, Hird and at different times Johns and Laycock makes up for a dangerous forward line. I personally hope that Hird plays a roaming forward role and is mainly kept out of the midfield. Johns could be extremely dangerous playing on the fourth best defender. I expect to see Ryder in the forward line at different times. Davey, Houli, Dempsey and Jetta are all candidates to play as a small forward but I would like to see McVeigh given first opportunity in this role. He is fast, defensively minded, talented in the air for his size and a good kick.
My hope for 2007 is we get games into all our youngsters and avoid playing Bolton, Peverill and Heffernan unless absolutely necessary. Of course injury and form are two things us January experts cant predict.
