Best All-Round Protection Software?

Can anyone recommend a good antivirus/spyware etc program? Norton hasn't been great and don't like Zonealarm. Don't use the computer for online gaming or anything like that - just general usage.

When last I had windows on my home computers, I used the following:

Nod32 anti-virus
Spybot Search and Destroy
AdAware
CCleaner

The last three are free. Nod32 does have a trial version you can use.

I find common sense behaviour plus Windows' own features is good enough. Oh and Malwarebytes to clean up that crap.

AV software is a bit of a racket and the makers are obviously heavily incented to over estimate the need for their software.

Windows inhouse security is NOWHERE NEAR good enough. And what is common sense behaviour? No ever doing online banking or using a credit card over the net? You can't stop an email with a virus entering your system no matter how much "common sense behaviour" you use.

There is no question that the need for AV products and other security is under estimated. If you don't have it you are going to get viruses. Worst case scenario is people can hack into your system very easily (assuming they want to target you).

The only fraud going on is that market leaders Symantec, Trend, and McAfee are crapola inferior products that hog resources. These companies have old technology and don't see a neeed to change because they have the market sewn up. If you buy a computer these days it will most likely already have one these brands installed as part of an OEM deal with the computer manufacturer. It runs out after a few months and the user is prompted to renew. They get a shitload of business this way and this is what keeps them comfortable with an inferior product rather than spending money building a good product.

There's quite a few good AV products out there that are inexpensive and shit on the main brands. The default Windows one is not up to scratch. Not even close actually.

Yes you can. Gmail does it's own attachment checking. I don't download executable files from untrusted sources, I would rarely download any from trusted sources. I know what a script is, what an exe is, what .reg is. You're not talking to someone that takes his computer to Harvey Norman to get my viruses sorted out.

What about surfing the net? What about downloading movies? What if your mate gives you a usb with the latest new release on it and he doesn't know it has a virus.

You limit your freedom a lot by not using a proper AV product.

Seemingly reputable websites have been unwittingly known to host malware.

What about surfing the net and downloading movies??? You don't get viruses from those things, and browsers have built in protections now. IE won't execute anything unless you allow it and non-executable files (e.g. movies) are not going to harm you.

Avast

Mix and match. All free. All do the job.

Personal PC just uses Avast, with MWB as a backup. No problems in many years.

Trend Mico Internet Security is the very best IMO. Never had an issue since getting this a couple of years back. Really reccommend you go get it.

it's rubbish. Talk to any techie and they'll tell you it's rubbish. Particulalrly their latest release. Sloooooow. $70 for a dog.

You are either mistaking it for a different program or you have no idea, I am guessing the latter. I know several people that use it with no issues. It scans my pc each day without interrupting anything that i'm doing, not slow at all and very very good at protecting. I have the latest version you eluded too and it's as quick as all the other copies.
