Royce Hart was CHF TOTC. But I think most consider Carey to be the best.
Here are games played and goals kicked of some I can think of. Thoughts? Was Hart a little overrated?

Carey 272gms 727gls
Kernahan 251gms 738gls
Buddy 300gms 944gls
Richo 282gms 800gls
Dermie 211gms 464gls
Jono Brown 256gms 594gls
Nick Reiwoldt 336gms 718gls
Tredrea 255gms 549gls
Hart only 187gms and 369gls

I'd watch a Hawks game with Dermie, because Dermot ! No duds there.

not suggesting Pav is the best, but he belongs in the list.

353 games 700 goals.

Buddy Or Carey for me.

Riewoldt the best CHF in the last 15 years

Buddy is the best forward I have seen over a long period.

Carey the greatest.

Jono Brown lol.

Carey is the best.
Hart 2nd best,
Franklin 3rd best, just behind Royce.

Then the rest.

The top 10 tall forwards ever in NPO are Hudson, Coleman, Ablett, Lockett, Carey, Dunstall, Franklin, McKenna, Wade, Royce.
a lot of players are close to that list though, but back to CHF, I think the 3 i mentioned are comfortably the best.

How can Carey be the best CHF when he kicked over 200 goals less than Buddy, especially since a CHF's role is to kick goals?
you are narrow minded.
Carey did more than Buddy outside of kicking long goals and celebrating like a flog.
Carey averaged 16.5 disposals a game
Franklin averages 10.95 disposals a game
Carey could kick 10 a game if he wanted but he would also set up many more, along with being a great leader.
I hate Wayne Carey with a passion and think hes the biggest tosser on Earth (behind Kane Cornes) but you cant deny hes the CHF ever.
I do NOT, however, like some, say hes the best ever player

How can Dusty, Dangerfield, Fyfe and Cripps be the best midfielders when they get much less ball than Tom Mitchell, especially since a midfielders role is to get the ball?

I agree with most of your sentiments.

Although for buddy's disposal numbers, you've quoted his kicks per game. Buddy averages 15.5 disposals.

Carey still out in front, but not by a mile.

1883 AA Captain Stephen Michael was selected at CHF. Ken Farmer up forward ?

I remember watching a game back in about 80/81 where TI was rucking against Moss for a while, and then 'rested' himself as ruck-rover (back in the days that was a position) crashing around Blackwell and the Krackours, went forward for a while, took a pack mark and kicked a goal, and finished the quarter at Full Back on Warren Ralph.

The guy was a freak footballer.

Carey also played in an era where it was far easier to kick goals, and yet he kicked 200 fewer than Buddy who has played in a very hard era to kick goals. In fact Carey played in one of the easiest eras to kick huge numbers of goals.

Always a great topic. Splitting hairs between some of the greatest players we've ever seen.
Most difficult job on the ground. Isnt a guy on the list a purist wouldnt pay money to go along to watch from the stands.
Never been fussed about great rovers coz there's always more.

Pav should be on the ilst, but to me the last of the true CHF's is there. The classical mobile marking target who straightens up a team and provides a constant target. Carey the best CHF i've seen. Franklin the most talented all round fwd, but the best true CHF since Carey ive seen is Riewoldt. Everything I want in a mobile marking target. Consistent, resilient, superb wet weather tall which is v rare, good finals player, amazing tank, good leader, fast and a constant presence over an entire half of the field or more. Not as good a kick as a few others but well and truly good enough. They get so many shots from >50 and bad angles compared to more stay home and FF's, their goal kicking numbers arnt as important to me. I'd rather form an opinion on numbers of marks per game for a specialist CHF. Anything >2 goals a game avge for a CHF is fine by me.

The often forgotten part of great CHF's is how many were actually fantastic field kicks as well. Goes unnoticed. Jon Brown, Pav an Riewoldt for starters were always excellent field kicks, usually far better than most of their mids.

Always stood up in grandfinals, has to be in the conversation

:thumbsu: He was true leader imho, I dont claim he was the best ever, pretty academic when you resort to numbers.

Not even a shadow of his former self after he left the Hawks.

This is interesting...

Makes me think Buddy and Roughead in 2008 were pretty impressive. A lot is talked about Buddy 100+ goal season. But he is only gets spot 30 on the goals in one season list while in combination with Roughead makes it at 6.

I'm old fashioned but if you can't mark overhead then you are not going to be a great CHF. Carey and Hart out in front. A bunch including Brown, Kernahan, Loewe, Riewoldt, Brereton, Tredrea sitting just behind.

Interestingly, I think the guy that could have been the greatest ever hardly ever played there. But when Peter Knights played CHF he was scary good.

The bolded is incorrect. Franklin averaged 15.5 disposals a game, a whopping 1 less than Carey and will likely end up scoring 250 more goals than Carey.
You are making it sound like he's Josh ****ing Jenkins. Buddy MO for a lot of his career was pushing up the ground and absolutely killing his man on the way back to goal with unmatched speed and endurance.

Not a shit bloke as well.

Given you didn't mention Buddy, but he is obviously as good or better than many of those named, do you consider Buddy more a general forward, a bit of a unique classification.
