Opinion Best Guesses - what game changes will MM make to how Carlton plays and why?

I think the best part of a new coach is there is now no set play that can be predicted. It sounds as though Mick is focusing on having a versatile team. This means role players with varied capabilities to keep the opposition guessing.

So much effort is put into opposition analysis these days, that you cant get through a whole season without being unpredictable. You always need to be able to one up your opposition. When they set play for blocking your boundary run, you torp it up the middle, and break through the corridor. When they send a loose man to block out that zone, you chip it shorter in the 50, and go wide, or switch it to the opposite side.

Defense will be key, with a focus on creating more scoring opportunities, and making sure that we utilise those opportunities through accurate kicking.

We're the quickest team in the competition so MM will utilise that on the turnover I suspect. The biggest change will be in the physical comittment of the whole team, an area that was rightly questioned last season.

I think Levi and Hampson might be plonked close to goal for the duration as that 'out' kick has been a downfall in the past (these 'go to' men don't need to be guns, just competitive). With Betts and Garlett running onto it we could be very dangerous.

I feel the midfield will be loaded up with our best and we won't be afraid of causing stappages. We may well play the boundary but I think we might run it up the wing as often as possible.

I agree about Mick using our pace.

I think we will play a very counter attacking type of football.

All out defence when we dont have the ball, then long kicks, and using our speed once we win the ball back.

I can see Yarran being used in a Jetta type role. Pushing up the ground a little bit more. Inside mids will feed it out to him and he can break away... no one will be catching him. I expect more goals for Yaz this year and plenty of inside 50s.

I also think we will see a much taller back line than in recent years (provided we can keep our talls on the park *touchwood*)

I'm confident our pace should and will be utilised to advantage. I remember Mick stating sometime during his tenure at Collingwood that his game plan was one built around the types of players he had at his disposal rather than coming in with a plan and just telling the players to go execute.

Sydney proved a yardstick in terms of midfielders defending so hoping we can emulate that side of the game as required and break more games open with guys like Yarran, Garlett, Armfield, Tuohy, Walker, also Joseph, Lucas and Buckley at some point. Even Boots when he's ready for more game time plus Judd still has some tow if he gets to play more outside.

I reckon if we kick higher scores than the opposition I will be able to live with whatever style we are playing.

1. Much taller team. Carlton under Ratten have played a very short team. Defenders often had to take on taller opponents and tall opposition defenders have been allowed to roam free and play unaccountable football and double team. Not so much anymore. Expect less reliance on Jamison and Waite who are injury prone. Expect Watson, Jamison and Henderson to all play together down back and Waite, Casboult and Possibly Hampson or another all up forward. Expect to see Carlton jumpers standing next to shorter opponents rather than the other way around.

2. More rotations through the midfiend and forward line. Not just with the ruckmen but with the flankers and pockets. Too much reliance on individuals under Ratten, hence the inconsistency. Expect players who can play onball and up forward to be favoured. Could see Garlett either spend time on the ball or in other positions. Either way will need to be playing well. Yarran could even be sent back to the forward line at Garlett's expense as a forward who can go into the midfield. Expecting to see more strong body types played through the midfield. The door is open for Robinson, O'Keefe, Touhy, Mclean, Curnow, Bell etc to play bigger roles alongside Judd, Murphy and Carrazzo in the midfield. Buckley and Menzel likely to be highly considered as half forwards who will be looking to spend more and more time in the midfield in the future.

3. Slower more precise tempo/possession footy. Last year we hardly looked to maintain possession of the ball, hardly switched it in the backline and hardly looked for short options and sideways options. 2011 we did these things and did them well but in 2012 we threw these things out the window and bombed poorly executed kicks up the boundary line and attempted to move the ball as fast as we could straight up the ground and this meant that our players behind the ball or in a forward press weren't in position when it was turned over or that we had no one forward of the ball to go to. I expect that we look to move it sideways more, especially in defense and half forward and that we look to move the ball with a good mix of short and long kicks. I expect us to take a little extra time getting the ball into the forward line and allow more time to properly set up the forward press. We failed miserably to implement the forward press last year because the aspects of our game plan to allow us to set it up were done wrong. I expect us to play a better game style when we flood back. Previously when we have flooded back in the past we have tried to move it forward quickly and turned It over too easily. I expect us to be able to play this sort of footy much better but not likely to play it a lot.

4. Team structure will come well before playing the best 22 footballers available. I don't think this ever happened a lot under Ratten. It happened to an extent but Ratten would always pick a decent small/medium sized player rather than play a young tall player or tall player who was not starring in the VFL. If a tall player goes down then I feel that the next tall in line will come in regardless of VFL form or age rather than changing the structure and going with a smaller team and picking a midfielder that is going well in the VFL. This is what we have done in the past. I get the feeling that MM will not share the "not ready for AFL" belief that Ratten did that saw Mitchell play just 1 game in 2011 after kicking a few bags in the VFL and Casboult only debuting this year after being around for years and us having lacked tall forwards for years. This is why we have failed miserably at developing tall forwards, simply because we have never played them and had faith in developing them in the AFL. Like Geelong have had with Tom Hawkins. I expect that there will be a lot more faith in youth and unlike in previous years, we may see a few more young players in key roles such as on the ball and taking the key position roles while the older bodies spend more times on the flanks, pockets and wings.

5. Player management and training. From all reports and from what I am hearing from training with some players appearing to get a week off every now and then is that players who are sore are getting looked after and the players aren't getting flogged as much. Heard the words sports scientists and player workload management mentioned a fair bit in press releases. I get the feeling that these things may have been ignored previously. The conditioning of the players last year was poor. First round of the nab cup i was terrible disappointed to see a bunch of blokes running around who appeared they had not put in the work in the gym and were too undersized and understrengthed and this showed during the main season when our side was smashed for size and strength all over the ground all year. This year the players generally look bigger and stronger. They look like footballers and not long distance runners.

All sounds encouraging Batman:thumbsu:

If I was to simplify things - I'd be happy if Carlton developed a list that could rag doll any team it came against - this "see ball get ball kick goal" stuff is too complicated for an old front rower - I played see bloke smash bloke simple footy.;)

Watson 65 metre bullet from the goal square to Yarran on the half back flank. Yazz has a bounce or two down the wing whilst dancing around his opponents and from 60 metres out puts the Sherrin on Casboults chest 15 metres out and directly in front of goal. Casboult slots home his 6th for the day.

Watson to Kreuzer to Casboult is more direct - chop the little fellas out - they are annoying.:)

We all know his plan is to play wider and hug the boundary line, but apart from that, I reckon he will focus on fast rebounds from turnovers through direct kicking, and running it out of the backline in numbers.
I can see at least 3 players Yazz, 2E and laidler running it out with great pace and nailing targets on the chest.

CARLTON

Blues coach Mick Malthouse's desire for more versatile players, less predictability and a deeper, more diverse midfield to take some pressure off Chris Judd and Marc Murphy is likely to result in key playmakers Bryce Gibbs and Chris Yarran spending more time in the midfield. Even livewire forwards Eddie Betts, Jeff Garlett and Andrew Walker are expected to have bursts on the ball, just as Malthouse did at Collingwood with instinctive types like Leon Davis and Alan Didak. The new Blues mentor has also been implementing his tried-and-true safety-first approach to ball movement: wide from defence before going more direct from wing/half-forward, and only going inboard when the target is well clear.

Footy momentum always ebbs and flows.I still expect us to be able to run rampant when we have the momentum but also to be able to tighten up when momentum swings away. Thats when we play the boundary and slow the play to keep possession ,thus not leaking as many goals. Putting an emphasis on goal kicking accuracy so we actually bear fruit whilst we have opportunities to score is also noted. This added with greater player flexibility for on field rotations and a few more taller players on the park should allow us to have a freaking plan B.Hoooray.

The other thing I think Mick is gonna be big on is "assessing the situation".The whole run and carry looks great when it comes off but if there is a turn over the defensive positioning is a shambles.Having talls helps him.If its a 50/50 running race, kick wider to the talls instead,if they can't mark it push it over the line. The defensive zone is still set up and if your small forwards can also be good inside mids the percentages swing your way.I think this is also why Mick wants to teach the small forwards how to be mids. More options ,more avenues and retaining a press.

18 shots on goal would be something to see...
until the gold coast game, he had a 50% strike rate... so if he has 18 shots on goal, I would expect to see 9 goals :D

And I think that they are really working hard on correcting his kicking issues (ball drop and follow through) so that he is a lot more accurate.
