Which one of these is your favourite hattrick?

These are just the ones i can remember, please specify others if there are better ones.

Dominic Cork got a blinding one against the Windies in 1995, it was either his first or second Test & it was the first by an English bowler for ages.

It really was high drama.

It was better than the Gough one against Australia IMO, I don't think Gough took another wicket in that innings plus we'd already lost the series.

The Cork one was whilst the battle was at it's peak.

Didn't Courtney Walsh get one (against Australia?) that was over 2 innings so nobody noticed it at first?

Glenn McGrath's hattrick I think is the best. He got three top order batsmen. Arguably the three best batsmen in the (admittedly not very strong) eleven.

McGrath was on 298 Test wickets coming into the Test and in the lead up to the Test, in typical McGrath style, he boasted that he'd get Sherwin Campbell for his 299th wicket and Brian Lara - a traditional bunny of his - for the the 300.

Not only did he live up to his promise, he did it in consecutive deliveries and got Windies captain Jimmy Adams out with the very next ball! :D

i knew about cork's hattrick, but never saw it, so i had no idea of the circumstances surrounding it. i'm glad you brought it up. and you are right about courtney walsh, he did get a hattrick in that series. If it was over two innings, well that would be two of them since Hughes' was also over 2 innings (3 different overs actually). For some strange reason i remember the Hughes hattrick well, but cant recall the Walsh one (maybe i wasnt home or they cut to the news  :)

do you remember how he came on the news the night before.. and said "i'd love to get Sherwin Campbell, then claim Lara first ball for my 300th"? (yes, he actually said 1st ball!!!) unbelievable, and if that wasnt enough, to top it off with the Jimmy Adams scalp was magic... then he goes and bowls a bouncer to Sarwan who was ****ting bricks, coming off two pairs so far in the tour (so the double hattrick chance was wasted)

and that day at the WACA for McGrath, there was some stuff up with the ticket collection gates, so there were thousands stranded outside whilst this was all going on... not happy Jan!!

Flemmo's

I was gonna mention Flemmo's...
For the drama of it all it'd have to be McGrath's. The enduring memory of it is MacGill fumbling, then taking the catch to dismiss Lara and McGrath charging at him full steam. If Gilla had dropped it, i half expected McGrath to drop him.

Flemo's hattrick has to be up there. Firstly, it was his test debut.

The first wicket of Aamer Malik for 65 ended a 133 run partnership. The final wicket was Saleem Malik for 237 (in the test after offering Warne and May money to bowl poorly). In between those 2 was Inzamam-ul-Haq.

Apparently the wicket was flat as too.

Chaminda Vaas in the most recent World Cup. May have been against a minnow - but 3 wickets with your 1st 3 balls to get a match started (and in a World Cup) - doesn't get much better than that!

Nobody mentioned the Damien Fleming hattrick vs. Pakistan, that was one of the best.
was that even televised? ive never actually seen it, (and ive bever heard people argue it was the best before... what made it so good?)

tell you what would have been good though... was to watch flemings second hattrick if it wasnt for warne dropping a dolly in the slips on the hattrick ball.

that was pretty good, but i found it hard to get that excited about it. it was sri lanka after all, and IIRC against bangladesh.

I have been to only one match that has involved a hatrick - Anthony Stewart vs Pakistan at the MCG around 1997 I think. That was pretty exciting to watch with the home crowd going wild.

But the best I have seen would probably have to be Vaas' also in the previous World Cup against Bangladesh. 4 wickets in the opening over including 3 with the first 3 balls was very good even if it was only against Bangladesh.

some zimbabwean chicken farmer also claimed a hattrick. i think it was Eddo Brandes. Wasim Akram has two and i heard that hack Mohammad Sami also has one.

Didn't play another game after that.

It was as if that hat trick didn't occour after seing it the next day and in the news i dont even reckon it got a mention certainly the least famous hatrick in the last 20 years.

There was a South african hat trick too not long ago i think Adams or one of those guys who got it.

It seems after a huge lull in hat tircks all of a sudden there becoming more prevalent now god there was porbably half a dozen in the 90's and there have been sh*t loads in just three years are batsmen getting craper or bowlers getting better? also will the trend continue

From the list, Singh, McGrath and Gough are the standouts in terms of quality and signifcance in the matches they were achieved in.

And it's a good point markstaners made about the increasing occurance of hattricks in recent years - when Warne got his in 1994/95 it got enormous coverage in the media and Ch. 9 even filmed a special segment with Warne discussing the hat-trick in significant detail. And all in all, that hattrick wasn't achieved in the most significant of circumstances as the match was more or less over and the batsmen he got out (Defreitas, Gough, Malcolm) were of a low standard.

McGrath's is the best for me - any hattrick that has Lara in it is top-notch and it was the defining period of the Test.

I watched the Merv Hughes hattrick at a mate's place on video the other day. A bit strange really, to span two tests and three overs. It counts as a hat trick of course, but unusual none the less

Now I just can't get it out of my head.

It spanned two innings, not two tests.

Which leads me to my question.

Can a hatrick be taken over different test matches or even test series ????

While you could make the argument, I'm pretty certain hatricks have to be completed within the one match.

Merv's hatrick may not have been the best, but it was certainly my favourite. It really seemed to indicate that the future of Aussie cricket was looking brighter.
