Luke Hodge, 34 possessions and 6 goals vs bulldogs R21 2007

John Platten, 37 possesions and 6 goals vs adelaide R9 1994

Darren Jarman, far too many ti9mes in both hawthorn and adelaide colours

In terms of performances in one quarter;

Lucas's 7 goals in the 4th quarter to bring Essendon back from 50 points down in 07' was a pretty good effort. A pity we were just to shite to pinch the game.

Also Moorcroft's quater in 2001, when he took that amazing mark, he kicked, I think, 4 good goals and took the greatest mark of all time, not bad for a freaking midget.

If you read the context of my post, it was in response to another, and then I said "one of the best performances I've seen in modern times"

Meaning the last 10 years.

There's a difference between "BEST performances of ALL TIME" and "ONE OF THE BEST performances of the LAST TEN YEARS".

Buddy doesn't even come close, especially when you consider Fred Fanning kicked twice as many goals as Buddy's best effort. Or Matthews kicking 2 extra goals and picking up about 30 extra possesions (and many more tackles I presume).

1999 was 9 years ago...
Great... that doesn't what I make make it any less true.

Nor does the total amount of goals make it a greater game based purely on stats.

I said "one of" regardless, and obviously I'm going on games I can remember.

I don't really judge it on stats, because I've seen Hodge have one of his best games with only 17 touches. I'm not going to judge it just on the number of goals someone kicks. Buddy has had pretty average games for 6 goals, but just one more goal against Adelaide in the finals was one of the all time great final performances, I haven't seen too many better. So purely reeling out the number of goals isn't enough, especially considering times have changed and huge bags are very very unlikely anymore. Its rare to get 10.

Buddy's nine goals against Essendon the first time was a special moment, especially when you consider his age, it was a fantastic brilliant performance and one I will remember very fondly of the day he arrived.

I can't remember the 90's nearly as much as this decade, so that is why I commented on it.

Not sure why people get so defensive about Buddy, nothing I said was unreasonable.

What is it with bigfooty and people not being able to read.

I was merely responding to someone who said Buddy hadn't put in an all time memorable performance, and I disagreed with my opinion.

Just like Dermott's 6 goals on debut is highly remember, Buddy's 7 goals in his first final against Adelaide will be something that will be remembered for a long long time.

I never ever stated he has had the best performance of all time.

That's crap.... A defender can't even touch a forward these days without a free kick given against him.

In the 90's forwards got no protection from the umpires, now these days because forwards haven't been kicking 100+ goals, the rules commitee are giving them an arm ride.
come on, that is pretty small minded.

It goes both ways, a forward can't touch a defender either.

no hands in the back, which dunstall and locket were kings of.

surely you saw in the grand final buddy and roughead's slight tough that got frees again, no way that would have been called years ago.

zone defences, means teams will attempt to double and triple team players.

flooding etc, its much different.

people don't kick long to contests anymore because of it, there are barely a few contested marks per forward a game, compared to 7 or 8 back in the day.

Its completely different now.

Gaz Junior's game against the Roos at the Dome this year was pretty impressive. First time I've heard of a coach telling his team not to tackle an opposition player.

Ablett's last quarter against the Swans in round 5 was pretty special too. Kicked 3 goals and had about 14-15 possessions, helping turn what was a close game for three quarters into a comfortable 7 goal win.

kouta in 99 P/Final.. ask the essendon supporters :p

x10000 for that!! I was sitting next to 3 of them in the MCC members that day and i will never forget in the last qtr them all saying DONT KICK IT NEXT TO KOUTA HES GETTING EVERYTHING!!!!

Was a memorable day :):):thumbsu::thumbsu:

Actually remember the stats from this game as Matthews was my favourite player. He had 38 kicks, 12 marks, 8 handballs and kicked 11 goals. Marks were not simple uncontested ones in those days which make it even more remarkable

I would rate the Matthews game and the Williams game as the two best individual performances.

So memorable in fact that you can't even get it right. Try again.

Some performances stand out for mine, like Carey annihilating Melbourne under lights in 1996, Lockett's sixteen goals against the Roys in '95, or maybe his 15 goals and 18 marks against Sydney in 1992 was a better performance by him. And, of course, Dunstall's 17-goal effort against Richmond back in '92.

I was looking through the archives and found this performance by Greg Williams against St. Kilda in 1989.

25 kicks, 28 handballs, 5 marks, 6 goals. A stunning 53-possession game with a lazy six goals to go with it.
