Best of the Prelim Final losers

Refusal to adapt for specific opposition. Religiously adhering to ‘your way’ throughout the H&A racks up the wins. But you need another lever to win 3 in a row against the best playing and coaching groups. We’ve not changed one iota since the heady days of Saint Neil.

Our Sando spoke year was the worst for us. Less than a goal against Hawks.

Crows had a good year but were also mega fortunate to play GC & GWS twice each that season. Massive leg up considering both teams were brand new & the ladder ended up mega tight.

In terms of the actual results of the prelims sure, but I took this thread as being about which teams were the best to get knocked out in the prelims?....maybe I misunderstood the assignment

But port of 2002-03 was a very good team (back 2 back minor premierships) they were just chokers

That Power team losing the 02 & 03 qualifying finals was mind boggling. That side was easily equal if not slightly better than the Lions. 03 Power not making GF biggest of all AFL chokes.

I tipped both Pies and Swana thos years. And knew they'd lose both prelims. I thought they were overrated. I was wrong in 2004 however. Thought Lions would roll them.

Good tip in 02 considering Power finished 18 wins & Pies 13. The game during the year was epic & under a goal too so you knew they could box with them. Without Buckley, that definitely was a a Power shock. That game mentally cracked them for 03 aswell.

Remember the 'Eddie's a w***er!' Power v Pies clash in 03? Gold because he was covering the game & could hear the crowd.

Port had no chance of stopping Benny Kinnear. Scrubs

Saints 04

Port 2014

GWS 2016
Yeah Giants in 2016 is a good one.

I remember them absolutely monstering the Swans in the QF with Mummy crushing everything in his path like an actual giant from Jack and the Beanstalk.

Thought they were about to win 5 flags in a row, had prepared my ‘ I for one welcome our new Giant overlords’ speech and everything.

But then the Bulldogs came along…

Dockers? They would have lost to Sydney in week 1 if swans had their full team. 5 players including buddy didn't play. Not to mention bad kicking. Freo in 2015 were one of the worst sides to top the ladder. Percentage was woeful.
Agreed.... I am willing to admit this too.

Dockers in 2015 was scarily similar to Geelong in 2019. Very good 1st half of the season.

Dockers in 2015 were 9-0 ended up top ,with 17 wins and 5 losses. Dockers were struggling in the 2nd half of the season and were barely hanging on with some games late in the season. Suspension and injuries hurt.

Geelong in 2019 were 9-0 or 10-0. Ended up top 2 with 16 wins and ,6 losses. Their last 12 games of the regular season was win, loss , win, loss, win , loss etc.

Freo 2015 and Geelong 2013
As much as I love the dockers. I disagree.

Dockers of 2015 was similar to cats of 2019. Both sides started well.

Dockers were 9-0 in 2015, cats in 2019 were 10-0 .

Both struggled and limped in the 2nd half of the season.

I know they didn't make a preliminary final. Demon's won the flag in 2021. The started the 2022 season 9-0 or 10-0. Then limped and struggled in the 2nd half of the season and went out in straight sets

I wasn't aware Geelong were like that in 2019. Also you guys were 8-0 I believe veofre Richmond beat yiu. 8 goals to 3 in the 1st term I believe.

Yeah I agree. By the time of the prelim, Dockers seemed to be a shell of the side they were earlier. Just really unfortunate with the timing of their form and injuries that season.

Hawks had to play well to win the PF and the game was still in the balance early in the last, but with Fyfe essentially playing with a broken leg (I was wincing just watching), the result never seemed in too much doubt.

The biggest factor of that game was the goal kicking or set shots on goal.

That preliminary final hawks kicked 15.4.94 to 10.7.67. hawks didn't spray one shot that night. Yes all 4 points were rushed

Similar reasons with the 2013 grand final where hawks won 11.11.77 to dockers 8.14.62

This is a lie.

Choco blamed Mead or some other player getting injured for the QF loss of 2002, and for 2003, Brent Guerra and I think maybe some of the other Port players got wasted drunk before finals and it destroyed their finals campaign. That's why Guerra was traded after that finals series to St Kilda.

Kinda like saying Adelaide 2025 was a very good team, even though they choked in finals. Port 2014 were the best prelim losers for the club, and 2020 was better than 02/03, too.

Well not really

Adelaide 2025 was a one season team (so far) and didn't win a final

Port in 2002-03 finished top over two seasons, won more games in both years than the crows did this year and won a final in both years and then a year later would go on to win the flag.

So actually it's quite different

Aswell as coming 3rd with 16 wins in 2001 (choking for the first time in the semi v hawks)

I was surprised in 2004 with Port. I thought they were chokers and would choke forever. Neil Daniher tipped them. A lady I know wanted to put 3k on Port 39+ and me and her husband told her not to as that's crazy Port would get smashed. She must have been spewing after the game. Won by 40, probably would have paid at least 8-1 if not more. No lower than 6 I reckon. Saw her the next year, her and her husband looked miserable. I reckon she lost a lot of money chasing those lost dollars.

Would be considered the greatest club in Australia if they didn't choke so hard & have had at least 3 AFL flags by now. Instead i'd call them the biggest choker club in the AFL era.

I think it was Sutcliffe who committed a vital turnover in the defensive 50 which killed off freos hopes and momentum in that prelim.

Yep, Sutcliffe some how slipped, Cyril swept it up then kicked a goal then the game was sadly done

I think you mean Tom Sheridan.

This one?

Tommy talks about it candidly now and has a laugh about it, makes him a good bloke.

Tom Sheridan wasn't great, but he wasn't terrible either. At best a back flanker or forward flanker or winger.

He was always rotated around those spots
