The best in my era

Bombers 99

North 1994 unlucky kicked themselves out if it I think Carey kicked 6.6.

Tigers 2018 stiff losing just 4 home and away games. Smashed in the prelim though.

GWS 2016 so close

Hawks 2011 should have beaten us. Likewise GWS 2023 perhaps.

Geelong 2024 they blew that game

Bombers 1996 lost by a point as they did in the qualifier. Stiff.

Crows 93 lost too many home and away games. 12.12 to 6.6 at half time vs bombers. They blew that but made up for it in 98.

Dogs 97 also blew it.

Dogs from 08-10 were a very good side that happened to have to contend with 2 great sides every year.

They had the Cats 07-11, Pies 10-11, St Kilda 09-10 and to add more pain had Hawks 08 who then became a 3preat side.

Yep their best was in 09 I was going to put them there. I just don't think they could have beaten Geelong in the big one but should have beaten saints. They deserve to be there.

1 pt loss and win over Geelong in home and away season. 25 pt or so loss in the qualifier.

Crowbots era of 05-06

Ran into the Eagles both years who just matched up better on them. They had the wood over the Swans in that time so in an alternate universe they make it through to the grand final.

Was going to put them. Couldn't bring myself to do it. Lost to saints amd eagles 05 finals and eagles in 2006 close game. Worthy, I just found others slightly better.

Maybe I'm biased. 06 lost to tigers a week after they conceded 30 goals to sydbey lol. 82 pt thumping at subi too.

They finished top of the ladder in 05 and second in 06 though

Neil Craig had them as a well oiled machine who just couldn't take that final step.

Sounds similar to the modern day crows tbh 🤔

Yeah I know. Beat yiu guys at subi last game of the year to get top in 05. 2 games clear in 06 before you smashed them. Trent Hentshel was good those years before doing his knee.

Port Adelaide 2002 & 2003
Rubbish teams. Nowhere near it. 2 finals losses in 2002 and smashed by us in 2003 prelim also their second loss of the campaign.

2001, 2002, 2003 they were known as chokers for a reason. 2 wins in 8 games. Twice topping the ladder in the years you mentioned.

In terms of the actual results of the prelims sure, but I took this thread as being about which teams were the best to get knocked out in the prelims?....maybe I misunderstood the assignment

But port of 2002-03 was a very good team (back 2 back minor premierships) they were just chokers

Freo 2015 and Geelong 2013
Dockers? They would have lost to Sydney in week 1 if swans had their full team. 5 players including buddy didn't play. Not to mention bad kicking. Freo in 2015 were one of the worst sides to top the ladder. Percentage was woeful.

Yep, from round 10 onward that year they were 6-7th kind of team.

Freo rested everyone in the last week of the season which whacked their percentage down 10. (That was the final straw for the AFL to bring in the pre finals bye). They were still 17-5 despite throwing away that last game

Who did they lose to? Sure you're not getting mixed up with 2013 and the Saints? In any case Freo weren't that good. Even if their percentage did drop 10 percent. It's the worst in the history of the AFL.

Refusal to adapt for specific opposition. Religiously adhering to ‘your way’ throughout the H&A racks up the wins. But you need another lever to win 3 in a row against the best playing and coaching groups. We’ve not changed one iota since the heady days of Saint Neil.

Our Sando spoke year was the worst for us. Less than a goal against Hawks.

C’wood 1973 - Finished 2 games clear on top of the ladder with 19 wins.

Carlton 1976 - Finished on top of the ladder after a late season winning streak of 9 games.

Hawthorn 1977 - Hudson returned that season and the hawks home & away performance was better than their 1976 premiership season.

North Melb 1979 - Great side with lots of finals experience under Barassi. Recruited Gary Dempsey from Footscray. Main threat to Carlton during the season.

Ess 1999 - Finished on top of the ladder. Shock Prelim final loss after winning their previous 8 games.

Geel 2013 - Players with finals and premiership experience finished second on the ladder with an 18-4 record.

Rich 2018 - Finished on top with an 18-4 record in the middle of their dynasty. Smashed in Prelim but unexpected loss.

Amazing that the hawks went 3 straight years in prelims winning by under a goal. 12-14.
