There is no doubt this has been a sore spot in out side for many years. Who do you think our best option is for 2006 and beyond?

Its easier saying whose not the best option:

Gardiner
Lynch
Matera

Maybe Hunter can do the job that williams does at the hawks as long as eagles dont congest the foward line with heaps of talls

Brad Smith from the ones on that list

I know Freo fans will have a go at me but out of curiosity could Q Lynch be turned into a full back?

IF and I mean IF Brad Smith comes back from knee reconstruction ok then there is no reason why he couldn't go as far as coleman medalist with our midfield feeding him. In the end after he has marked it and is lining up for goal, its the same difficulty to kick a goal in the WAFL or AFL. And Smitty is deadly with his accuracy. He kicked around 200 goals in the WAFL and will have the ball stuffed down his throat by the WCE midfield a hell of a lot more than from he did from his WAFL midfield buddies.

If his knee is stuffed then either Gaspar who is very good over head or Hunter (and then Gaspar will have to play CHB)

Are you serious?

Do you not take into account the huge jump in tempo at AFL level, the increase in quality of defenders, the pressure applied continuously. You're virtually saying a good WAFL/VFL/SANFL forward will be even better in the AFL because of better supply.

WTF?? Ever heard of Daniel Schell? Adam Richardson? Darren Bradshaw?

Daniel Schell - iS SOFT player

Adam Richardson - Not very dedicated

Darren Bradshaw - is out and out hack

Brad Smith - potential Afl player - not soft , very dedicated, not a hack..
time will tell

Here is a little something I wrote on the 'Brad smith' Thread in case you haven't seen that.

Smith was apparently set to be an absolute gun at AFL level when he was 18. He subsequently caught Hepatitis A and Glandular fever at the same time! It took him nearly 2 years just to get over it. He then slowly got his fitness and form back over the next couple years. Then he kicked 200 or so goals over two years in the WAFL proving his potential. I really believed he was going to be an absolute animal this year but did his knee instead. He was 101kg at the start of the year, but has used this year off as if it were 4 preseasons in a row and now is 105kg of pure muscle and not a hint of fat. If his knee holds up next year, he will be the new monster of the AFL.

Now that being said, yes I agree he will be up against much better defenders, but his supply will be coming from the BEST inside 50 midfield in the AFL instead from an average WAFL midfield (where he was still able to kick 200 goals in 2 years).

The question is does he lead down the ground or wide?

After an off-season of specialist forward coaching (as Woosha has apparently suggested), I'd back Lynch out of those guys. I like the way Hunter is currently being used, playing both forward and back. Get back to me on Smith when he's actually played a game of AFL.

anyone got any actual pics of brad smith in action?

I think he sounds tho hes got the goods, so why didnt any other teams pick him up while he was at subiaco?

being able to mark without any pressure is something you learn in aus kick lynch is just a dud.

Plus he can train as hard as he wants but he will never grow a footy brain

No, I haven't, but I've seen this story several times before.

Big, strong FF dominates in second-rate competition and people think they can do the same in AFL. It just doesn't work like that.

I'm not saying he will not make it, but to suggest the step up from WAFL to AFL will help, rather than hinder his ability, is just plain laughable.

I have asked myself that same question and the only answer is that the eagles scouts and selection boys are the best in the business. WCE are constantly picking up blokes that all the other teams fail to recognise. Look at Judd at pick #3, Cox and Fletcher (two all Australians) from the rookie list! Seaby at pick 37 I think (and his skills are better than Cox and Gardiner's at his age) and it goes on and on. Other sides must look at WC and think, 'how do these guys keep picking these ugly ducklings that turn into beauties?'

We need a real quality forward, and unfortunately for us we do not have one on the list at the moment.

Preferably he would be a tall leading player, thus allowing the likes of Gardiner and the resting ruckman to permanently stay in the goalsquare.

We might have a couple with potential, but as I said, we need one now.

Fevola, Tarrant, even somebody like a Mark Williams would improve us quite considerably.

I voted for Smith pretty much because everyone else has had there chance and not taken it. Barring Hunter of course as he has mainly played back. Smith was drafted for a reason and we will see next year if he has the talent to make an impact.

If Smith doesnt work, give Hunter and extended run at FF. He just seems to have a knack for kicking goals, taking strong marks and leading at the right times and to the right spots.

No doubt Brad Smith is talented and accurate but he is coming off a knee reconstruction, and never played a game of AFL before. I wouldn't be expecting to much from him, I would be bringing in a FF from another club because chances are he wont work.

The obvious question therefore is 'Why, if the eagles scouts and selection boys are the best in business, didn't they pick him up two years ago?'
At least one AFL Club had a close look at him several years ago by having him join them for a pre season, unfortunately the Coach at the time didn't rate him. That Coach has since gone and the one who took over won a Premiership despite the President of the Club not wanting him!

Lynch is a defender, the experiment to turn him into a FF has failed and was probably only tried out of necessity, I seriously doubt that you'll see him in that role ever again.
