$50K? Pfft. As if it costs that much to leave. Virgin Blue have one way flights to Melbourne for around $200, if you can't even afford that, then I'll consider passing the hat around. Heck, that really is a worthy cause we can all contribute to.

No one is 'trapped', you are where you want to be.

You Insulting S*it. How dare you toss us in with those infidels.

NSW is a second rate State (still it's second best in Oz) with a second rate Education, Public Transport, Hospital, Road... and Bush fire infrastructure. It's over populated on the coast (mostly by uneducated inbeciles), and west of the Dividing Range it's flat and lifeless and too difficult to get to because the roads are in too much disrepair. And when ou ge there... well you thought the City folk were dumb. As a tourism destination, it's better than Victoria, but no where near as good as Canberra. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 5 or the top 10 Tourism sites in Australia (Parliamnet House, The War Memorial, Australian Museum, National Gallery and National Science and Technology Centre) are located in Canberra, which suggest more people go for their holidays in Canberra than anywhere else.

Canberra is the only place to live. It has the highest standard of living in the country and pretty close, if not, the best in the world. The climate is excellent for about 10-11 months (it gets a little cold in July-August) of the year and unlike the other Capital Cities in the country, the air is breathable. And if you are willing to learn something while have fun, you'll never get bored.

how ironic that you think that uneducated imbeciles populate the coast when you conclude that since the 5 most popular tourist sites are in the ACT, then most tourists go there. HA!! maybe coz 100% of tourists who visit canberra go there, its the ONLY thing to do. every other state has so much variety. i implore you (better check dictionary.com for that one) to check the ABS website.

you think NSW has poor bushfire infrastructure?? pretty hypocritical seeing what canberra has just beeen through. do you think anyone who could afford to live elsewhere or was not in the public service would choose Canberra as their residence?? HA!

climate excellent for 11 months, yeah right.

NEW YORK
PARIS
ROME
LONDON
Canberra

hahahaha

I voted for Victoria before I saw the "Don't vote for your own state." message. Otherwise I would vote for SA. Apart from the lunatics that live there Adelaide is a beautiful city and Victor Harbour is one of the most beautiful places that I have been to and I have been to twenty seven countries so that's saying a lot.

The Bushfires began in the Snowy Mountains, which if you check your Atlas are in NSW. The NSW bushfire service were either slow to react or did nothing at all, and 10 days later... Well I'm guessing you know what happened.

I don't remember saying more people go to Canberra for holidays, but it is a very popular tourist destination, even if those figure don't suggest it. The War Memorial averages between 1.2million and 1.5 million visitors annually, and during Floriade, hotel/motel occupancy rates in Canberra and Queanbeyan increase by around 15 to 20%.
Two things you need to remember are a lot of Canberra's tourist attractions are free (Parliament House, Floriade and the War Memorial is for most of the year-I think) and a lot of people who spend the weekends in Canberra, either spend it with family or stay in Queanbeyan (which is in NSW) where hotel/motel prices are cheaper. We have a three-storey, seven bedroom house, so whenever relatives come to Canberra they always stay with us.

I know that your not meant to vote for your state but Ive only been to Victoria and NSW.
Anyway, SA has a bit of everything. You have the outback up north and then you can go south down to great spots as Victor Harbour, Kangaroo Island etc.
It has afl AND sanfl. Cant ask for more footy wise.
Then you have Adelaide which is easy to get around in and doesnt take forever to travel from one side of our suburbs to the other. Plus the weather here is pretty much perfect. Doesnt have the coldness of Melbourne or the warmth of somewhere like WA or QLD.

ROFLMAO. You don't do much driving do you? Adelaide has the crappiest road system in Australia. A huge opportunity was lost when the government of the day didn't have a major freeway system built through the metropolitan area 30-40 years ago. Seriously I found LA easier to drive in. Add into that the agressive morons that inhabit Adelaide roads and you've got a peak hour nightmare. You can't een have the refuge of public transport, it's a shocker.

Perth weather reminds me of Adelaides. Don't comment on something you know nothing of, you've already admitted you've never been to these places.

What I meant was that it doesnt take long to go from one end of the city to the other, compared to places like Melbourne.
As for the weather, Perth's weather is warmer than Adelaides and Melbournes is colder so I love it. Thats what I meant by that comment.

I find these discussions very funny. The majority of people blindy say their home state (even though the question asked you not to name your home state). I guess people like where they live otherwise they wouldn't be there.

Anyway, now to my thoughts.

I am from SA but voted for NSW. I have been to each of the 5 mainland states aswell as Canberra.

I do like SA but is does have major faults. As someone pointed out the traffic system in Adelaide is terrible, even though the number of cars on the road is low compared to other places. Travelling times are relatively low and it is easy to get around, but not as easy as it should/could be. Also Adelaides public transport is poor compared to Sydney and Melbourne. On the plus side you can drive into the city and park all day for under $10, or even under $5 if you are prepared to walk a bit. Parking in Sydney is crazy. Adelaide has pretty good weather and I like having the distinct seasons where we get a hot summer and a cold winter, but not too cold. SA has cold sea currents which make swimming cold pretty much all year round. That's where I love NSW and QLD's beaches.

Overall Adelaide city is smallish and not as good as most city centres but does have nice older buildings. Where Adelaide city falls behind is in the newer developments.

The suburbs is where Adelaide excels over most other cities in my opinion. Everywhere has good and bad suburbs but the solidly built homes and lower population density of Adelaide along with the cheapest housing of any capital city make it very appealing. A middle Australian could afford a significantly better home in Adelaide than other places.

Geographically Adelaide is well placed. Halfway between hills and the beach (20 mins drive to either). Apart from Melbourne Adelaide beaches are probably the worst.

NSW - great weather, great beaches, Sydney is the nicest and biggest city in Australia but NSW has a great selection of smaller towns and cities to choose from. And it is very central. Only downside for me is the cost of living. If it wasn't for not wanting to leave my friends I would move there tomorrow.

QLD - great weather, some great beaches. Good sized city (Brisbane) and has some good tourist spots and also good smaller areas like Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. Don't like the housing in much of Brisbane.

VIC - Melbourne is good but not great. It's advantage is it's big size, good shopping and good entertainment. The suburbs of Melbourne are my least favourite of any of the capital cities. I personally don't like Melbourne's weather as much as other cities. It genuinely does seem colder and to rain more.

WA - Personally I don't like Perth. Similar to Adelaide in many ways but I can't like it even though I try. Too far away from the rest of Australia. I love to drive from Adelaide to Victoria and NSW. You can't convenently do that from WA.
