There was a greek restuarant near Crazy Horse on Hindley St that had the best when I was a young 'un ... they're not there now :(

Over here in country NSW they have no idea .... shave the meat off the spit, dont heat the bread on the grill, dont use thick pita-just some thin flat lebo bread, fill it with minimal salad (plus you can add olives, cheese, mushrooms etc for extra $ wtf?) and various sauce choices then stick it in a flat sandwich press to heat/toast the bread and its not wrapped up tight so it falls apart when eating it ... they call it a kebab ... I need a proper yiros!

Was that the Barbecue Inn with the lovely Chantal Contouri? (aka the No 96 Pantyhose Strangler ... nivek should be old enough to know what I mean :p)

The Grecian BBQ used to operate between Morphett Street and the Royal Oak Hotal back in the 80's. That was pretty damn good.

I generally eat falafel rolls and Adelaide falafel rolls are generally shit. They all seem to microwave the pre-made falafel balls rather than make them fresh and then deep fry them. There was one exception to this some years ago called Mafti Foods down near the QEH. They were ****ing amazing but only lasted about a year before packing up and moving to Punchbowl in Sydney.

You know for certain if you've eaten a good falafel when you next exit the lavatory.

BBQ inn was further down I think, between morphett and west tce. The place I was recalling was east of Morphett st...Mediterranean BBQ or similar name? ... and yes, FF - I do remember #96 :thumbsu:

Forza - been eating AB's from the Blue & White and the Burger Bar (formerley Red & White) on O'Connell for over 20 years !!!
Back in the day they weren't listed on the menu board so it felt like you were part of a secret club
Making me hungry just thinking about one

http://www.gourmantic.com/2011/01/24/the-ab-at-blue-white-cafe-north-adelaide/

Check out the details here !!

The Blue and White Cafe and to a lesser extent the Burger Bar - which we used to call Boss Brothers because the twin brothers and their old man called everybody boss - were my hangout for a great yiros when I was at uni in the 1980's and up to the early 1990's when I played footy for Adelaide Uni.

When I went to Sydney I couldn't find a Yiros as they were Kebabs mainly cooked up by Turk and Arab Aussies. Used to come back to Adelaide and go to the Blue and White Cafe for my fix. Kebabs and Yiros' are similar, but different enough. But over the years I found good Kebabs in Sydney and stopped making my visit to the Blue and White Cafe.

Went in late last year, for the first time after 6 or 7 years, the bloke that used to serve me almost 30 years ago was still running it with his family, had a good long chat and had another great Yiros.

Cheers all, I was in SA last November and visited the once-great Falafel House on Hindley for a lunchtime yiros, it was ordinary. I thought it was maybe a one-off, or that my memory was starting to wilt and I picked the wrong joint.

Anyway I'll be up for a late night greek meat-fest with garlic on saturday night, but it sounds like I need to give one of those AB's a go. I'm surprised I never thought of inventing them myself.

ps any of you adelaidians keen on having a drink this weekend, you better buy your beer before saturday afternoon. You are at risk of running out after that. It'll start at Alberton oval and expand in a circular arc after that.

The Mt. Barker family medical practice mens have never recovered.

I generally eat either at the Falafal house, who also do AB's if anyone is keen, they just call them Meltdowns, or at a Yiros shop on Bank St off Hindley. I think it's called Yiros Kitchen? Might struggle to get a late night feed there though as I'm pretty sure they're only open for lunch.

There seems to be some differation between what is yiros and what is not.

Some users are saying that kebab in Sydney aren't as good as yiros in Adelaide. (it should be GYROS by the way). But that is understandable, because they are different. One is solid meat the other is ground meat. On the eastern seaboard it's all kebabs, probably due to the Turkish/middle Easternern population. In Adelaide its all yiros Greek influance.

Having travelled through the countries where these foods come from I can only say the best variation is one called SHAWARMA. Love it, If done properly of course.

Ground meat? hmmm, explains a lot as to its texture (even tho its on that vertical spit cooker).

YEEROS is now being advertised over here

Yianni's is great. The only one I've been to is the Hindley one, but I think there's one in Port Adelaide on Commercial Rd too.

(Yiros House) is very ordinary

Agreed. Went there once, won't go again.

Oh BTW guys, cheers for the heads up. Chewed my way thru an AB from the red and white cafe. Sensational feed.

Adelaide was good for a feed all round, Thursday night at the Port Club, Friday Night at the Empire Cafe in Two Wells, Saturday Night at The Prince, and Monday Night at the Port Pizza Bar restaurant for a feed of ribs. Pity nobody has learnt to drive down there still.

Hey Jabsy. Just wondering. I have been over in WA quite a bit and never noticed it, but a friend from over there recently said its hard to find a schnitzel over there. Is this true.

In SA? I think I had one at the Port Club. I know the Prince sells em.

In NT? You can get em anywhere. Quality and size varies tho.

In WA? Haven't been there for about 5 years. Did manage a fine Pizza and a magic goat curry from when I stayed around the corner from Subiaco Oval for a work thing. What is the thing with the WA locals? The ones we met (all good folks) just shitbagged WA as a terrible place to live. I thought it was a great place.

Every time I drive past the place is shut and ever since this thread popped up I've wanted to try one

Proper kebabs finally over here...Spartans in Cobra St Dubbo...hooray!

I had one fantastic one on Rundle Street somewhere .. they did wonders with the softness of the meat and the seasoning, plus they put chips in it with mustard which is just how they do it in Greece :)

Probably not the best going around but I quite enjoy a yiros from Doras Yiros on Findon Rd or one from Hallas fish and chip shop on Grange Rd.

Yeah used to work at the QEH, Doras is ok, but Kostas which was there before it was legendary. Kostas dad started the first yiros shop in Adelaide waaaaay back when. I used to drive from Klemzig on the weekends to get them. He moved a few years ago then sold the business... I can't find a yiros that compares to one from the old Kostas and haven't really been eating them since he sold up. :(
