I've been trawling over draft records since adam was a boy and tossed and turned over this one and it call comes to a fine point. Don't waste a 1R pick on a ruckman.

what have Cox, sandilands, simmo , charman all got in common ...Bloody rookie list picks. In fact the only ruckman picked with early selections in recent memory have been Fraser and Ottens, although not the worst players going around, would be interested to know who else went around their pick.

I realise drafting is not an exact science and knowing us we will overlook this Kleuzer fella and he will turn out to be the modern day polly farmer...Just BEWARE I say...classy midfielder is safer bet

Matt is the same size as Simmonds and from what I have read is playing more key forward than ruck. If he is a big lump of a lad like Hawkins then I would be happy to take him at 1. If he was to develop into a ruckman at a later stage then it would be a bonus.

Neither Charman or Simmonds were rookies.

I think you've got to take Kruezer. By all reports he is the best player available, plus you really need quality young rucks. Would be mad not to take him.

correct on all three. simmonds was originally taken pick 9 in the 1999 psd.
charman was a zone selection in 2000 pick 29 overall.
and yes we desperately need a young ruckman i would go further and say we need at least 2. and maybe a rookie as well.

some ruckmen who have not been taken late. meeson 8. biglands 36.tippett 32. maric 40.griffen rookie. hudson 58. ive mentioned adelaide players first and all their ruckmen because they have 6 genuine ruckmen at various stages of development, and geez they have needed every single one due to injuries.
how many genuine ruckmen do we have the last time i counted it was two. rfc are reluctant to grow their own big men it seems its easy to draft someone elses inferior cast offs.
what adelaide will now do is trade one of their ruckmen for a early draft pick at this stage it will probably be meeson.

do i need to go on. its clear most clubs are quite prepared to use early to mid range picks on ruckmen the clubs ive started on anyway. and remember these are just early to mid range picks most clubs also have rookie ruckmen as well as late picks.

has anyone wondered why we havent produced a quality ruckman of our own for decades. well the answer is simple we just dont invest enough in them.either with quality picks or quantity. surely if you arent going to use earlyish picks on ruckmen you are going to turn over 4 or 5 each yr with late and rookie picks unti tou find some decent ones. we do neither.

one other point i d like to make is it seems other clubs also have plenty of big bodied players above 195cm these players often help out in the ruck ie rocca at collingwood.

at rfc we have simmo 9 psd. knobel rookie. the only other players above 195cm that we have is hall at 196 and pattison 197. this problem has been there for awhile and it just shows how shocking our list management has been and continues to be.

Ruckman are a major priority for the tigers, unfortunately it is also a priority for a number of other clubs.

Ideally Richmond delist Knobel and Graham and pick up Kruezer, another rookie and 2 in the PSD and trading period.

as much as ottens is a weak money hungry piece of poo people forget how good he was in 2001, no injuries and some extra balls he wouldve been a very good player but still he's already done more than fiora ever will

cox and sandilands examples are getting tired, freo and the eagles have full rookie lists with cash to burn so they are bound to get some quality through rookies

brisbane didnt need another ruckman but with luenberger available they had to take him like we have to take kruezer

A good ruckman is a key to a sides structure therefore I don't see any problem using up an early pick for it.

I think you can get by with a good (not great) ruckman, whereas I think you can't win it without a gun onballer.

If this kid is shit hot then go for it, but Fraser has not been as great #1 pick IMHO. From what they say there will be lots of good ruckmen this year. We may be able to get a good one with our second pick.

No beware Kleuzer is a good player and we must take him as number 1 pick. Not only is he good in the ruck he is good around the goals as well.

1.75 goals per game
19.6 disposal per game (approx 14 kicks, 5 handballs, kicking efficiency = 77%) He is also averaging 25 disposals a match in his last 3 games.
5 tackles per game
29 hitouts per game
5 marks (2.4 contested)
