Bias between state player

I find it rediculas that people on here are arguing over having to many NSW players in the test team. Do you honestly care where a player comes from if there up to test standards? Some people even suggesting Khwaja shouldn't come into the test team just because his from NSW is amazing.

Do you also think it's ridicules?

I think pick the best team for the match whether it's 11 vics, 11 NSW etc
I consider myself an Australian before a Victorian, and I honestly couldn't care less what state a player comes from, and neither should the selectors

Agree, I find it bewildering. Almost made a thread on it. Having a soft-spot for players of your own state is fine, I do, most people do, but the interstate bitching, especially about NSW players in the team, is ****ing ridiculous.

Hughes wasn't selected because he's from NSW. He was selected because he put together three fantastic seasons of FC cricket, tore apart the Saffers in his first Test series, and there wasn't a single other opener pushing their case. Might disagree with his selection, but you can see where the selectors are coming from.

Smith wasn't selected because he's from NSW. He was selected because he was the best batsman in Shield cricket last year, and he's also a dynamic (but inconsistent) bowler. Picked on promise, I didn't agree with this selection either, but it had nothing to do with being from NSW.

Khawaja isn't being considered because he's from NSW. He's being considered because he's the in-form batsman of the Shield competition, he's coming off a fantastic season last year, and he has a good technique and temperament.

Get over it, the NSW-bias thing is a myth, NSW just have a larger population, less competition from winter sports, and a stronger grade cricket system (which may be a result of the former two factors). Get behind the bloody players, and don't bitch about which state they come from. It's pathetic.

If Smith and Hughes are the 2 best batsmen in Shield ranks we are truly screwed. Khawaja is way in front of both of them from what I've seen.

Ferguson makes his runs under pressure in a poor team. I'd say these qualities would be useful now.

Both have nothing to do with their state. Hughes showed all his class in south Africa and never should of been dropped. Who else (from another state) was knocking the door down? And please don't say Shaun Marsh, he is NOT an opener


Smith is just seen as a future batsmen I don't know why, but he is. I don't think he should of been selected and Khwaja or Marsh should of.

The bias is probally getting into the selectors thinking were there trying to fit in someone from every state instead of the best players. I say this because Okeefe is currently the best spinner in the county is from nsw and can't get picked. That's very odd...

Also I'm a bushrangers fan. The only vics I consider test standard are Hussey,White, Mccay and Siddle (Pattinson, wade in the future). But I also can mainly see why they are currently not in the team.

But then, it mostly seems to be a Victoria vs NSW thing... and I'm not from either of those states. So maybe I just don't "get it".

Sure, I see a lot of Blues being given a run in the Test team. But I also think they have some of the best youngsters going around. Lee and Clark fade off... and a new kid called Copeland emerges. They have the two incumbent Test openers (in Watson and Katich*), but also the anointed successor in Hughes, and of course don't forget Jaques. And then along comes a teenager called Maddison who seems ridiculously talented. They have, arguably, the two best spinners in the country in Hauritz and O'Keefe. And of course, Smith who is the second coming of Warnie according to some.

All in all, just a serious amount of talent in the one side.

* And yes, I know that Watson and Katich aren't proper New South Welshmen

I don't know why anyone cares about it either tbh. This parochial crap is one of the worst things about Australian cricket.

I'm not sure what is behind it - but have always seen it as being driven in the main by the Sydney-Melbourne rivalry. Then again, I don't come from either of those places so perhaps I'm missing something.

The Vics seem to have a chip on their shoulder about most things from NSW, but I've never really understood this.

NSW is the bigger state, so it's always going to be likely they'll produce better players and in higher numbers.

I'm not really sure why others (especially Victorians) seem to get so uptight about it all the time.

When it comes to cricket, we're all part of the one nation. So let's get on with forming the best XI regardless of where they come from.

Three best fast/med bowlers

If a batter can bowl a bit, or a bowler is handy with the bat, that's a bonus.

Smith is NOT the sixth best batsman in the country. Nor is the the best spinner. On that basis I dont see why he is in the team. I would say the same if he was from Vic.

Klinger can feel pretty aggrieved at not getting a look in. He's been superb since crossing over to the Redbacks. He gets the odd low score but always seems to bounce back with a big hundred, even in a perennially poor side.

I'd probably have him ahead of Ferguson who is a great ODI player but seems to be bowled/LBW too easily early in his innings in the longer form of the game.

Anyone would be better than Smith at number 6. Typical 20/20 (smash the ball but no patience or substance) player...

It's a shame Jaques is in such poor form - he should never have been left out of the side in the first place.

Hughes was dropped because he was rubbish, he was selected again after rubbish form.

Haddin drops one catch per test match, he's a rubbish keeper.

its clearly and obvious we are carrying rubbish in a weak clarke, a pathetic weak hughes and clearly not ready smith, and possibly the worst keeper in the land in haddin.

The problem is the Shield, it's nothing more blind self interest from State's whose main concern is manufacturing results so they get 6 points rather than 2 and picking players that they think can achieve that rather than benefit Australian cricket.

the writing was on the wall when the likes if Bevan, Elliott and Hussey are moving States and continue to get games despite their test careers being over or never going to be. To make matters worse you see Younis Khan and Andy Flower play for SA.

The Academy did way too good a job and it meant the Shield was flush with about 30 test standard cricketers, many who never got a chance and who just sat in the Shield, and frankly leaving us in a position where all we did was pick 30 years olds into the test side or stopped the progress of development.

Time to accept that despite his deficiencies Hughes has made 2 test 100's and is the best option of opener with Watson (who I don't see as an opener, but for now). Khawaja has to be picked, so does Ferguson, that's 4. Clarke as the 5th batsmen, Hussey plays as he's the best performing older batsmen.

Smith plays as the spinner because Hauritz is the best option by far and if they aren't picking him then the rest of these losers are just clogging up the works. Paine plays.

Bowlers are a parade of ordinary unless they get a bowlers paradise for their particular style, but Copeland and George and possibly Starc need to be looked at very soon so they can develop rather than wasting everyone's time with 29yo pie throwers in Bollinger and Siddle and the like.

In 86/87 we started picking young players rather than go back to the well with Ritchie, Hookes etc, time to start again.

I think this thread is a bit hysterical actually, a few Vics are biased just like a minority from an unnamed western state are paranoid on the AFL board. They are individuals not representing everyone. Lets not make sweeping generalisations shall we.

Hughes has averaged 17 this season so they've picked him based on last year's form by your reckoning?? What better way to lose than base everything on the past. Smith is neither a no.6 nor a spin bowler so he's a useless selection. As Warnie said yesterday, we're playing 1 batter short & 1 bowler short due to the selections. Plenty of others that have shown talent but don't get a look in. It's embarrassing.

Some posters just sprout uneducated opinions and when they get called out for it to provide evidentiary proof to back-up their arguments they turn to abuse - both of the player in question or even the poster themselves. Im thinking of 3 posters right now who do this all the time and it makes me laugh.
