Crackers Keanen in Inside Footy has suggested that Mark Bickley may joing Carlton as one of Pagan's assistiants.

Anyone else heard this one?

That would be a great idea - for both parties. The right sort of intelligent player to make a good coach, so should be good value to Carlton. And after a year or two working under an experienced coach could be ripe to take over the Adelaide job.

First I have heard of it.

Bicks was on 5AA the other day and he said he is taking a break from footy for at least 12 months and then wait ans see what happens. He might still do some mentoring work around the club. He definetly ruled out playing for South Adelaide.

Jerome, I would be very surprised if that was true;)

If Bickley has aspirations of coaching the Crows, I wouldn't mind seeing him as an assistant coach at another club. That at least gives him a well rounded coaching education, rather than being under the same person the whole time. And at Carlton, he'd be with Denis Pagan, there aren't many better coaches than he.

John Worsfold also went straight to the Blues as an assistant coach after retiring as a player. Two years later he returned as to the club he played for as coach, and helped the Eagles surge up the ladder.

My line of thinking Dave,

Just on Pagon does anyone know how many of his ass coaches have gone on to be a senior AFL coach ??

Crackers Keenan to football = the Australia Democrats to politics

Crackers holds the balance of power in the senate?

He may as well... both have the credibility of Stephen Rowe.

Pagan has an ass coach?? Why isnt the general public aware of this?

Are the ass coaches receiving backdoor payments?

Mark 'Bomber' Thomson and Dean Laidley I think are the only ones.

Laidley played under Pagen, but I think he did all his assistant coaching under Mick Malthouse didn't he?

In any case, I think that if Mark Bickley wanted to get into coaching then he'd be really good at it. Speaking as someone who isn't a supporter of your club, I have always had a great respect for Bickley, and I think he has the sort of personality that could be a coach. And if he wanted to do that then being an assistant to Denis Pagen would be an excellent experience for him.

Although, personally, I wouldn't mind seeing him get into the media. The media (in particular in the footy media) is sadly lacking intelligent people and Bickley would be really good in that area too if he went that way.
