Well it seems that 2 additional teams will 100% happen for the next bargaining TV rights. With Geelong's renovated ground, population and proximity to Melbourne it has to be a 100% lock for a team. Would sell out every home game easily.

Canberra would easily sell out 15,000 @ Manuka every game and has a good facility (that could do with a 5,000 capacity expansion).

So it seems that the only last argument is the dilution of the existing talent base. I would assume that the easiest way to overcome this would be to give every team a third import, no?

This would mean that the two expansion teams would only need to find (assuming squad of 15) 16 "new" domestic players.

Assumption:
1. Two new teams = 30 players
2. Less 6 imports (3 a side x 2) = 24
3. Less an additional import for existing teams (8 domestic players theoretically lose contracts with an additional import): 24-8
4. New domestic players needing to be recruited = 16

With plenty of domestic players not with a contract now, i'm sure they could easily find 16 good players.

Few thoughts:

More likely to be more games first, rather than more teams - ie every team gets an additional 'home' game next season for instance.

Squads will be 18 as can't see the ACA agreeing to downsize . . . so if they do expand to have two more teams, then you are looking at 36 players, minus imports and assuming they give the expansion teams 3, so 30 local players. Plenty of opportunity if they are good enough.

Not having a crack at you ep, because I see this idea raised a fair bit - but it's a tad arrogant I reckon! They've got their own competition. Why would they want to be an add-on to ours?

Pros are that NZ can be a part of an already popular T20 comp and BBL get an extra 5 million potential fans. NZ is close enough that it wont be too much of a bother for other teams to travel there. There is an NZ based Aleague team and NRL team, why not for a month long BBL comp? Is it arrogant?

I've seen heaps of kiwis support the idea of one or two NZ based teams in the BBL, on Reddit.

I believe the trade off needs to be more opportunities for the New Zealand players, therefore all NZ players become 'local' players throughout the entire league. This also probably prevents the need for adding an international per side

I'd go 2 of those. Obviously you need a South Island team but without Lancaster Park, there's simply not the infrastructure. Then again, are we really after crowds, or ratings?

NZ teams create the perfect time zones for double headers, even in the Eastern time zone. That sounds like TV dollars on a plate!

But how do you structure 10 teams into 14 matches? Well, either officially, or unofficially, with divisions

Stars. Renegades
Sixers. Thunder
Canes. Heat
Strikers. Scorchers
Auckland. Well./C'Church

Play every team once(9). Return games vs division(4). And add in the derbies, and random matches for those non-derby cities!(1)

70 matches, into 35 days. It's a packed schedule, but it's 3 hours a match, and combining NZDT, AEDT, & AWST, and you've got options aplenty!

Only issue I'm foreseeing is when the Tests are on. CA won't be allowing matches to start before stumps...

There is no professional soccer or rugby league competition in New Zealand.

Why couldnt NZ just join like the state associations? Give NZ Cricket two teams under the same rules and regulations as the state teams, but instead of australian locals, they take nz locals.

I think CA have the right idea, rush forward slowly.
I think an increase in games is clearly imminent.
A increase in clubs a season or two after that. I think they'll pick 2 teams out of Canberra (a monty I recon), GC, FNQ, Perth ( new stadium impetus maybe), & Geelong. I dont see NZ being involved, certainly not in the next few seasons.

The overall quality of teams must be a prime concern for CA. I'm sure they'll do the sums on that before they add clubs.

Players like Putland (if he's still around), Sayers, David Moody, Peter George and such would be playing perhaps.

On the other hand, players like AJ Tye, Liam Bowe (who was very impressive), Cameron Boyce, James Muirhead have all started in the BBL and made a career from the opportunities there.
