We already have. There are eight BBL teams and only six first class team.
And believe me, watching the BBL team and some squads are scrapping the barrel.

I agree that before adding any teams they should make it a full home and away season and solidify that first, but the market for new teams will continue to grow and they will need to capitalise on that eventually.

I’d go 2 teams into NZ and make all players across the two countries “locals”, free to play for any side in the comp without taking an international slot

New Zealand is the only way to expand the competition significantly without noticing a difference in quality. Problem is there is six first class teams there and I get the feeling they won’t join unless they are all represented. The teams are much lower in quality than state or BBL sides and besides Eden Park, Westpac Stadium and McLean Park are the only grounds big enough. Napier has a population of 63,000 meaning that Auckland and Wellington are the only cities really capable of a hosting a side. Christchurch would’ve been if an earthquake hadn’t destroyed Lancaster Park which still hasn’t been replaced to a standard that’d be required of a BBL side.

In Australia Canberra is the only viable option imo. Fans can’t really watch games atm without travelling for hours and hours, decent population, decent enough ground and no other sport to follow at that time of year.

Geelong as great as Kardinya Park is is still just a town just far enough from Melbourne that it’s not always considered outer Melbourne. Getting to Melbourne from Geelong is easy by train - not only that the train line finishes right next to Etihad Stadium. What the Renegades are doing is smart and they’ll capture that market by playing a game a year there without us needing to add a side. This is an eight team properly national comp - there’s not room for three teams in Melbourne and surrounding towns before there is for Sydney.

Gold Coast is death for any sporting team that tries its luck there. I think the Heat if they eventually get a game there will have done the right thing giving Gold Coast people a game closer to home. They may even be keen enough to make the trip into Brisbane if they can finish work early or on weekends. Not sure a team there is viable either.

Every other Australian option is not going to happen. There’s either nowhere to play, not enough local population or monsoonal weather conditions. Besides the player pool isn’t big enough. Just leave the competition as it is (except maybe Canberra as a ninth team) unless New Zealand can get involved which is highly unlikely.
 
It’d be a hard sell for most of the NZ domestic teams, but it would only work if a team was based in Auckland (with games in Hamilton/Napier), and the other team splitting games across the South Island (Christchurch, Dunedin, occasionally Nelson, Queenstown) & Wellington

More games to sell, more flexible scheduling of time slots. I think there’s some positives
 
The Gold Coast would be the one sporting side based in that area that wouldn't fail, because:
1) Cricket is universally popular in Aus, the only sport every part of Australia unanimously loves, and crowds would show up. There would be no anti-sentiment or division or conflict as there is with football codes, and it isn't baseball or basketball, minor sports with teams and leagues which have failed in every city, never mind GC...
2) CA would run it, meaning dodgy real estate deals and corrupt megalomaniac chairmen wouldn't be able to f### with the team, and
3) The Gold Coast is turning itself into a huge international city, with resultant corporatism and opportunity. At some stage, the dam has to break - the days of the curse of GC sporting teams, amateur administration and the overriding ease of the GC lifestyle infiltrating everything are set to end. The AFL is wise to pump bucks into the Suns, the NRL would be stupid to scuttle the Titans, and CA would surely know the only thing stopping them from building Franchise IX on the GC is their own prudence in building a strong established comp first with what's already there before expanding...

It's a city that's 250% bigger than it was when I moved there in 1996, and the people who were immigrants with me now have teenage GC-born kids and houses and identify as GC permanent residents...absolutely guaranteed to succeed...

I've come to agree with this. I lived in Canberra for 8 years, and I think it's criminally ignored in the Australian sporting landscape. But if you introduce Canberra, you also need another team, and I just don't think there's a good 2nd candidate, nor do I think we have the depth of talent (yet) to sustain another 2 teams.

If we wanted to expand the BBL, I think NZ is the place to do it - it expands the player pool, it expands the tv market, and it provides more time zones in which to schedule games.

I don't think the benefit is massive - but it's not fair or correct to say that it doesn't benefit CA at all. Another market of 4 million people isn't significant, nor is the level of limited overs talent.

Cricket Australia wouldn't get most of the revenue from any of the NZ teams because Cricket NZ would want its share. And Australians aren't going to be paying extra to watch their city play Wellington or Auckland.
And the limited overs talent is better yes but none of those players can play for Australia in the future.

Do you realise that NZ once played in out 50 over competition? With TV & the popularity of the BBL I recon its very possible 2 NZ teams would do well.

Nice sales pitch. Maybe so. Any franchise would be able to play anywhere, given enough handouts.
The looming Comgames will be good for the GC & might change a few ideas about the place. Even so GC has a terrible history of failed sporting ventures.
 
I just do not see how New Zealand bastardising their local competition is good for the game there or in any way benefits Australian cricket either?

Sports that failed requires a full time set up. A season that can last 6 months.

Big bash is a month or so long. 4 or 5 home games. Party atmosphere.

It is cheap entertainment over the holiday period in the holiday capital of Australia. As long as tickets stay cheap, especially for families. It would work.

What is the aim of the Big Bash?

1. Make money for Australian cricket
2. Get non cricketing Australian families watching cricket.
3. Get more money for domestic players.

New Zealand actually fails all of these criteria.

Its about number 2.

Its marketing a form of cricket that is appealing in this day & age. In effect its about saving the games arse.

I'm not advocating for a NZ team or two. I was just informing some that we've done it before. We also have NZ teams in the NRL & NBL. So it must be of some benefit, to someone, sometime, somewhere. ;)

NRL and NBL are run completely differently to the BBL with different aims. It is a stupid comparison.
