We already have. There are eight BBL teams and only six first class team.
And believe me, watching the BBL team and some squads are scrapping the barrel.

Without naming names one of those squads rhymes with Mobart Murricanes. Eight is enough teams as is, if expansion were to occur they need to up the International allowance by 1 per team as well.

- Baseball and basketball - they failed everywhere...
- Gold Coast Giants and Seagulls - run like country sides, and the GC only had 200k. The old style of running NSWRL clubs was what caused Superleague, so they weren't alone...
- Bad News Bears - Christopher Skase's toy...
- Gold Coast United - Clive Palmer's toy...
- Chargers - casualty of Super League - when wound up, they had $4m in the bank...
- Titans - crazy admin throughout - power hungry Michael Searle, then a board who sunk the team with get-rich-quick schemes. Throughout, onfield they've often been ok and they've always had decent support...
- Suns - struggling, but despite the hype our footy is nowhere near as popular as RL. A hostile environment and some questionable actions fully supported, paid for and guided by the ruling body based in Melbourne...

The history of GC teams has been either incredibly inept admin or sports which simply haven't been able to survive anywhere in Aus. Cricket is a completely different beast, with no similarities to previous sports. It would walk into a fully developed stadium (those battles have already been fought and won by other sports) and only have to play a dozen matches over a month or so at most with an invitational side who don't have to commit to being GC citizens (the BBL is a working holiday for the world's best cricketers) and whose every whim is catered for by CA. There are no attractions or distractions which would impress international cricketers as much as they do footballers and country-bred Australians, and they aren't there long enough to care or cause trouble (which is why Hobart has no trouble fielding a team)...

Nice sales pitch. Maybe so. Any franchise would be able to play anywhere, given enough handouts.
The looming Comgames will be good for the GC & might change a few ideas about the place. Even so GC has a terrible history of failed sporting ventures.
Dodgy ipad wrecks my continuity...what's just above was what I wrote last night in answer to some other guy, but this thing froze...

Past history is irrelevant for all the reasons listed above...it's not the place, it's the people, and these days there are shitloads more people...sporting and business goldmine set to explode...

Plenty of articles coming out of the last few days about expansion. Canberra, Geelong and Gold Coast have all reiterated their desire for a BBL franchise.

My apology for being stupid. Whats your excuse for being a rude prick?

I'm not sure why you're getting so defensive. You can't articulate why adding a team from New Zealand adds anything to the existing competition or benefits NZC in any way.

give it a few more years and consolidation before we expand. adding a few more international players and audience size may be a good thing in time.

NZ is the logical one but perhaps even tapping into the Indian demographic of Malaysia might be worthwhile investigating.

Voted Geelong, Perth and ACT.

Perth to make use of the ground, Geelong and ACT seem logical

You don't think Geelong's population of 250k vs Gold Coast's 600k+ is a factor?
38k average to the Cats and 15k to the Suns this season says enough.

They don't support teams well enough. Simple.

That 15k probably includes far more interstate people than Geelongs crowd too.

To be fair, the split of allegiances between football codes in Queensland likely plays a big part in that. I don't think you would find such bias if a cricket team were created. But maybe I'm wrong. Let's see how many people attend the Renegades v Sixers clash at Kardinia Park on January 3. If they pull more than 25,000 then I'm willing to say you're right because Metricon Stadium's capacity is 25k.

Metricon will soon enough be 35k for the Commonwealth Games. Perfect size for the BBL.

I think Gold Coast and Canberra are the next logical two, with stadiums ready. Gold Coast wearing gold/yellow and Canberra in maroon.

Geelong I understand as well but I don't think we need to dilute the Victorian market just yet.

Why?
The main aim of the BBL is for Australian domestic.

just like how cinemas will not exist in 10-20 years as Netflix will pay more for first release films. Meaning cinemas won't have a product to sell.

Same said with sport. Leagues that can pay the most, will attract quality players. Without quality players, the BBL won't exist. Therefore, the BBL must grow its audience or die.

The lack of the best players in the world has not been an issue for the BBL at all and CA quite clearly wants to maintain international cricket as being more important.

In fact CA even went out of their way to accept the smaller tv rights offer from Channel 10 to get BBL on free to air tv.

That was because it was the biggest deal from the fta networks.

I dont think Im going out on a limb here by saying it will be much much larger next time.

Thats not the point. The point was that getting it on FTA trumped getting the money deal from Fox aka CA preferred to pursue non money objectives.

Again, just dribble without really knowing why.

you would think if Canberra gets a team than a ACT team would come into the shefield Shield and the 50 over competition as well, but if they do that, the cricket Australia xi might go away and not give the young and talented guys that don't get a game might be out of a job. the only hope for a ACT domestic (not BBL) team is that it worked for the women.
