I'm not going but if any of you people on this forum are, post reviews etc on here as im interested in hearing how it was. I'm especially interested in hearing how poison the well and thursday were if anyone catches them.

Saw Metallica 2 nights in a row! Awesome!

Metallica were the obvious highlights, though one surprise was Jet who were much better than I expected.

Just curious, am i right in expecting the Flaming Lips to be the last band on, even after Metallica?

If so, that is simply stupid scheduling by the organisers. I find the Flaming Lips' music boring and longwinded at the best of time, but at the end of a 10+ hour day, particularly after Metallica, who by all accounts are doing an old school set, i can't see the Flaming Lips being the type of act that will get my party started by that stage of procedings!!

different

The Flaming Lips and Metallica are on completely different stages in completely different areas.

Metallica start before them, and, subsequently, finish before them. The last act to finish is actually the Basement Jaxx at 11 (an hour after Metallica).

I'm not looking forward to the stampede of kiddies rushing halfway across the showgrounds after that.

I went to Gold caost BDO Sunday!

Saw the Darkness, Dandys, Muse, The Mars Volta, Strokes and Metallica

The Darkness put on a great show, they reminded me of a Status Quo sound with a Queen facade.

Was right up the front for the Dandys, they played no songs from the Moneyhouse cd. The lovely Zia Mccabe even manged to give me a wave, she's red hot!!!

Muse absolutely blew me outta the park, they are now officially my new fav band.

The Mars Volta were definately the most interesting to watch, the lead singer zips all over the stage, doing handstands, jumping off speakers etc etc. All their songs morphed into one big song, i think they stopped once with about ten minutes left. Reminded me of Jonny butler and how they extend their songs.

I was pretty stuffed when the Strokes came on. Not a huge fan but was good see them.

Metallica opened with Blackenned, my all time fav Metallica song and for the first set they played all the old songs. Fanfar*kentastic!!!!.

Ive got a couple of close up fotos of Metallica, if anyone is interested i can email em on

Cheers!!

Half way through the singer changed costumes, he came back out in an interesting flaired catsuit complete with a devils tail.

How are the Strokes and Jet getting along?>

(after one of the strokes bandmembers told the rolling stone that hearing the jet's album - get born makes him not want to play music. He also said that their look was contrived.)

Their look may be contrived to a point but no more than any other new wave bands out there, including The Strokes. As for their cd, it's ok but not brilliant. Some good songs on there and a couple of stinkers.

Watched a few hours of the sydney BDO on [V] and was impressed by the lost prophets, hadnt heard them properly before and im keen to start listening to them more often. Saw some Jet who were impressive as always.

I thought I'd continue this thread instead of starting a new one.

Well yesterday, fronted up at 11am. Had a wander around then went and queued at the D barrier entrance. Saw Skulker. Ther seemed good but I didn't know their stuff. Then came Fear Factory. Sensational! Burton was in top form and a great set.

Next on was the Darkness. They were great! Although I realised at the start that their album only goes for 38 minutes and their set was 45 minutes, so I guess that's why they opened with the instrumental. If The Darkness were good, The Datsuns were much, much better. Really tight, and Dolf was at his showman best.

Retreated up to the stands with beer and saw the last 20 mins of the Back Eyed Peas. Not my bag, but they had a good crowd watching them. SFK seemed alright except I couldn't hear them from the grandstand. Saw the first 15 mins of Dandys. OK I guess.

Next came Highlight No 1..MUSE! Awesome. Matt Bellamy was in sublime form, having 40 possesions before half time. Then toddled off to see Kings Of Leon. Really good, then went off and saw the Mars Volta. Again great, but the missus was hungry and i am seeing them at the Hi Fi on Wed night, so we went for dinner.

Then I went and got a good spot for Metallica. Sat through the Strokes. They're OK I guess. They seem to come out with a great song and next time I hear them it's average at best. But people like them and they sell records, so who am I to say anything.....

If Matt Bellamy was collecting posessions at will, Metallica kicked 12 from full forward. Amazing as ever. My 4th time seeing them, but they were awesome again. Fade to Black was outstanding, Creeping Death, Seek and Destroy and Battery were masterful. In fact every song killed including the St. Anger songs.

Setlist went I think: (not in order)

Blackened
Sanitarium
Creeping Death
Sad but True
Seek and Destroy
Frantic
Fade to Black
Dirty Window
Harvester Of Sorrow
Battery
Nothing Else Matters
Master Of Puppets
One
Enter Sandman

All in all, a big and great day out!

Thought I'd join in...

Arrived at 9.45 and worked for two hours (got in for free as a result). Did anyone buy a St. John's survival pack or Ear plugs whilst they lined up? You may have brought them from me...

First up: The Darkness. Fun set. Justin Hawkins is a skinny, energetic presence on stage, and the costumes were a laugh. Noticed a lot of Darkness memorabilia (hats / caps) was sold after their set. Seems like they made some new friends.

Lost Prophets. Went because a friend wanted to. They were really good. Most impressive is that despite their Nu Metal roots, they came a cross as fun, slightly cheeky Welsh lads who are having a ****ing good time. All this and they rock pretty hard. I was very impressed.

Peaches. Missed the start (had some lunch, got caught ina crush). Wow. the 80's pop / rock / amsterdam sex show comination was pretty effective. A little repetitive musically, but she put on a good show. Ended ina flurry of Karaoke, groping and vomited fake blood. The crowd loved it.

Had a sit down, and met some folks. Saw some of The Dandy Warhols. They were okay. Have a tendency to think they're Sonic Youth and over-indulge on the feedback. But, I was a long way away in the small stand, mostly having a rest.

Muse. Oh, yes, they were fine. Very fine. Soaring, over-the-top, dramatic - all the things you want from them. They don't have much stage presence, but it takes a heck of a band to create atmosphere at the showgrounds, and they did. Excelelnt.

Wandered around.

Saw some of the Strokes. Meh. They left me cold, and I wandered off again.

Magic Dirt. Went with friends, and was impressed. They were really solid. Had some little kid providing Air Guitar towards the end of the set, and he was hilarious. they can rock, but have a strong command of pop hooks that get the audience shaking their ass. Impressed.

The Flaming Lips. Words fail to describe how good they were. The absolute highlight. it was a massive party of a thing, with animal suits, balloons, glitter, lights, puppets, hands, sing-alongs and ass-shaking.
Absolutely briliant.

Then I saw the end of Basement Jaxx. They were good. The boiler room was horrible (as expected), but it was a good way to end the night.

Disappointed I missed The Kings Of Leon and Metallica (the Flaming Lips made up for it, but it would've been nice).

One of the better BDO's of recent times.

I arrived with my group about 12.30 and headed straight to the Essential Stage to catch the last few songs from Architecture in Helsinki. a small but seemingly appreciative crowd were enjoying them.

Both my co-BDOers were there for the first time, so I decided to give them a bit of a guided tour of the showgrounds before the time to pay full attention to bands would arrive.

Wandered past Dallas Crane performing at the Green Stage and through the Hothouse before reaching the rides. My mate instantly wanted to go on the Bunjee/catapult ride. I was cool with that...until I saw the price. $30 for a 25 second ride....Fu(K that! Instead we went on the more sedate ferris wheel at $4 each, and checked out the talent from high in the sky :D

Decided it was time to have a quick bite, and then headed over to check out the Boiler Room. Salmonella Dub had a fair size crowd dancing away, and were shortly followed by Audio Bullys, whom I enjoyed for the short time I saw them.

Next up, I was dragged off to see the Black Eyed Peas set. It was the show the other two had mainly come to see, so...I was hoping for more stuff off the older albums, but at least the crowd seemed to enjoy it. Sound was ordinary though.

Something for Kate entring the stage gave me the perfect reason to exit...they are goddamned boring! Wandered down to the Lilypad with a mate and started watching nude aerobics with our trainer, Heidi the Sausage :D No real audience participation meant the show was a fizzer though...at least at the point I left.

Rushed back to the main stage to catch the Dandy Warhols. Met up with a few more friends and moved in close only to realise that no-one else besides me could see the stage, with them all being short-arses. the sound was pretty ordinary, but I still enjoyed the set nonetheless. Strange thing was, I found the sound better on the other side of the stage, where we moved to prepare for Muse. saw the last half of the Dandys from the other side of the sound tower, and seemed to enjoy it more  I hope the sound is better at the Metro tonight.

Muse...what can be said that hasn't already? The show was indeed awesome, from the first guitar lick of "stockholm Syndrome", to the fuzzy fading of "Plug in Baby", I stood in amazement at just how well they convey there music in a live set-up. Matthew Bellamy has an amazing voice. Definite highlight of the day!*

The Mars Volta on the green stage was next. I love some of Deloused, and all of Tremulant...loved at the drive-in and love Sparta, but for some reason just couldn't get into this set...dare I say over-indulgent and a tad boring? Sure, Cedric and Omar show they've lost nothing in the past three years, except maybe a few more kilos each, but the free form stuff just bores me. It looked like it bored the guy on the bongos too. Maybe it was just the sun in my eyes....

Had a quick bite before heading back to the main stage for the Strokes. If ever there was a guy who seemed bored, it was Joe Casablancas. "Hi, thanks, yeah...the next song is called..."
what was with their set ending half an hour early? Did they start
early or what?

Saw the first 45 minutes of Metallica...I just don't get it...

Moved back to the green stage for one more highlight...The motherfacking FLAMING LIPS!!! How good were they? The big screen playing filmclips, the nude karate chick and public service announcements...the balloons...the animals...the audience participation...the White Stripes "Seven Nation Army"/Butthole Surfers "Moving to Florida" song amalgam...the Metallica tribute times...

Hats off to The Flaming Lips...definite highlight of the night!* Can't wait to see them again on Thursday night. Couldn't be facked going back to the boiler room again for Basement Jaxx. the new location left it even futher away from the carpark...besides who hasn't seen Basement Jaxx by now?

All in all...a solid Big Day Out. Two absolute highlights, and enough filler to entertain in the hours in between.

*Yes, I am allowed an absolute highlight of both the day and the night!

I'm pretty sure the kid would be Dylan, the drummer's son...been playing a toy guitar on stage for about 3 or 4 years now. He gets the cheers every time he gives the horned hand signal \m/

Went to BDO after pulling an all nighter, so by midnight last night I was pretty ****ed. Just a brief summary of the bands I saw:

Skulker - Only saw little bits as we were buying merch and putting our bags in the cloak room, but they didn't sound too bad.

Fear Factory - Played a great set, though I didn't manage to get into the D for it.

The Darkness - Got into the D about 5 minutes into their set and they were thoroughly enjoyable. The crowd really warmed to them which was great to see.

The Sleepy Jackson - I enjoyed it while others I was going with didn't. Not one of my highlights but they played a solid set.

Black Eyed Peas - Saw them while lining up to get back into the D. I don't like them and it didn't make lining up anymore enjoyable.

Something For Kate - Not a fan of their style of music, and only saw their set so I could get close for Muse. Didn't hate it though which is always a plus.

Dandy Warhol’s - Saw them from the opposite stage and if I wasn't so desperate to get at the front of Muse I would have gone over to watch as well as listen. They played a very good set.

Muse - Well what can I say. I was front row right in front of Matt for the band I went to BDO to see. Awesome set. Matt's voice was as good as ever and he didn't miss a beat on guitar or keyboard. This was kind of surprising since he cut his finger early on and I noticed it was still bleeding towards the end.

I wish I could've afforded a sideshow ticket at the time they were released, but at least I got to see my favorite current band live.

I can't for the life of me remember the order of songs, but they played:

Stockholm Syndrome
Time is running out
Thoughts of a dying atheist
Sunburn
New Born
Plug in Baby
Citizen Erased
Muscle Museum
Bliss
Hysteria
Butterflies & Hurricanes

Edited, thanks to Carlos.

After Muse, totally on a high, I went to see the other main band I wanted to see - The Mars Volta. They also went off. From the technical problems at the start where I thought Omar was going to hit the sound tech, to Cedric climbing the side of the stage, they were simply awesome. They played 3 songs in the set, each taking a new form, led by Omar's scintillating improvised guitar riffs. I am trying to scrape the money together to go to their sideshow.

Nothing from here on in could top my last couple of hours, so I went along with what some of my mates wanted to see.

I caught the last 30 minutes of Poison The Well and the mosh pit was the first good one for the day. They played a great set, and apart from the elbow I got to the head it was one of my highlights.

I wanted to catch Metallica, but realizing there was no chance of getting into the D by then, I stayed at the Essential Stage to see Thursday who were better than I expected.

After Thursday I went on to the Flaming Lips, after watching about 5 minute of Metallica from afar. While the Flaming Lips aren't at all my type of music, I still enjoyed their set. Especially when they broke into The White Stripes’ 7 Nation Army. The giant balloons were also lots of fun.

Overall I had a great day. Although I was only truly excited by 2 bands, the rest gave me enough to leave me satisfied by the time I stumbled back to the train at 11.

I apologize if this seems a fragmented review but I’m too sun burnt and tired to bother proof reading it.

Cool reports people.

I went too. 9th year running. Possibly not the greatest of times i've had compared to the others, but it was still a pretty cool day.

Caught the end of Fear Factory's set. The sound was attrocious i thought, especially the guitar sound, but it was still great to see them back (even with only half the band there).

The Darkness had me smiling from start to finish. Justin Hawkins is a very entertaining performer. "Love on the Rocks" was a particular highlight.

The Datsuns bored me senseless so i bolted off to catch the last coupla Salmonella Dub tunes. Heard lotsa good things about this act and fromt he small sample i caught it looked worthy.

The missus was keen on seeing the Black Eyed Peas so i endured most of that. Terrible sound, but they were energetic and were getting the crowd into it. And while i have very little time for their recorded music, geez their rythim section were cooking!! That drummer was a monstor!!

I did manage to escape to catch the end of the LostProphets set. They might as well call themselves the Lost Incubuses. Meh. Tight enough but hardly re-inventing the wheel.

Really wanted to catch Peaches but couldn't be shagged tackling the crowd so stuck around for a bit of Blood Duster who were typically brutal (and funny).

Darted around and got in the front few rows for one of Australia's brightest shining stars: 1200 Techniques. These guys deserve to be massive and are every bit as good as half of these so-called "hip hop" acts we get subjected to on radio and TV. Geez these guys know how to put on a show! Incredibly vibey set and super-impressive. They had most of the Black Eyed Peas backing band standing side-stage to check them out and everyone who saw them was groovin! Great set!

After that it was flat knacker back to the main stadium to see the reason i went: Muse.

I was shattered i couldn't get into the "D", but still got a good spot and stood there with my jaw hanging as these 3 amazing musicians proceded to sit me on my arse!! Some of the tempos were strangely a little pulled back, but nonetheless these guys were incredible. Their intentions were clear when they opened with the monstrous "Stockholm Synrome". Anyone who wasn't sure what these guys were about before this were in no way unclear by the end. This lead beautifully into the rock-festival friendly "Thoughts of a Dying Athiest" which ensured they had everyone's attention.

"Hysteria" also rocked very hard live and got a huge crowd reaction, while "Muscle Museum" was simply superb. "Bliss" was a suprise inclusion and didn't really fit in amongst the rest of their set but was still delivered brilliantly, while a slightly reworked "Butterflies and Hurricanes" translated amazingly well live (complete with classical piano solo in the middle). Predictably, their most well known radio hit in Australia "Time is Running Out" drew the biggest applause from the crowd, but the highlight of their set for me was an amazing performance of the brillaint "Citizen Erased". My god that is a superb song but they took it to another stratesphere live.

Closing with a ball tearing version of "Plug in Baby" followed by a massive crowd response and this all too short 1 hour set cemented them as easily the classiest and best band on the bill. I hope like hell that the positive reaction they received encourages them to tour Australia in their own right (and venues MUCH bigger than the fricken Hi-Fi Bar  ) but i guess album sales will determine that. But all their set did for me was highlight the ludicrousy of their 5pm timeslot.

After that i was just about ready to go home as i knew noone left ont he bill could match the high i was on. But of course i hung around and caught a bit of Mars Volta. Like Fwoy, i was a big At the Drive Fan. They blew me away a few year's back when i saw them at the Melbourne and Sydney BDO's, so i was expecting big things from MV. I was disappointed. They bored me sensless to be honest. The whole improv thing can be very hit and miss, and they missed IMO. But i've had a lot of people disagree with me on that over the last 24 hours, so perhaps i just didnt get it.

The Hoodoo Gurus just didnt belong. I'll grant them that they were in terrific form and had a great sound and got a very decent crowd response, but the time slot, the main stage and all that just didn't make sense.

The Strokes were insultingly bad IMO. I am biased as IMO there are few bands on this planet more over-rated than these hacks, but seeing as they were on 2 hours later than the brilliant Muse, i expected to be impressed. Entertained. Wowed. Instead i got a egotistical bunch of d*cks staring at their shoes playing boring, unimaginative shlock. Well that what i thought of the 40 seconds that i saw anyway.

Melbourne hip hop act "DownSyde" were terrific. They had a very responsive Hothouse crowd in the palm of their hands and put on an awesome set. Really dug them. I stuck around for the first half of King Kapisi + P-Money and Scribe's set also and thes Kiwi dudes are world class. Some seriously good hip hop.

Bolted off for the first half of Magic Dirt's set. The last time i saw them live was about 5 years ago and they were appalling back then so i was hugely impressed at how much they have improved. Adalita has taken a million steps upwards in terms of live vocals and their sound was huge.

I even tossed up staying there and giving (The Artists Formerly Known As) Metallica a miss, but who was i kidding?

I bolted up the stairs into the main stadium for the opening guitar lick of "Blackened". F*ck me what a great way to start what was a suprisingly great set! "Creeping Death" was next and it was game on!!

They proceded to put on an old school greatest hits show, though they did let themselves down with 3 tracks off St Excrement or whatever its called. A fair train wreck in the middle with the incredibly over-rated Lars Urlich the main offender in the middle of the title track of that pile of crap was rather amusing. At least they have realised the error of their ways and seem to nolonger being playing any of the crap off Load or Re-Load.

"Fade to Black" was a highlight, as was "Master of Puppets" (amazingly the complete version which is about the first tour in 15 years they've done that live). Not suprisingly, the biggest reaction in terms of crown participation was "Nothing Else Matters", while 2 encores (unheard of at the BDO) added to the specticle. The pyro/fire-works show which preceded "One" was pretty cool, which lead to the finale and exactly what most of the kids wanted to hear: Enter Sandman.

But something just wasn't quite right. I'm not sure if it was the sugar nice James Hetfield impersonator that fronted the band last night. It certainly wasn't the James that was abusing crowds back in the 80's and early 90's. I mean, i've been to and seen and heard stacks of Metallica shows and never been told to "take care of eachother" and to "drive home safely" at the end of a gig. Or thanked for singing the songs back to him when demanded. Usually its abuse for not being angry enough for his liking.

And Lars. Lars, Lars, Lars. I will never understand why he is considered the bench mark of matal drumming by so many. Sure, back in the hay day he had a bit of energy and vibe about him. But a great drummer he never was, and certainly isn't now.
Now he is just smackable. And i know it was he who recorded many of those classic tunes that we grew up on. But geez he truggles to play alot of them live these days. But i guess the boys are getting on a bit now.

All in all, not one of the better BDO's i've been to, but still a good day.

How much are we looking at for band t-shirts? $30-40?
