Attitude!

Most of you would have noticed in years gone by that when the club gets a few frees paid against them in succession (such as the second quarter today) they would drop their head.

Today, however, was the first time since 2007 where i have seen the players keep their head held high from go to woe.

Was very pleasing, and hopefully it will continue for the rest of the season

Big positive today was that we won with so many players down or looked flat from last week.

We still should have won by at least 4 gls except for our bad kicking for goals.

The 4 points :p

While unfortunately not a repeat of our performance against the Blues, at least we were able to keep our cool under pressure and kick a winning score. In times gone past this year, once a team starts reeling us in, we're gone - we seem to simply fall flat and throw in the towel. However, the side was able to hang on and, with huge credit to cyril for his incredible efforts in the last few minutes, they weren't going to simply chip it around for a few minutes when scores were level and settle for a draw - they came for the 4 points, not 2.

Additional: Was great to see Dews' jumper do a lap of honor prior to the commencement of the game ;)

cyril was absolutley immense in the last 5 minutes. the ability for him to sum up whether to kick it to roughead or whitecross and ultimatley pull his kick to whitecross was simply brilliant. he is just a freak.

He definitely knew that he had to produce something special in the last few times he went near the ball. You could almost see the determination to win the contest on his face, which is different for Rioli, as most things don't get a reaction out of him.

In a word, MITCH - reckon his second half was outstanding - showed huge leadership and just did lots of little things to keep the team believing....

on a side note, Cyril running in from a kickout against Shaw was huge too, can't believe he (Shaw) did it twice in a row!

Positives:
Stratton first year of AFL footy and is currently our best tall defender.
Hooper very lively in the first half with great tackling pressure. Sadly didn't convert.
Peterson Worth going just to see his mark in the last quarter. Will be better with another preseason.
Burgoyne All class. Disposal, leadership and natural footy brain.

We beat a seasoned, if undermanned, opponent on their terms.

Stratton, Hooper, Peterson, Ellis all good or very good.

Cyril's last few minutes of the game were sensational.

He won 2 or 3 50-50 contests that could've gone either way that won us the game.

Ugly win but a good one all the same.

You know the real players from the pretenders when the scores are level and there is 5 minutes to go. Finals is about intense pressure of the highest order and this after a long season. At the end of a match when your tired and the game is on the line, that emphasises finals more than anyone else. Rioli just shows his class. Battling OP, struggling for most of the year but is able to find something extra. So did a few of our other stalwarts.

Speaking of stalwarts, Stratton is going to be a 200 game player, mark it down. I've watched nearly every game this year and his in top 10 defenders in the game so far.

Won the clearances for the first time this season since round 1. Not too mention won the contested possessions against a team who is leading the league in that department.

Still questionsing Ellis output, although it looks like Buddy will be out and Brown is out for 4 weeks so he will keep his spot. Wonder who out of Muston, Schonemakers, Morton, Moss, Stokes and Ladson will get in this week. I'd go with Muston and Ladson.

Rioli doesn't have OP.

I'd really like someone to clear this up for me if they could. One minute I hear he's struggling with OP and will be out for five or so weeks, then I hear the opposite the next.

Anyway, great game from our boys today. The scoreline flattered Sydney beyond belief. We should have won by at least 30 points, but poor kicking let us down. Impressed with the usual suspects but also Stratton; he's really growing on me and I think he'll be an important part of our back six in years to come. Burgoyne continues to impress, Buddy looked dangerous around goal. Sadly he'll be out for a while. :(

Looking forward to next week. If we go out with the same attitude and approach, we should squash the Power.

The young'ens.

Stratton. Wow. He pretty much did it all didn't he.

Renouf around the ground. His ruck game is up to scratch, but great to see him working on (being allowed to!) this aspect of his game.

Whitecross still has lapses with disposal, but was impressed with him today.

Rhan Hooper. Is he directing traffic in our forwad line? Noticed after one of the breaks he was talking to Buddy and Rough (or maybe Peterson), and it looked like the kind of forward talk thats been absent for a long time. Working with the like of Lethal, Voss, even Bradshaw and Brown, he could offer our own towers something Im sure.

OP usually takes a month but in some cases can take months to recover from, depending on how you look at it. The problem is not so much recovery time if you are not playing sport it doesn't really matter but in Rioli's case his an AFL player therefore even after you can recover and are able to play problems can persists months later. In 2006 Hodge struggled all year with OP. He wasn't looking like the same player till later the next year.

There is post that I believe to be a factual statement of what is ailing Cyril. If you do a search you'll find it on the forum. It might even be in the medical thread.
