A genuinely nice guy (had the pleasure of meeting him), was open about his demons and unfortunately I guess he succumbed. The world is a poorer place without him.

This one shocked me because I recalled seeing something about him very recently. Turns out there were a couple of interviews with him in the media last week, and he shared the story of his struggles with the England Lions team a few days ago. I think he may have even been in attendance at the Perth test (seemed like he lived there)

Really sad. His career was before my time but I'd seen highlights of his batting. He seemed like a player who took the game on.

He moved to Perth many many years ago (that's how I met him), it was his home. Not going to reveal too much of his personal life, but he worked in his brother's business (Chris, also a Test cricketer for England) in between commentary gigs. Turned to religion, therapy, medical treatment...so you cannot say he gave up trying to fight his dark place, just like he never gave up when playing for England.

In the end the dark place won.

Bit of a maverick in that he chose to run against Dean Brown after the factional fight left him not being endorsed as the Liberal candidate - Stan decided to run as a Liberal Independent and won the seat anyway

His son Iain Evans succeeded his father and held the seat from 1993-2014

I actually bought my first Voodoo doll kit at like 13/14 - it was marketed towards the younger generation

I'm pretty such i still own it a couple (nearly few) decades on


I also had a book of spells as a youngster - not sure if I still own that one though
