no chance.
in fact every footy fan survey has Richmond behind Hawthorn and Geelong, and marginally ahead of St Kilda in terms of supporter base.
Disagree very much. There is daylight between Collingwood and the rest. No 'probably marginally' in it at all.I honestly don't know where you get that. I accept it is a widely held assumption but that is all it is.
Essendon have at least as many armchair fans as them and would be drawing as well as them if they were going as well onfield and historically both Carlton at Princes Pk.and Richmond at Punt Rd.regularly outdrew them at Vic. pk.
Taking all into account Collingwood are probably marginally the biggest but there is no "daylight" at all between any of the big 4. A top 4 Ess or Rich would be drawing roughly what Collingwood have been drawing.
Crap turnout by fans yesterday as well mind you. Only 59k for something the club built up regardless of the shit we watched!
The survey that matters is memberships where people put their hands in their pockets and fish out the green. In that survey Carlton are somewhere outside the big 4 down with the minnows. Richmond of course are not. Its just as well you are regularly finalling or the already huge gap between the big 4 membership bases and yourselves would be enormous. You might be competitive with the Bombers and Tigers next year in terms of membership base if you get to the GF. If you slip back to mid ladder...forget it.

Richmond will be always the big one to me.
Best song,mascot, location,best legendary players.
Richmond Paddock just across the road.
Punt Road Oval in the best spot in Australia for a football club.
Richmond pubs which ALL supporters go too.
WE RULE BABY!!!!
Collingwood moved to Tigerland, took the Clokes and Malthouse and now on the verge of 2 flags.
Nothing wrong with Richmond.
You do relize that those 7500 members not included in that tallie, still pay frikin $80 per year, in my books thats a member. Pi$$ off with your trolling, afl should post membership revenue from now on!
Carlton set membership records while it was on the bottom of the ladder... The least successful club on the field for a decade.
Even in 2011 http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/118901/default.aspx
Richmond official membership figure is 40,184.
Carlton official membership figure is 43,791
You sold all your memberships before the fans realised how shit they were.
You didnt think that Brendan Gale combining ticketed and non-ticketed on the website LOL actually changed anything did you?![]()

Not sure about this , as long as the pies stay successful on the field, eddie and the admin boys will role in the dough like theres no tommorrow. clubs like the pies eagles and so on will always remain above the tigers, personally i see the tiges no greater force than the dogs or the saints for that matter. The only way to change this, is to start with the board growing balls and be ruthless in advertising, coaching, team list, training, membership, sponsership. currently you have none of these attributes. the pies have all of them. Also australia has changed since the 60 s and 70 s so many new ozzys have come to this country and the first thing they see on tv is all collingwood, the choice becomes rather easy for them. 20 or so games on free tv. The sponsership list goes on foreverAt the moment you're right, but clearly this wasn't always the case and won't always be the case in the future. What about before Eddie, when Collingwood were in the doldrums, and Essendon were the powerhouse of the competition? Or in the Richmond glory days of the late 60s and 70s, we were much bigger than Collingwood then.
Def a bigger club than Carlton. Carlton are up and about and can't get anywhere near the members of other clubs. Probably a bigger club than Essendon, but not as big as Collingwood. Hawthorn and Geelong slot somewhere ahead of Carlton but behind Essendon.
Collingwood
Daylight
Richmond
Essendon
Hawthorn
Geelong
Carlton
The only issue might be, is that Richmond don't have a massive, spiteful two way rivalry with anyone anymore. Not like Hawks v Cats & Dons, or Carlton v Collingwood & Essendon. Maybe a few years at the top for Richmond might re-ignite old rivalries??
OMG you have no Idea! Carlton are easily the 3rd best supportered club in Australia put of the Victorian Clubs in order it would look like this;
Collingwood easily Number 1 then Essendon then followed by Carlton, Richmond Hawthorn and Geelong are very close to each other in terms of Nation wide support! Then a gap from St.Kilda then another gap from Melbourne, Bulldgos and North!
- Collingwood
- Essendon
- Carlton
- Richmond
- Hawthorn
- Geelong
- St.Kilda
- Melbourne
- Western Bulldogs
- North Melbourne
