It would be the players association

Seeing as they have to maintain fitness anyway, and careers are limited to a few yers for most, you’d think the AFLPA would be chasing the maximum amount of coin per player. And surely that’s a longer season, swapping out preseason and ‘time off’ where they still have to don fair bit of fitness work anyway.

And to be clear, I’m not criticising the club, it’s the AFL, more so the union that’s set up a system that after 3 weeks training after 3 months off they get another 3 weeks meanwhile other clubs have had more of a preseason.

Do they need the to catch up on pre-season weeks if they play for longer though?

Isn’t there such a thing over training?

What is the ideal training load?

You're making a fatal mistake .....believing PS training is simply fitness

There's skills work, gameplan, and fitness ......in shortened pre-seasons, one or more of those 3 components has to be compromised

It's particularly difficult for 1-2 year players to get up to speed in those components ....they need greater exposure to get up to speed of their more seasoned team-mates .....and then supporters scream that the young players are not getting selected earlier .....I wonder why

They’ve had 11 weeks off, it’s irrelevant what they did before that. Besides in finals they aren’t training hard during the week, it’s making sure they are primed for the games.

I’m sure training for 3 weeks isn’t over training considering other clubs have trained for longer.

Ok we are officially in bizarro world, we’ve agreed on 2 things except for the last point, that’s not why they aren’t getting selected.

Does it make sense to criticise workers leave of a sport that you choose to follow in your spare time?

It’s a football discussion forum, the overall organisation of the league is a valid topic. Darren Burgess’ view was more games, less preseason. It’s a worthwhile discussion to have, especially considering there’s no actual footy to discuss.

Distilling it into ‘criticising workers leave’ is particularly dishonest, but not unexpected.

For what it’s worth, returning players are given an off season program on their exit meeting.

They are allowed to travel, or sit on the couch, it’s their free time away from the club.

But, during this time they are expected to be professional and for fill this program. They are expected to follow this program over the month of October and November and return in the middle of December in exceptional shape.

Then in December when the players return, clubs can hit the ground running at get the balls out for match simulation, with players expected to continue to follow that off season plan during the 3 week Christmas break.

Just seems like a strange thing to care about
Given how crucial a preseason is, I’m surprised more people don’t care about it, especially when other teams have trained for longer.

It’s more than just the fitness, skill work, goal kicking, learning new tactics, work on weaknesses, train to new rules.

Our players have trained for 3 weeks, then had 3 weeks off, seems an odd way to run a professional sport.

Oh I thought leave was standardised across teams

Minimum weeks is, teams who don’t make finals come back earlier, but you know that.

I’ve said I’m not criticising the club, but the system that demands 3 weeks off after just coming back.

Maybe I’m just being very pedantic, but it’s not really time off. It’s simply non contact hours. Or work from home for modern terminology as they are still expected to meet fitness and club standards. They don’t get 3 weeks to sit on their arse.

Reckon I’ve said this a few times, preseason isn’t just for fitness, plenty of stuff for their coaches to train them on

1-4 years players start earlier than the rest

Think you're going into this far too deep but I suppose it's the off-season.

So that’s a no, not all clubs have trained as much this preseason.

Yeah - the teams that played and trained longer during the season dont train as much in the offseason. Seems logical and normal to me. This occurs in any sporting league in the world that has a post season or playoff.

So yeah - seems another weird thing for you to be so grumpy about.

There’s a minimum break for every team before they start preseason, what they did 3 months ago seems a bit irrelevant doesn’t it, or do you think they are still tired they need another quick break?

Grumpy? I passed a comment that I think it’s weak clubs train for 3 weeks and need another 3 weeks off. You and others disagree and are debating with me, hardly makes me grumpy.

Grumpy is when we fail to win a quarter in a final which apparently isn’t important in winning finals ;)

Letting the boys head home over the Christmas & New Years break with a personalised workout schedule doesn't seem like a big deal.
We're still about 10 weeks away from round 1.

More than half of our list would probably be from interstate or country SA.

We want better interstate player retention, they're professional athletes, small things like letting them do their cardio and weights at home for a small break will help.
