All joking aside its about time the Swans brought the number 14 guernsey out of retirement and Bird sounds like the type of player who would to the fomous number justice.

yep.....i'm all for it, don't see a problem
bird's a nsw kid, yes?....seems to have laready forged a reputation (in juniors) for being fearless and hard at the ball, i think kell and skilton would approve of such characteristics

:D

-NSW boy
-Hard at it
-Talent
-Thirst to prove himself

so, yes!

(all the above are on-field ofcourse..you DON'T wanna know whats he gets up to off-field, and it doesn't matter anyway :))

Well said. I'm wrapped for the kid and I'm also happy the club held off giving the number to anyone. As you said Bird has all the traits of Kell and I cant wait for him to make his debut. He will be an instant hit!

how bout a nickname
brett burton is the birdman
craig bird is young, so he can be the Egg

Wow, obviously the kid has impressed the coaching staff.

Could be a lock in for my Dreamteam although since when have we played a first year kid.

What is your source Rancidpants as I could not find it on the swans website?

Dare I say it I have a pretty good feeling about most of our draftees and rookie listed players even though I do not have great expectations for the year.

not from me ... is he a co-captain yet?

heheheh i dont know much about the kid, but im sure they wouldnt hand that number out to any old kid, so even tho im sure he has potential, i hope the kid doesnt place too much pressure on himself - he's most likely already cleared his trophy cabinet for the numerous brownlows he's expecting =P

just wondering, why not #11? is #11 rated higher? surely not...

I already like the kid, and i've barely heard of him! I'd love to see him develop into a Maxfield/Williams type player:thumbsu:

Highly unlikely. He's not overly quick. More likely to become a Kirk type, though he's far more solidly built and his kicking is better. If he has anything close to the heart and determination of Kirk he could become a pretty decent player.

My vote goes for Thunder. I like it because people would always be asking "Why is he called Thunder?", yet once it's explained it seems so obvious.

Imagine when he kicks his first goal and the chant goes up around the ground of "Thunder!, Ar Ra Ra Ra Ra Ra, Thunder! Ar Ra Ra Ra Ra Ra, etc..." ACDC style.

Pity we don't have a super fast young guy to call Lightning as well. Maybe next draft. It's not like we're going to draft any tall guys.

Exactly right, I can't wait to see the number 14 running around again. Good luck to young Bird, I hope he is half the player of the two blokes who wore 14 before him.

He's obviously going to have plenty of pressure on him, following Kelly & Skilton, so what do the Swans do?

Yep, put out out a press release on Bird being given #14, detailing firstly the feats of Kelly & Skilton.

The Swans match committee and Board are pleased to announce that recently listed recruit Craig Bird has accepted the Clubs offer to wear the coveted no.14 guernsey for season 2008.
After five years in retirement the Swans number 14 will next year be officially presented to Craig Bird at the 2008 Sydney Swans guernsey presentation night.
The guernsey was last pulled on by Paul Kelly who first wore the no.14 in 1991, the following year he won his first Club Champion medal. He went on to win the 1995 Brownlow along with a further three Club Champion medals in a career spanning 234 games.
Kelly captained the Swans for 10 years between 1993 and 2002 when he retired. The famous no.14 guernsey was then put away as a sign of respect.
Previously Bob Skilton had made the Swans number 14 famous winning nine Club Champion awards and three Brownlow Medals in 237 games. He wore the guernsey from 1956 to 1971.
Like Kelly, Bob Skilton also captained the Swans for 10 years between 1961 and 1972 (he missed 1969 through injury). The two champions hold the top two positions as Club captains with Kelly leading the Swans in 182 games and Skilton in 165.
In 2003 Skilton and Kelly were named as captain and vice-captain of the Swans Team of the Century.
Craig Bird secured All-Australian selection for the second time after leading the NSW/ACT Rams to a championship in Division 2 of the AFL U18 championships this year. He also played in numerous reserve grade games for the undefeated Swans reserves of 2007.
“There will be the obvious, and immediate comparisons between Craig and the previous champion players which, when any number is handed on is inevitable,” coach Paul Roos said.
“In making this decision, as a Club we feel Craig can certainly go on and become a very valuable member of the Sydney Swans however, in our determination that Craig should be the one to inherit this historic number, most importantly we felt there was a very real link between Craig and the previous wearer Paul Kelly.
“The fact that Craig is the first of our NSW scholarship players to be included on the senior list is a very significant moment for this football club and the Board, the executive and the football department, along with Paul Kelly and Bobby Skilton, felt that this historic occasion should be acknowledged by offering Craig Bird the opportunity to bring the guernsey out of retirement.”

No mention on what numbers Vesp or Meredith will wear.

A more polishied Kirk then? I can live with that:D
