This thread is too long to scroll thru. Has anyone ever done a list of the mature players that have come to the club since the end of 09?? Blairs time.
At a guess there would be somewhere around 25 - 30 mature players come to the club since 09.

I would say You could count on one hand the good players. It would be great to get as many high quality players as we can. Imo we havent snared one yet. Miles may be one.
This is the problem far too many blokes we have to eventually turn over or upgrade on anyway.

I for one wonder about Blair. Unlike a kid, With these mature blokes you have a track record to judge them by. Should't we be getting most of these types of selections right.

In what way Is he shit?

He's a fierce competitor like his brothers. He wins his own ball. Has good skills. Can tag a gun and get his own ball. Kicks goals. Great tackler. Has leadership ability.
Ok, shit was a bit harsh. But to get him we'd have to overpay for a reasonable player with injury issues. Danger, Will Robinson.

I agree with everything RobsJourney says below, but here are some extra thoughts:

His skills are ok, nothing special. He doesn't kick goals - 35 in 123 games is woefully low for a midfielder. He tackles, yes, because he is always led to the ball. His best season was three years ago and he's played 13 of the last 51 games.

Guys we don't need Scott Selwood, tell me in what way is he any different to (or better than?) Miles, Dusty, the emerging Corey Ellis? Once again it would be a case of us taking another "samey" type player. If we want an inside player like him we have Miles who right now is miles (pun not intended) ahead of him. Selwood can't even get on the park either... If we want an inside player, what we need is a bigger specimen of the Jobe Watson, Andrew Swallow, Jack Ziebell ilk. I would take Joel in a heartbeat, but Scott ain't the same player.

Shiel is the player we need. A two-way running highly skilled midfielder who can win his own ball, get it plenty on the outside, tackle, and kick goals.
If we can somehow add another contested inside beast too, we will be well on track.

But look if we get Selwood for nothing he may well improve the 22 a little, but with Shiel too would there even be a place for Selwood in the best 22?

Selwood is a free agent, getting him costs us nothing more than a list spot and cap space. He is 26 next season and still has plenty of footy left in him. If we were to add him to the mix, he plays through the middle as an in and under midfielder who is also accountable, something that Dusty isn't capable of being right now and I'm not sure he is ever going to be capable of being. Corey Ellis has shown some great signs in his 2 games so far, but is still a good 2-3 years away from being at a level that Selwood has been so asking him to step up and play the role now isn't smart. As for Miles he is a quality player, but he isn't in the same mold as Selwood. Miles is 179cm & 80kg and while he doesn't mind the crash and bash it will eventually take its toll if we don't get him some real help.

Selwood is 186cm & 85kg and as mentioned is an inside ball winning accountable midfielder. If we were to add him our midfield group without adding Shiel would be: Deledio(28) Grigg(27) Edwards(27) Selwood(26) Cotchin(25) Martin(24) Miles(23) Conca(23) B.Ellis(22) McIntosh(21) Vlastuin(21) Lennon(20) Menadue(19) & C.Ellis(19). That is a 14 strong group and with a strong group like that we're able to use the likes of Deledio & Martin as forwards more often where they are a much more dangerous proposition for the opposition. Think about it, where would you rather see Dusty getting 20-25 touches, floating across HB as he does now or forward of centre where his within goal scoring range or at worse in position to put the ball deep into the F50. As we saw on Sunday, having the ability to have Deledio isolated deep forward when needed created a mismatch where he gets matches on someone like Frost or Varcoe. 9 times out of 10 I'll back Deledio to win the contest in that situation. Then there is Edwards, we've been crying out for a small forward that can be dangerous as an attacking weapon not just a defensive forward. Imagine Titch being able to rest forward in a pocket at the feet of Jack or Ty or Griffiths, with his ability in traffic and skills he would be a headache for the opposition as well.

This is what I was talking about late last week about us being able to stack our forward line with weapons that make the opposition worried about on who and how they match up. I look at sides like Hawthorn Sydney Port & even Fremantle. They don't play defensive small forwards who only get 6-7 touches and kick 1 goal every 3 weeks or so like Morris does. They play attacking weapons in their forward lines and make the opposition worry about trying to stop them. That is what we should be aiming for as we move forward. So if Shiel, who I believe is our main target was to fall through, then adding another ready to go player like Selwood wouldn't be the worse thing we could do, as long as he is passed fully fit.

Now if we were to add Shiel as well as Selwood that group of 14 becomes a group of 15: Deledio(28) Grigg(27) Edwards(27) Selwood(26) Cotchin(25) Martin(24) Miles(23) Conca(23) B.Ellis(22) Shiel(22) McIntosh(21) Vlastuin(21) Lennon(20) Menadue(19) & C.Ellis(19). All it would cost us to get something like that in place is a first round pick, perhaps even a second as well, 2 list spots & cap space. If the expected retirements/delistings take place we should be able to afford both comfortably.

Just want to clear up that the only way I'd be for getting Selwood is with a 100% clean bill of health. Do a full physical like we did with Trengove and if anything shows up walk away.

You make some very good points there. That LOOKS like a midfield to take us to the top tier.
But we thought we were top 4 bound after beating Carlton....

But anyway based on your points above if we get him on the cheap(ish) then yeah, go for it if he's 100% fully fit without any lingering concerns..
Didn't realise he was 186cm, thought he was basically Miles mkII.

I think your best point there was about making the opposition worry more about us when loading up with our attacking weapons, as opposed to the negative Morris tactic..
Imagine we did that ALL the time and then had Shiel, ok Selwood then, Vlastuin, Ellis B and Ellis C (any Ellis A we can pick up in the league somewhere?), Miles, Conca, Grigg and (McDonough??) carrying our midfield, with Cotchin Deledio Edwards and Martin spending more time forward of centre.
Plent of run off the back with Houli and Menadue, and weapons weapons weapons up forward. Actually starts to sound really bloody good.
Since I love a 22, let's just that put that here-

Batchelor - Astbury - Chaplin/Elton/Griffiths
Houli - Rance - Menadue
B Ellis - Cotchin - Shiel
Martin - Vickery - Deledio
Edwards - Riewoldt - Griffiths/McBean
Maric - Selwood - Vlastuin
Miles - C Ellis - Grigg - Conca/McIntosh

emerg/ Grimes - McDonough - Lennon

- I do actually think Vickery might make our no.1 ruck after Maric, has a future there.
- It's criminal that Lennon isn't even in the best 22...possible trade to help get Shiel over the line..?

What's our chances of him nominating us over Geelong if he is fit ?

No idea but given Geelong are likely to blow their load to get Dangerfield and are also chasing Henderson from Carlton he might not end up there

Interesting to see Dimma on the couch say that our list needed pruning.
Its so true and shows where we are atm.
We have done extremely well to get where we are atm while our rebuild was during the expansion clubs starting off.
In 2009 we where in arguably a worse spot than Melbourne. Look at us now.
Off field we are a beast. 1-2 more years with us being arround 6-10th then we will be right up there for a long time IMO.
Getting a A-grader like Sheil or Danger would be a huge bonus.
Danger would be more realistic IMO. He is a RFA so we just need to offer him shit load of cash money $$$.
Sheil has been dominating this year and is probably in AA form. We would need to give our first pick plus a good young player. To much IMO.

Agree. We cant afford to give up any of our young talent to gain more, we have to some how just keep adding to it. Sheil will cost us pucks and player. Aish would be easier to get (possibly just draft picks) because he hasn't shown as much as Sheil.
Danger would be a huge get for us!

Danger + Selwood would be amazing.
Id be happy if could get Aish + Selwood which is very realistic. If Aish nominated us I don't see why we couldn't use our first and second round picks to get him.

Don't think we will need our first and second rounder for Aish. I know he is a jet but he was a pick 6 who wants to bail so loses value. I think we will have a pick between 8-12 so I would think say pick 10 + pick 28 in exchange for Aish and Brisbane's second round pick which should be 19-22.

Shiel is going to cost a bucket load. Pick 10 + a very good young player I would have thought.

I'd be down for that only if we gave him a fair crack of consecutive games in the 1s first
Maybe those within the club see him as the next Mitch Morton. All the talent but not the desire.

True. I would rather Aish while also keeping our players and using a second round pick on another young draftee. And then go after a free agent aswell.

Selwood, Yarran, Shiel, Griffin, Aish. Any or all would be good please. Preferably 2 or more.
