Blues promote Bray
Carlton has promoted Blake Bray to the New South Wales Scholarship Rookie list.

Bray, a former junior Scholarship holder, is unavailable for senior selection in 2011 but will train with the Club on a full-time basis, further developing his football skills.

Carlton will have the opportunity to place Bray on its senior list prior to future drafts.

Bray will commence training with the Club following the 2010 Rookie Draft.

Tall forward who can take a good grab. Has immense power and speed for someone of his build.

Highlights video was quite good, nice straight kick, good leap, strong mark. Good smother and strong tackling also. Will need to go from his 9-10 touches a game to 15-20 but it looks like there's a bit to work with.

Re: Blake Bray (rookie)

So with Bray, was he eligible to be drafted this year?

I saw his name and profile amongst the other 'tall forward' options on the AFL website in the lead up to the draft and was wondering whether or not;

a) He was old enough to be drafted this year?
b) whether or not another club could pick in the ND him despite him being our junior NSW scholarship player.
c) if option b is applicable, where he would be rated in the draft?

Anyone shed any light on any of these?

Re: Blake Bray (rookie)

Hey KITC,

I'm not 100% sure, but all players eligible to be drafted are listed there. Peter Faulks was on there and was even listed as "will be taken with pick *** by Fremantle*

I think it's more a formality..

This is unfortunately the last year for the NSW scholarship program so I'm not sure what this means for Pianta and Lodge.

When a scholarship listed player reaches the minimum draft age (currently 18 years old), he can be selected by their club directly to either the senior or rookie lists, bypassing the draft process.

Handy :)

“I’m a bit stunned you could say . . . it all came as a bit of a surprise. They (Carlton’s recruiting staff) hinted to me that it might happen at the state combine, and we had a meeting in Sydney a few weeks ago where they told me . . . it was pretty cool,” Bray said.

“The plan now is to train like a draftee. It’s a 12-month thing, so I pretty much have to give 100 per cent and see where it takes me.”

“The whole family is very excited with Blake joining Carlton. AFL is not in our face all the time, we only get little snippets of it here on the news, so Carlton will be a real eye-opener for him,” Bob said.

“He’ll learn a real lot I’m sure, and the next time we see him he’ll be a little older and more the wiser.

“Blake’s got a little bit of talent. Now he’ll get good coaching and a good ethos which hopefully might lead to him getting an opportunity.”

Re: Blake Bray (rookie)

Apparently he's shrunk :confused::confused:

A 191 centimetre centre half-forward, Bray, who hails from Tahmoor about an hour’s drive southwest of Sydney, has been turning out for Western Suburbs’ seniors since his days as a 15 year-old. Now, having recently completed his HSC studies, he readies for the new phase of his footballing life, having already acquainted himself with the senior players on a whirlwind visit of the facilities last year.

Re: Blake Bray (rookie)

Specialist full forward. Words like intimidating, strapping. I like ...

We may have our forward spots well and truly wrapped up with Hendo, Mitchell and Bray in the mix in future years. Just hope at 16 he doesn't get homesick. His mother is beside herself because she doesn't want him to go.

Now an intimidating 191cm and weighing more than 80kg, the specialist full forward was named Carlton’s NSW Scholarship Rookie last week.

I don't know much about him, but it's not encouraging to hear that he's so far behind in his skills. I was hoping maybe we had found a gem in this kid.
