Wilson is a medium-sized defender with excellent disposal by either hand or foot. In 2008 he represented Western Australia at the NAB AFL Under-16 Championships, averaging 11 disposals, three marks, and three rebound 50’s. In 2009 he played in each of Western Australia’s five matches at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships and was rated as its best by his coaches. His disposal efficiency rate of 88% was elite and the highest of any player in the Under-18 All-Australian team where he was selected at full back. At WAFL level he played 12 matches for Peel Thunder Colts, averaging 17 disposals per match. He made his league debut in Round 16, he played 4 matches and averaged 13 disposals and four marks per game. AFL Prospectus

Strong, dashing, marking half-back who was an All-Australian U18 in 2009 and who’s played senior footy with Peel. Has an appealing hint of aggression. Seems suited to only one position, but he does it well. Paul Daffey

Strong-marking medium defender who reads the game very well across half-back and uses the ball effectively. Earned All-Australian honours in 2009 and was consistent for WA at under-18 level this year, averaging 18 disposals at 78 per cent efficiency and five marks. Kevin Sheehan

In his own words

What type of player are you?
A strong marking defender who can also generate run from behind.

Which AFL player do you feel you resemble, and why?
Brian Lake, because I feel I read the play like he does and can take defensive marks.

What are your strengths as a footballer?
Reading of the play, kicking skills, marking skills

What parts of your game would you like to improve?
My tackling pressure, speed and endurance.

Which AFL team do you support and how did you come to barrack for them?
Fremantle because I have just grown up going for them.

Who has been the biggest influence on your career so far, and why?
Dad has always been there helping, giving me advice and pushing me on.

Does anyone know what his speeds at draft camp were like?

on the afl site, paul daffey had him possibly being taken as a rookie, cant believe that will happen.

That would be the Steal of the Draft if he was Drafted in the Rookie Draft.

Speed queries or not, I'd be very surprised if he lasts until the rookie draft. Good marking and kicking skills, too much there to work with to fall that far.

I think he'll do well in a 'quarterback' role, mopping up kicks inside defensive 50 taking marks in the hole, then distributing efficiently.
Shannon Hurn isn't blessed with that much pace (although probably more than Wilson, Hurny has a bit of toe when he needs it), but he still excels in that role.

i was thinking the same thing, i was very impressed with blayne last year, and thought he would grow a bit and become a handy third tall.

still think his kicking skills are up there with the best and i think his reading of the game will make up for his lack of pace.

That's exactly how I would have described him too.

Despite the athletic queries, I think he definitely could succeed at AFL level in this role, and if someone does indeed get him in the rookie draft, they'll find it was a bargain success down the track.

Could get exposed if he ends up in one on ones but as a rebounder and third man up at marking contests I think he could really be a player. He may not be pacy but he should definitely be able to get to contests in the backline. He could play a similar type of game to the backline version of Hodge.

Agree, I see him as being ideal for an Enright type role (probably without the defensive skills that Enright has though) because he reads the play extremely well, is a good (and courageous) mark for his size and can penetrate by foot. The last part in particular, given the way the game is going with zones etc, is very appealing, so even if there's some question marks on him with speed/athleticism, I still reckon he's an AFL player, it's just a matter of a club moulding a role for him that maximises those strengths while minimising the exposure of his weaknesses.

Will be really surprised if he doesn't go somewhere in the top 70.

Originally after watching this kid I wanted the Tigers to consider him at 30. Speed is one part of the game but not all. He seems tough and a magical kick.....would be stoked to get him at pick 47 or 50.

Pace is a sought after commodity these days, which may be unfortunate for Blayne. He may end up this year's Joe Dare?
