Heard on SEN from Mike Sheehan that Walsh is one of those players that is a once in a generational player that you have no risk in ' not making it ' at AFL level. Very low risk/high reward type. I'd rather use pick one on him than get Shiel who's about as good as he's gonna get (yes he's good but arguably not elite).

Lol did he say those words?

I'm so sick of hearing it, you hear it about multiple players every year when 'once in a generation player' should mean you you don't describe another player the same way for at least 12 years...because you know, that mean they aren't 'once in a generation'.

If its a joke one ought to put a grin or similar..its simple and saves misinterpretation

Yes he could have...though i think the ridiculousness of expecting a nomination between 12-12:30am makes it obvious enough it's a joke.
Then again you do get some people with strange expectations on here!

from the article 'Carlton, who finished with just two wins to claim their fifth wooden spoon since 2002, had earlier this year ruled out applying for a priority pick, publicly saying that they had got themselves into their position and they would work to get themselves out of it. The Blues later changed their tune however, softening their position on the matter.'

What a load of bollocks. No such things were said at all. There was words to say it hasnt been considered as its not the time for that and we believe we have a talented young list.

The media nowadays simply doesnt even bother to speak the truth. And no-one says a damn thing about it.

The AFL Commission's primary objective is not to have the Blues win a flag or even make the finals, but not lose by 10+ goals half the time and only win two matches all year.

Given those objectives, access to 1-3 state league players makes sense as a solution going forward for cases like ours. In my opinion our season warrants 3 such players and GCS 2 such players.

The elegance to the solution is that the AFL isn't directly handing out picks - it is allowing the same pick be recycled and an auction could get us decent value. For example last year Geelong used pick 24 for Kelly, and West Coast used Pick 26 for Liam Ryan. Carlton was probably going to use Pick 30 on Kelly and WCE probably had in mind 26 for Kelly and 32 for Ryan. In an open auction if Carlton had first rights to Kelly then we may have had West Coast use their pick 21 instead for Kelly to outbid the Cats Pick 24. But the Cats may have really wanted him and willing to do Pick 24 plus exchange third rounders with us.

The unknown is whether in this example say the Cats and Eagles both had 18 year olds they were keen on who ended up being taken which is why they settled for Kelly. In that case they may not be willing to pay a premium for him and instead roll the dice and see how the draft plays out.

It seems we will only get 1-2 state league players as per these news reports. That may not be enough to do all the trades we (on here, who knows what SOS wants) want - we may simply not have enough currency for Shiel, McGovern, Setterfield, Brodie, Scrimshaw etc. But I would argue had we got 3 state leaguers we may have had enough currency to get it all done and still keep Pick One this year.

Final point - giving a bottom team state league player access only helps if they use it for mature talent. If the club chooses to trade all of them for say second rounders and bring in 18 year olds then they will likely remain at the bottom and not win many games. In our case I don't think the AFL minds if Carlton finishes 18th again next year, They instead want us to win say 5 matches and competitive in say 18 matches. 5 wins could still be 18th place next season but at least it won't adversely impact their ratings and attendances as much.

Also not sure why people think giving up next year's first round Pick for Shiel will only cost us Pick 5-6. It's hard to see us getting more than 6 wins and we can expect to see improvement from the Lions and probably the Saints so we will still end up being in the 16th-18th range even with 6 wins. Freo was 14th with 8 wins (Pick 5) and Crows were 12th with 12 wins. There's a huge gap between 2 wins and 8 wins so a significant gap between 14th and 18th hence between Picks 1 and 5. So Shiel will likely cost us between Picks 1 and 3. Since GWS will know this hopefully they agree to include Setterfield in it.
