If you had a pick would you pick LOB or Richards?
I think it’s a no brainer.

Agree totally that Richard's has taken to AFL quicker than LOB at present.

But here is my point, and why these sort of comparisons shit me to tears.
No-one can make a definitive judgement on this Richards/O'Brien argument for at least another few seasons yet.

It's like the whole 'Stocker trade', it creates interest to talk about it, debate the trade, but in reality, it wont be seen as a success/failure for at least a few seasons.

Now you may end up being correct, but the Richards/Obrien selection is the same mate.

I’m not writing LOB off yet by any means but based on current evidence I think it’s fair to say Richards would have been the better choice for us.

Hard to believe Sos would have not chosen Richards based on being late for one meeting though. You’d like to think there was more to the decision than that.

My understanding that Richards was definitely front of mind. Being late might have been the tipping point for decision...

As for the info re ‘Grammar’ (Melb and Geelong) it’s definitely a measurement that is used by recruiters but with the country background and the connection between the 2 it made sense to pick them.

SOS would have been asked that question no doubt but as we all know hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I think you might have hit it on the head with the words “insight in to the ... PERSON”.
SOS can be a bit too middle class in his assessment of the person, I suspect.

If Richards was, at some stage, our preferred No 2 pick that shouldn’t have changed!

Btw Richards played well against Brisbane today, kicking two early goals when Brisbane were in the lead.
Leave it out with this crap.
Your name is denigrating a legend by the way.

Pity that we were covered for forwards coz Naughton would also have been a great pick up.
The Bulldogs did well in that draft with Naughton and Richards
Next time you make up stories on the internet i'd appreciate some character development and perhaps a plot twist.

Maybe you should tell it that your source could have met you in a dark alleyway and gave you the information in a manila folder.
Then later on it's revealed that it was Mitch Robinson feeding you the intel, selling stories for Fortnight cash.

My inside info didn’t include Higgins. I was going with the flow of the thread when I mentioned Higgins.
My point remains this. We should have taken Richards, not LOB. My info is that the Board discussion included LOB and Richards. Not Higgins.
It also included a query as to why two Geelong Grammar boys were selected. Grammar boys are not known for their hardness!
SOS chose to characterise them as country boys. They both come from the Albury Riverina area from memory.
Do you think the issue might have been SOS hadn’t changed the batteries in his crystal ball, and was reduced to only using his magic 8 ball.

Also ... do you see love in Thy’s future? And can you please pm me Tuesday nights powerball numbers. Much appreciated!

This is my first post.
I have it on good authority that the Board asked SOS to explain why two Geelong Grammar boys (Dow and O’Brien) were picked at 3 and 10 in the 2017 draft. SOS said that they are really country boys (not capital G Grammar boys) and any suggestion of Grammar boy softness was wrong.

I’m also told that he explained the failure to recruit Ed Richards (who went at 15 or 16 to the Dogs) on the ground that he turned up 45 mins late to his interview. So what! He was 17 or just 18 and had a good reason for being late.

We now know that Richards is a better player and prospect than O’Brien.

Is SOS a bit middle class in his thinking?

We need more mongrels. In picking Stocker I think SOS might have started to learn his lesson.
Stocker has a touch of arrogance and some Mongrel.

Pity we can’t reverse the O’Brien selection.

I doubt that!

Ok. It’s good to hear that you support SOS but you can still be critical and SOS has an obligation to exercise good judgment.
The evidence, and my instinct, tells me that he got it wrong with LOB. My understanding is that the Board suspects that as well.
I think that Richards is obviously a better player than LOB. If I’m right Richards future prospects are better than LOBs.

So which is it.

You have it on good authority or your instinct & understanding!

Over and out!

No it is good authority. I can’t identify the source but given the content of my post you can infer which part of the club my source belongs to.
The Gardiner Stand?

With LOB, he was at Geelong Grammar on scholarship. Mildura boy. Not accurate to cast him as some inner city south-eastern surburbs boy who has had life handed to him. Has worked very hard to get where he’s at.

Not sure about Dow’s background, but he certainly doesn’t look soft on the field.

First reaction to a rumour like that shouldn't be to defend whether people from a certain school are "hard" enough, but to question why on earth Carlton board members would ask such ******ed questions and therefore question their fitness to make insightful and well-considered decisions that affect the club.

My first reaction is to laugh it off as a clear troll.

I'm trying to express my thoughts on basically writing off a 19 year old kid who has had some early second year woes.

I might just let a certain J. Silvagni and D.Cuninghan make that argument for me this week.

Not all kids develop at the same rate. Nor do recruiters often pick the player who ends up being better than all who follow.

Still a good chance LOB ends up a fine player for us imo.

You don't pick draftees for what you think they are now

LOB has way more upside than Richards, who is also a good player

Tell your source, a banana that ripens first, doesn't mean it will be better

I keep going back to this; One doesn't always need one that may ultimately be deemed to be the better player as much as getting the right type.

If we were to compare, the positions they were brought into play should come into account.
i.e. Did we need a wingman or a running/rebounding HBF'er, more?

Whichever way though, I'm far from unhappy about O'Brien.
Reckon we'll be the better player when allowed to use his skills and not play the.....'decoy' :)
