Bring on a higher draft pick than we'd expect.

There would have to be some major concerns about Lennon now. He looks very talented with ball in hand but is clearly still lacking the gut-running ability required for AFL and is now in his third year. A year younger than Menzel, so I guess you can't put a line through him yet, but he really is at the stage where he should be getting some regular games.

Only seems to perform in the final quarters when the game opens up. They need more from him when the games hot and heavy in the first half. Its great he bobs up at the end but its a 4 quarter game and its no different to a guy starting strong and fading out of the game.

Love hearing the rumours but sometimes the less you hear with rumours coming out of the club the better as it portrays a tight ship IMO

In the space of 10 rounds we have become a destination players will want to go to. Last years trade period, with respect to the players we picked up, were discards, unable to get opportunity or unproven injury prone players. What Bolton (and everyone involved) has achieved in 10 weeks, players will want to get involved. It really is a "build it and they will come" in terms of culture and when you do that and players name you as destination of choice all of a sudden you aren't bidding and upping the price to get that player, the value required to get said player is driven down. It really does feel like the base has been set now and I predict our ascent will only continue during the off season.

I really like the idea. It doesn't unnecessarily punish teams for 'trying' or overly reward teams for one bad season.

Isnt the current system based on wins and losses?

And how else would you suggest to offer up draft picks?

In other sports they use toughness of fixture (determined after the season coz it's impossible to accurately predict beforehand) and % to help determine draft order.

Those 2 things combined with performance over past 3 years would give us an accurate measure of a teams strength and needs.

We need to start dictating our own terms though. We're not quite ready for big name recruits, as far as the rebuild is concerned, although if somebody made it known that they wanted to come here, it would be hard to completely dismiss it. The problem is if they are looking for a big pay day at the same time. Need to be firm that we won't be dishing out massive contracts just to lure a player. If you want to buy in, it's going to cost you, even if that means knocking back a good player or two that won't agree to our terms.

Draft position should be a bit easier to predict late in the season, as there will be less likelihood of one game and some percentage determining a slide or climb of 3-4 positions. This enables clubs to plan more effectively as the end of the season approaches.

Furthermore, a fringe team that finishes 8th after a few years of mediocrity and then lucks out in finals (eg. opposition injury) isn't unrealistically treated as a top 2-4 side come draft time.

And to cap it all off - if (heaven forbid) there was a repeat of the Essendon situation, you wouldn't see a club missing some key players for one year being rewarded with the number 1 pick.

Tanking was only an issue when you got an extra 1st round draft pick. The difference between pick 1 and pick 3 or 4 is on average fairly low. Any other systems creates as many problems they solves.

If a club thinks losing games to get pick 1 over pick 3 is the answer, they will get the future they deserve. Just ask Melbourne how it worked out for them. What is it 10 years since finals?

I would only target players that would be able to play 200 games. Players like Marchbank/Tomlinson & Mitchell although Mitchell has been on a very lucrative contract and might be unwilling to take a pay cut. We are not ready to trade for short term fixes.

I don't rate Mitchell as anything more than a good solid midfielder - he isn't a match winner he doesn't have the pace of Murphy or the creative talent of Gibbs. He isnt a Hannerbury/Parker/Kennedy what he does for Sydney is give them a good solid rotation - he would cost too much and add too little to us.

What I am saying is that teams that think that getting a couple of low picks will solve there problem re on the wrong track.

So under this system a team on the way down like Freo wouldn't get low draft picks before being supported for several years? So chances are they will spend longer down the bottoms being uncompetitive before getting extra help on the way up.

Last year The bullies would get a top ten pick due to having 3 bad years previously.

We have had 2 sides bottom out and bounce back quickly. 1 the Pies and half of that was the pp and FS selections the other the Eagles and that was mainly from the Judd Trade .

We're we punished for beating the Tigers in the 13 EF? Middle teams just need to get there drafts right. It is not like 2010-2012 where compromised drafts held teams like Carlton Efc or the Tigers back

Pies traded out 3 premiership players to get 5 first round drafts to then get 1 average ruckman.

Systems other than the current one would be too complicated and will throw up just as many unfair situations.

What the first half of the season has done is made us more of a destination club. Players will look at what's happening at Princes Park and want to be a part of it.
