From this quote;
2004:
National Draft:
Pick #9 - Jordan Russell
Pick #25 - Adam Hartlett
Pick #41 (F/S) - Luke Blackwell
Pick #73 - Chris Bryan
Pick #77 - Anthony Raso
PS Draft:
Pick #3 - Eddie Betts
Decent year considering what else was taken, probably a few too many misses.
2005:
National Draft:
Pick #1 - Marc Murphy
Pick #4 - Josh Kennedy
Pick #20 - Paul Bower
Pick #36 - Jake Edwards
PS Draft:
Pick #1 - Dylan McLaren
Rookie Draft:
Pick #1 - Ryan Jackson
Pick #17 - Craig Flint'
Exceptional year. Couldn't turn over more players nor use any more picks in the ND other than the 4 above due to the club not having enough money to pay players. This is the sort of thing WH had to deal with.
2006:
National Draft:
Pick #1 - Bryce Gibbs
Pick #17 - Shaun Hampson
Pick #19 - Shaun Grigg
Pick #35 - Mark Austin
Pick #51 - Clint Benjamin
Pick #67 - Joe Anderson
PS Draft:
Pick #1 - Cain Ackland
Rookie Draft:
Pick #1 - Sam Jacobs
Pick #17 - Michael Jamison
Pick #32 - Ross Young
If you can pick 3 best 22 players in a year, you've got a full team in 7 years - I say he's picked up a 10 year FB and Ruck (at this stage). That's pretty good. Hampson could still be anything, the club has a tonne of faith in Austin pending injuries, and the only gripe was not choosing Selwood, but that was never going to happen.
2007:
National Draft:
Pick #1 - Matthew Kruezer
Pick #36 - Steven Browne
Pick #46 - Dennis Armfield
PS Draft:
Pick #2 - Darren Pfeiffer
Rookie Draft:
Pick #2 - Aaron Joseph
Pick #18 - Lachie Hill
Pick #34 - David Ellard
Pick #48 - Michael Shields
Aaron Joseph and Dennis Armfield two quality late picks. Another decent year. Nothing too special.
2008:
National Draft:
Pick #6 - Chris Yarran
Pick #40 - Mitch Robinson
Pick #65 - Rhys O'Keeffe
Pick #80 - Caleb Tiller
PS Draft:
Pick #4 - Chris Johnson
Rookie Draft:
Pick #6 - Jeff Garlett
Pick #22 - Luke Stanton
Pick #37 - Greg Bentley
Pick #51 - Darren Pfeiffer (Re-drafted)
Pick #65 - Lachie Hill (Re-drafted)
Jury is still out, but to have unearthed a 40 goal a year forward pocket from the rookie draft is a credit to WH. Doesn't warrant further analysis as things can change so quickly for players at this age. Make a Yarran v. Rich poll this year
.
Basically in 5 years he has built a list from scratch, and has been fortuitous in landing Judd. Bolded are 18 players that would pretty much land a complete squad and many of them are nowhere near their potential. Gibbs, Murphy and Kreuzer have all had down years yet we still finish in the 8. Yarran and Grigg in and out of the team.
We'll leave 2009 as too early to tell as well.
Hughes was brought in as the head of recruiting at Carlton in 2004
