Apologies if this has already been done, but I thought it would be interesting to see how we've compiled our current senior team over the years in Drafts and Trading.

Here is a list of 27 players that makes up our senior team in various forms:

B: M.Jamison B.Thornton P.Bower
HB: A.Walker J.Waite H.Scotland
C: K.Simpson N.Stevens A.Carrazzo
HF: B.Gibbs A.Hartlett R.Houlihan
F: B.Fisher B.Fevola E.Betts
Foll: M.Kreuzer C.Judd M.Murphy
I/C from: C.Cloke J.Bannister S.Grigg D.Pfieffer R.Hadley

S.O'hAilpin J.Russell S.Hampson A.Bentick

Here is a breakdown of which years we managed to snaffle these players:

1998
National Pick #38 – Brendan Fevola

1999
National Pick #73 – Ryan Houlihan

2000
None

2001
National Pick #46 – Jarrad Waite
Rookie #11 – Bret Thornton

2002
National Pick #45 – Kade Simpson
National Pick #72 – Brad Fisher

2003
National Pick #2 – Andrew Walker
National Pick #69 – Jordan Bannister
Preseason #2 – Nick Stevens
Rookie #2 – Andrew Carrazzo
Rookie #34 – Adam Bentick
Rookie #62 – Setanta O’Hailpin

2004
National Pick #9 – Jordan Russell
National Pick #25 – Adam Hartlett
Rookie #3 – Eddie Betts

2005
Pick #1 – Marc Murphy
Pick #20 – Paul Bower

2006
National Pick #1 – Bryce Gibbs
National Pick #17 – Shaun Hampson
National Pick #19 – Shaun Grigg
Preseason #9 – Cameron Cloke
Rookie #17 – Michael Jamison

2007
National Pick #1 – Matthew Kruezer
Preseason #2 – Darren Pfeiffer

Trades in
Chris Judd
Heath Scotland
Richard Hadley

Some observations:

Good:
- 18 of the 27 players were picked up after 2003....good sign that we are getting games into our youngsters (not that we have much choice )

- 2003 and 2006 look to be the pick of the years. Getting Stevens and Carrazzo for nothing in 2003 made up for the penalties that year

- We got 5 of our KPPs for cheap picks (Fev, Waite, Fish, T-Bird and Jamo)

- The players we got out of trades are pretty handy :thumbsu:

Bad

- As is obvious from where we sit we are really missing a core group of 150+ game players.....we probably needed another 5 players from the 1998 to 2002 drafts

- Year 2000 - Annus Horribilis - we had picks 4, 11, 15 and 31 and got NOTHING

Thoughts ?

Makes me cringe everytime i think about that year

4. Livingston
11. Sporn
15. Wiggins
31. ??? i dont think we had that pick

12. Shaun Burgoyne
14. Daniel Harris
18. Daniel Kerr
20. Kane Cornes
50. Domenic Cassisi
56. Daniel Cross
67. Graham Johncock

WE certainly have done well with our later picks and elevated rookie listed players though

Exactly. I shudder still at how we managed to not get one player out of the top 30 in 2000.

Player who we could have picked in the top 30(we had picks 4, 11, 15):

8 Daniel Motlop
9 Kayne Pettifer
10 Jordan McMahon
12 Shaun Burgoyne
14 Daniel Harris
16 Scott Thompson
18 Daniel Kerr
20 Kane Cornes
22 Richard Hadley
23 Drew Petrie
24 Luke Ablett
25 Mark Coughlin
29 Jamie Charman

Meh!

Livingston was an AA forward as a junior, so he wouldn't have been overlooked by with a top ten pick if we had picked another player at four. Angwin was arguably as talented as the top three players taken in the 2000 draft, but the headcase was still taken at seven ahead of some guns.

Angwin was a better kick than Riewoldt on the run and had better mobility and more upside than Kosi.

I reckon the 201cm and high leaping Angwin would be as hard to stop as Franklin if he had Kreuzer's attitude.

He snapped one Dean Cox running goal from 50 and another from the pocket against WCE.

Freak show.

Charman was a zone selection and wasn't in the draft.

The draft process and the quality of the kids coming through now is incredible compared to past drafts when you have more athletic talls in the system. Last year's draft and the 2005 draft weren't as weak as everyone thought they would be when Pears can play and Browne has been good in the VFL.
my bad wikipedia said that kangaroos had that pick. but your right :thumbsu:

another disastrous pick :(
Campbell had a bad back injury and was a quickish defender who could kick.

That wasn't a stuff up when the odds of getting a player with a second round pick was hit and miss back then.

Quite seriously, I reckon Angwin had more talent in his little finger than 95% footballer playing the game today. He could have been anything had he had his head in the right place. A real shame.

Comparison with the top 27 from Geelong. We really need to stop getting caught up in poor drafting from 7 years ago. It happens to all teams. Mooney and Ottens were two big trades for the Cats.

Note that of their best 27 currently, Scarlett, Ablett, Blake and Hawkins are father/son selections. We have Waite.

100% spot on. If I think about what might have been too much I get a regret rash. Goddamn.

2004 draft put us back a few years when we had momentum. Maybe Libba and Pagan were taking drugs with Angwin..?

Angwin was the one that stuffed us up. He shoulda waited until he was like Ben Cousins before becoming a screwed up drug brogen.

We have ended up with No. 22 - R.Hadley and No.47 J.Bannister from the 2000 draft. Noticed our 31 pick could have obviously scored us No.33 - a man who played in 3 premierships
Apart from the Hawks, 2004 has proved to be an ordinary draft for most and at this point in time nothing much after No.5/7 has set the footy world alight. The fact that the Hawks scored 3 goodies in such a poor year is why they are firing now.

Wouldn't he have just. The kid had the talent to be anything. Why anyone would be a nothing ________ rather than knuckle down and take a fabulous opportunity we can only wonder. I hope I had more brains when I was 20.

He was going to the Q Bar and scoring chicks coz he was a fotballer with money, but they're all on E's so he got caught up in it.
