Michael Long would be another great option.
Longy was the obvious option to me, given the whole thing with The Long Walk (which I think is technically part of Essendon anyway?) and then he's got his foundation and things like that, so experience with both the executive in a non-profit org and would have been in reasonably close contact with the club.

I had no idea Dean was president of the Tiwi Bombers though, which makes him similarly credentialed.

I guess the main consideration for either of them is whether they'd be local enough to attend board meetings – assuming it isn't all on zoom. I think Longy is in the NT most of the year isn't he? Probably Dean is too if he's president of the Tiwi Bombers.

Looking at Riolis LinkedIn, he seems to have a heap of board and corporate advisory experience outside of football and for non profits as well.

Being based in the Tiwi would be a massive benefit though, with it being a part of the NGA for us and our association with the Tiwi bombers.

It would mean he'd have some pretty on-the-ground insight into how well our Tiwi academy type programs are going. Not just superficial go there once a year and hand out twenty footballs and go home again.

It's harder for the people on the ground to bullshit you if you're there and can see the impact you're making (or not) with your own eyes

A hyper neglected aspect to be sure, quite possibly the most neglected aspect

When he was fit and going, he was smooth as silk. Could seriously play.
He was magnificent. His body let him down. I hate talking about one particular game, but that ‘99 prelim, the football we played in the third quarter was as good as it gets. Dean Rioli orchestrated that quarter.

I don't think we saw him consistently produce to his full capabilities. I wonder how good he could have been if he had a better run with injuries and got himself into peak fitness.

I say this with a straight face and total belief: Dean Rioli would of won a Brownlow medal if his body didn't fail him.

The only bitter moment of GF '00 was Dean in tears because he missed the win with shot hammies.

As gifted as any player over that period.
Always thought at the time, his talent & Mark Bolton athleticism & build and he’d be an all-time great.
