Same role ;)

McPherson seems like a good appointment. One year at North before the Clarkson broom came through but was at Melbourne from 2014 to 2021 starting as an assistant coach.
Before that he was with Sydney in a few roles including their VFL coach in 2010. He has seen a lot during his time from the very good to the very bad so he should have a decent handle on things. Coming through the Swans culture as a player is a good thing.

As far as the development roles go I think there will be some more to come. The have filled the top two development roles (head of development / VFL coach ) from within so I think their is likely to be another to go with Hurley who has filled one of the minor roles.

edit - forgot about Cloke. So it appears that the minor roles will be filled by Hurley , Cloke and Stanton.

This was the North announcement when he was appointed.
Has a link with us going back a few years as well.

See above.
McPherson is a very good operator who was at Melbourne and Sydney for a long time. He was at North for one season and had zero time to do anything other than report to Rawlings how bad their system actually was.
Roberts started with us in Dec 2019 and has basically had to operate in a Covid bubble since he has been with us with limited resources. All reports are he is a good communicator and I have not heard anything bad about him coming from within. The issues with our recent development has been lack of actual staff forcing the number of hours spent with players being less.
This is a savvy appointment.

This club is finally showing signs it’s heading in the right direction.

For posterity (so I can add the link to the stickied timeline)

Dan McPherson appointed as General Manager of Performance
McPherson joins Essendon from North Melbourne where he was General Manager of Football Performance for the 2022 AFL Season. Prior to North Melbourne, he led the football operations at Melbourne including the AFL, AFLW, VFL and VFLW programs. His work at Melbourne contributed significantly to their AFL Premiership in 2021.

McPherson will report directly to Josh Mahoney and will be responsible for driving and aligning the important performance functions of coaching and physical performance for the AFL program.

General Manager of Football Josh Mahoney said McPherson brings a wealth of experience and success to Essendon.

“Dan has high-level experience as both a player and football administrator, is a great football person and highly respected throughout the industry. We’re all very excited to have him join the Bombers and lead a key part of our football program,” Mahoney said.

“He’s had a lot of success driving winning football programs across men’s and women’s football and he understands what it takes to build a successful team off-field.”

“Dan was the standout candidate to join the Bombers.”

Cam Roberts appointed as Head of Development
The appointment of Cam Roberts to Head of Development further strengthens Essendon’s coaching team.

Roberts brings a wide range of experience working both in football and the corporate world. Roberts joined Essendon in 2019 from Melbourne University Blacks Football Club in the Victorian Amateur Football Association where he was their head coach. Since 2019 he has been the VFL Senior Assistant Coach and Development Coach at Essendon.

Roberts will lead a program aimed at improving all Essendon players ensuring they thrive and reach their full potential. He will manage the development team which includes newly appointed coaches Michael Hurley, Travis Cloke and Brent Stanton for our list focusing on skill development and football craft.

His understanding and passion for welfare will assist in his role having worked closely with the Bombers’ 1-4 year players.

“We have been impressed with Cam’s contribution to Essendon and this new coaching structure will support him to best progress our players. He shares a similar philosophy to Brad Scott on the development of players and have been impressed with his commitment and determination to getting the best out of all players,” Mahoney said.

“Cam’s life and coaching experiences, relationships, positive attitude, and planning processes, made him a perfect candidate for this role and we look forward to Cam heading up a great group of development coaches and pulling together a program that improves all Essendon players.”

what an absolutely utensil head.

edit - whilst I was referring specifically to Thorburn in this instance, the “utensil head” comment applies equally to McClure.

What has one got to do with the other?
Presumably a thorough process the first time would've meant we had formed and interviewed a shortlist of qualified candidates and the replacement would've been a more expedited timeline.

At the moment, it seems very much like we did little/no serious work on this front prior to 'miraculously' realising at the eleventh hour that the one we wanted (Thorburn) was right in front of us all along.

Can't see how this is going to be good for him. He might get a couple of hundred k in an out of court settlement but his reputation is going to get trashed even more. You just can't discriminate against people the way his church does and get away with it anymore.

Kind of hope the club defends itself and wins. We need court wins against these churches so they change.

Doubt it, its at rock bottom anyway.

The first process was run by EY and certainly seemed to involve multiple highly credentialed candidates. It then went awry with Thorburn interviewing others before removing himself from the process and being interviewed as a candidate with the knowledge of what others had pitched.

It’s not the end of the world that he was involved early IF the people involved are doing their jobs properly and we end up with the right candidate.

However they then recommended someone who had a fiduciary duty to an organisation with conflicting values, and if they missed that, what else did they miss?

The second process isn’t being done by EY, but it is again outsourced, and the people who were candidates the first time aren’t necessarily willing to be involved again even if EY isn’t. So they seem to have started from scratch.

You can read more into it, but concluding that Thorburn was headhunted involves assumptions that aren’t currently in evidence.

I think the issue will be that HE has a proven track record of not discriminating against people but was terminated for being part of a church that did in 2013 and has backed away from those claims.

Having said that I thought he resigned. Must want to make a freedom of speech statement out of the case

NAB flicked him for being ******* dodgy. He somehow gets on our external review posse and gets every employee to open themselves up to him. He sits on the panel to select our next CEO (knowing all the secrets) and thinks hang on “ I’m the best one for the job, it’s me, it’s me”
* off son.

bizarre defense

Only because you expected it to be a defence.
yes! you surprised me with the well thought out and reasoned first paragraph! and then things turned.

Actually, you CAN discriminate against whoever you want, as long as it's not enshrined in law. You can discriminate about who you are friends with, who you let into your house etc. Churches can discriminate (just like you can in your personal life), and are allowed to do so. And if you don't like it, then you don't have to be part of that church.

Kind of hope the club defends itself and wins. We need court wins against these churches so they change.
The club unfortunately deserves to be sued IMO. We discriminated against someone and broke the law by doing so. There is no evidence whatsoever that any of his private views impacted his ability to do his job, and in fact I believe NAB did some work for the LGBTQ community while he was there.

You can make an argument that he was the wrong person for the job anyway (which is irrelevant), but the facts are that upon choosing him, he was then given an ultimatum based on him being part of a church that clearly had no impact on his ability to do his job.

Tolerance and freedom of speech only matters if you are tolerant of views you don't agree with. Everyone is tolerant of views they agree with. And being tolerant of different views does not mean endorsement of those views, which is something too many people don't understand.

Horrible take. Running a bank is totally different to running a football club, apples and oranges. His (the views of the church he is the head of) views are against the ethos of a football club. Again the problem wasn’t his religion, it was that he a significant role within the church.
