Borg: "Rafa will win Wimbledon in 2008"
September 07 || 07

Speaking at the Blackrock Tour of Champions, Swedish tennis legend, Bjorn Borg has been talking up Rafa's chances of winning Wimbledon in 2008 and analysing his matches with Roger Federer at SW19. The pair have met in the final the previous two tournaments, with this year's encounter being particularly outstanding with Federer just edging it in five sets.

"I was happy to be there, to watch the final", Borg commented, reflecting on the 2007 final. "It was a great final, they played unbelievably good tennis. Rafa was a little bit unlucky, maybe, not to win the final. He had a couple of chances to break Roger's serve in the fifth set. If he breakthe serve, maybe the outcome will be different."

So impressed with Rafa's performances at the All England Club is Borg that he predicted: "If I had to pick a winner for next year's Wimbledon I would pick Nadal, actually. I think he's really ready to win Wimbledon." And that, coming from a five time Wimbledon champ is as solid a prediction as you're going to get!

I still recon it will be 2009 or 2010 that Nadal will win Wimbledon. Cannot see him winning it with a poor serve (not big enough, needs to "pop" his serve more often).

actually if you saw him properly at wimbledon he made an adjustment on grass. Even federer found it extremely difficult to break his serve. Not pace, but he concentrated on placement and had an open stance compared to his shoulder on stance on clay. The reason he was only broken a few times at wimbledon is taking pace of the ball (resulted in fewer aces and high first serve percentage) but that paid dividends cause that set up his forehand perfectly well. Can you believe federer unable to secure a break up for 4 sets against rafa??

Its kinda like agassi, his serve i believe was lethal although he served at 115 mph. Pace is not the key, its how you set up your groundies is the key.I believe rafa had more groundstroke winners than AYNONE he played this year at wimbledon is because of his serve. Not saying that i am correct, however food for thought, when someone like rafa has 10 more groundstroke winners than someone like Federer

Yes I can beleive Federer didn't break Nadal, as Federer had been playing poorly all tournament (didn't play a warmup game either). Like it or not Federer had his worst preparation for a slam ever! I still believe Nadal has to shorten points more regularly. Now whether that be by hitting the ball flatter or by serving quicker (on occasions) that is up to him. He does need to use his "big" serve a bit more- I have seen him serve up to 220km, he needs to use it a bit more at least!

Federer had more ground winners, he played a full semi final remember.

Federer did not play poorly. 35 unforced errors from a big hitter like federer in a 5 set match is poor? i refuse to believe that. Plus federer is ALWAYS nervous when he plays rafa.Rafa works on trying to break federers game down, ffs give some credit to rafa instead of saying federer played poorly. All the 11 matches they have played, federer played poorly then? Rafas gameplan to break the opponents game down and he does that to federer ever so successfully

Federer did not have more groundstroke winners. Rafa had 49 groundstroke winners to federers 40 groundstroke winners (in the finals)

Nadal has the capability, so it's no big stretch to say that he will win it. If he can trouble Federer on grass then he can do it again.

Still a matter of personal opinion really. I can go out and claim that Djokovich can win it (and he can), and my opinon will still be as valid (unless I say Hewitt ... but then again, the top seeds can injure themselves or be run over by Federer's cow ;)).

no it wont, come back when nole wins a set against federer in grand slams. Rafa knows feds vulnerability and matching fed on grass court is not something anyone has done over the past 5 years.

What the hell do you mean it won't? Stop bullshitting.

Djokovich also has the ability to win it, we all know it. He can win it, and so can Nadal. Either way, they're both predictions and both assumptions and not actual facts, hence why they are as valid as each other.

Pretty much spot on! TP everyone knows Nadal is a talent, however to say he'll win Wimbledon in 2008 is a guess, no more, no less. I'll be banking on the bloke who has won 5 Wimbledon's in a row though to win his 6th!

but he has not proven himself on grass.

And Nadal has? Don't give me the rubbish about more winners rubbish, Nadal hasn't won a grass tournament either!

so you reckon 2 wimbledon finals are not enough? he went down fighting to the man virtually unbeatable on grass. There is no shame in losing to federer on grass, whoelse has beaten rafa on grass??????

Maybe so, but fact remains both he and Djokovic have not won a grass tournament. Both of them might beat Federer on grass. Who knows, who will win a Wimbledon? That is a absolute guess. But it is just that..a guess, nothing more, nothing less.

rafa was stopped by the king of grass while nole lost to rafa on grass

Yes rafa won by forfeit..and nole was ahead you know!

so?? nole almost got beaten in the last match and he had 2 massive 5 set matches against 2 ordinary blokes. Rafa would have beaten him anyway. Plus rafa had one of the hardest draws, he beat his nemesis, the likes of youzhny, berdych. Plus it was 1 set all when nole started to tire  if there was no federer rafa woulda been 2 time wimbledon champion by now.

if he is irrelevant, what are you?? amazing how bigfooty armchair experts claim to know more about tennis than 5 time wimbledon champion.

just because he is a tennis legend doesn't give him license to talk unadulterated crap. his opinion is just that, an opinion, no better or worse than mine.

you know what they say about opinions and assholes?

borg is 100% hoping fed doesn't break his Open record.

No he isnt. Borg is a champion and he is a very nice person in real life.I met him in 2004 wimbledon and he said that federer will break his record cause he looks like the best player he has ever seen.Funny how you comment on people when you dont even know them

So what..and nole had a easy Wimbedon draw..could have fooled me..he beat Hewitt a Wimbledon champion in his draw you know! Hewitt has won more Wimbledon's than Berdych, youzeny or any yob in Nadal's draw (excluding Federer).

All this is is a opinion. I don't think any person is saying Nadal is a bad player, far from it. But to say he'll definately win Wimbledon next year when he has never won a grass tournament is pretty silly at the same time. What Borg should have said is Nadal has a pretty good "chance" at winning wimbledon, and guess what most people would agree. He is in a bunch that includes djokovic, nadal, berdych, and i'll throw in gasquet as well as he is a good grass court player. Apart from Federer these guys have a chance at winning Wimbledon. That said in my opinion, it won't happen in 2008!

hewitt is finished and you know that. How many grand slam matches have hewitt won in the past couple of years? yes he is a wimbledon champion, in 2002 but He is a shadow of his former self and even you know that is correct.

I am not saying that what borg said is correct, but thats his educated opinion. However rafas been the 2nd best player on grass court in the last 2 years. FFS for a guy who is called a complete dud on grass courts, reached the finals of wimbledon and he is still not a contender? federer said himself that he is winning wimbledon now before rafa starts winning them all. I am saying that rafa is a major contender alongside Nole.I am not saying that he will win it next year (although i hope he will).Sorry i dont give the rest of them a chance, berdych is very talented but looks like a rios in the making anyway.I dont rate gasquet at all

Hewitt whilst he may be on the decline, is still a Wimbledon champion. All I am saying is Nole's draw was hardly EASY at all. Bjorg has listed a OPINION. He should have used some more "open" words. He could have said "Nadal is a chance to win Wimbledon next year", and guess what I and every single person here would have said fine. He was in the final, he pushed Federer on grass, so of course he is a chance. But to say he'll defiantely win it, is silly to say the least. See what I am saying. When did I ever say Rafa was not a contender. I said he is with a bunch on guys behind Federer who will be trying to get to the Final to try to possibly beat Federer. In that group of contenders you have Nadal, Djokovic, Gasquet 9I am bias as I love his backhand), Berdych, guess you could put Murray in there as well. Now will Federer be beaten next year, for starters it is 8 months away- injuries can happen to anyone at any time, but if everyone is fit, then I still would favour Federer as I beleive Nadal's grass game whilst good, is a work in progress, similar to Federer's clay court game.

So you reckon beating thomas johansson is better than beating someone like Davydenko in US open at the moment? since johansson is a former hardcourt slam champion and davydenko won nothing

why cant be have his own analysis and opinion? according to him nadal will win it and whats wrong with that? do we on bigfooty have the only right to predict and conclude? Some w***er on bigfooty can claim federer will win 25 slams before he retires but no one else can predict anything else? if borg said that federer will win 2008 wimbledon i am sure we wont be saying anything.. and being a legend of the game his opinion carries way more value than any of us on bigfooty im afraid.
