I for one feel the need to sing 'ding dong the witch is dead' from the Wizard of Oz.

He portrayed an air of arrogance, and was disrespectful to members AND non-member FANS, as did Tony Kelly. Year after year of bad financial performance. Questionable decisions and direction included in that bad financial performance.

And as Ginger Greatness said:
I take it that the line item marked "merchandise revenue" on the 2010 P&L is not going to set the world on fire then... In fact, it will be interesting to compare that item with the line items marked "legal fees" and "boffins who designed logo and jumper".

Definitely did not embrace the emotional side of AFL Football - otherwise he would not have dismissed the concerns of members and fans over the jumper issue.

I for one am greatful that a poor off field era is over for the Lions, and that today we start to turn the corner. I still compare the way Port Adelaide addressed their 'branding' change, to the way the Lions did. And thankfully we can now say that the two key players in that in Tony Kelly and Mr Bowers have moved on.

A positive day for the Club. We're heading in the right direction. (or should that be Wright, even if only temporarily)

Nige, I swear I did my above post mentioning that quote, prior to looking at saveourjumper!!

He stole it off me in a MSN conversation.

Flog that he is.

Lions CEO steps down

The Brisbane Lions AFC has announced that Chief Executive Officer Michael Bowers has stepped down from his role and will leave the Club.

Mr Bowers met with the Board yesterday and both parties agreed to an arrangement that would see him depart the role of Club CEO, a position he has held for the past nine seasons.

Lions Chairman Angus Johnson said during discussions with the Board, both Mr Bowers and the Board recognised that it was an appropriate time to hand the baton onto a new CEO.

"Michael has been an asset to this Club over a long period of time and has overseen some of the most successful years in our Club's history," Mr Johnson said.

"The Club acknowledges his wonderful service and we wish him well in whatever path he decides to take in the future."

"Now we are presented with an exciting opportunity to employ a new CEO who will lead the Club into a new era."

Mr Johnson said former Richmond Football Club CEO Steven Wright, who has been running a sports consultancy company in Queensland, had accepted the Board's offer to take on the role as Interim CEO until a permanent replacement is appointed.

Mr Johnson said the Board would undertake a national search to find the best qualified CEO to take on one of the most exciting challenges in Australian sport and lead Brisbane to its next period of sustained success.

"As a Club we have made some major changes in recent times and we are really excited about the future. We are all united behind the vision of returning the Club to a successful position on and off the field," he said.

A qualified lawyer, Bowers was appointed as Lions CEO in 2002 and helped deliver substantial profits during his early years with the Club and has remained committed to sustaining the Lions' long-term viability.

After spending a period of nine seasons at the Lions, Bowers believes now is an appropriate time for him to step aside and allow a new CEO with a fresh approach and ideas to lead the Club into the future.

"The Brisbane Lions have been a huge part of my life over the past decade and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to be part of such a successful organisation," Mr Bowers said.

"While I've been fortunate to enjoy an extended period at the helm, I also recognise that the role of CEO at any football club is one that has a life span."

"It seemed an appropriate time to step aside given the Club is going through a period of considerable change following an extensive review process. It will enable a new CEO to take charge of the Lions and hopefully achieve further success both on and off the field."

"On a personal note, I am looking forward to embarking on a new professional challenge," he said.

Mr Johnson said Mr Wright will undertake the CEO role in the coming months until a permanent replacement is hired.

Wright is no stranger to AFL administration having spent five years as CEO of the Richmond Football Club from 2004-2009. During that time he oversaw a restructuring of the club's operations, developed new elite training and community facilities and generated record profits, membership levels and sponsorship support.

He has also previously held positions as CEO of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation and Senior Associate at Freehills Solicitors.

Wright is currently the Managing Director and Principal Consultant at business consultancy company SBEC Solutions Pty Ltd based on the Gold Coast.

Among his key responsibilities as interim CEO, Wright will oversee the implementation of the Club review, recruit additional resources for the Club's administration, develop strategies to increase the Lions' revenue base and be active in finding a new CEO.

He will officially commence his duties with the Lions from early next week but due to his own business commitments will not be a candidate for the permanent role.

Mr Johnson said that Wright's strategic appointment was essential for the Club to assess suitable full-time candidates and eventually find the best person for the top job.

"The Board has swiftly appointed Steven Wright in the short-term and he will undertake the role until a suitable replacement is found," Mr Johnson said.

"Our members and supporters can rest assured that the Club will embark on an extensive recruitment process to find our next Chief Executive Officer."

Silly as this will sound, I feel like crying, not the sad cry but a huge happy relief cry....I feel like a weight has been lifted off our shoulders, and finally, finally, we are putting things in order for this once great club that we all love, to get right back up there with the best of them..

Bugger the collingwoods, geelongs and hawthorns;), WE were the best, and we will be again!

Forward Ho Vossy and El Capitan, we are right behind you!:D:thumbsu:

Just when I thought my day couldn't get any better... this happens!!! :D

Happy days are here again, boys and girls!!!

While I have entirely struggled to work out what KPIs he has been meeting recently and am certainly not disappointed to see him go, he certainly isn't the Darth Vader character that we often portray him as here. In my conversations with him, he has been quite decent and personable. Others have different experiences.

I got the impression that he actually did care about the club (he turned down a lucrative offer from the Brisbane Roar a year or so ago), but I simply didn't buy into his particular vision. I don't think he ever fully grasped the importance of the emotional side of a football club (extra important in a merged club), and had far too much of an economic rationalist approach.

Thanks for your service anyway Michael. Good luck.

With that out the way, it all means nothing if we don't find a superior replacement. I am extremely excited as to who the replacement could be. The club has barely put a foot wrong in the past couple of weeks, but they can't afford to stuff this appointment up. Get Micky Conlan and Andrew Ireland on the phone!

Very well put Browndog, think he was always going to struggle to survive once the review was announced.

I think we will still be in Paddlepop come 2011, but at least now we have a chance to get it changed in the near future:thumbsu:

Good luck in your future en devours Michael.

now the important part begins. His departure will only be as good as the person we get to replace him.

One has to wonder whether we have the cash to lure someone decent?

Hopefully this puts to bed all the crap about this whole thing only being a Clayton's review!
More like a no-holds barred spring clean!

apart from salary cap issues, I thought we have plenty of cash reserves that could be used to attract the right person.

I couldn't possibly express how I feel any better, with any more eloquence and dignity TBD, well done.

I'm now excited about our future, I have a restored sense of hope and am eagerly anticipating our club being nurtured and restored into a proud football club we can all be proud of.

We need a CEO with a strong AFL history, understanding and passion, and I just hope we get one.

GO LIONS
